Ⅰ.阅读理解

The word “sport” first meant something that people did in their free https://www.doczj.com/doc/547200126.html,ter it often meant hunting wild animals and birds.About a hundred years ago the word was first used for organized games. This is the usual meaning of the word today. People spend a lot of their spare time playing football, basketball, tennis and many other sports.Such people play because they want to. A few people are paid for the sport they play. These people are called professional (职业化的) sportsmen. They may be sportsmen for only a few years, but during that time the best ones can earn a lot of money.

For example, a professional footballer in England earns more than £30,000 a year. The stars can earn a lot more. International golf (高尔夫球) and tennis champions (冠军) can make more than £500,000 in a year. Of course, only a few sportsmen can earn as much money as that.It is only possible in sports for individuals (个人), like golf, tennis and motor racing (赛车). Perhaps the most surprising thing about sportsmen and money is this: the stars can earn more money from advertising (做广告)than from sports. As an advertisement for sports equipment doesn’t simply say “Buy our things.” It says “Buy the same shirt and shoes as ...” Famous sportsmen can even advertise things like watches a nd food. They allow the companies to use their names or a photograph of them and they are paid for this. Sports are no longer just something for people’s spare time.

Ⅲ.读后续写

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。词数50左右。

One day, my brother and I were alone in our apartment, which was on the first floor of the building. The reason was that my parents had both gone for a ball party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Ding-dong! Ding-dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.

Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and he said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.

Without any thinking, my brother said, “No.” He asked if we would like to buy some comic books, which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents’ permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention to enter our house.

Then, I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother’s hands with some rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but I tied it in a special way so my brother could untie himself as we often did. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.

Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but line was dead.

The doors w ere all locked from the outside and w hat’s w orse, I did not ha v e the keys.
