Unit 1

While visiting India, I was invited to dinner in the home of a colonial official. During the meal, a heated argument sprang up among some of guests. The point at issue (argument) was whether a woman could face a crisis with the same self-control as a man. Suddenly I saw the hostess stare straight ahead, her muscles contracting slightly. She silently motioned to a servant and he quickly placed a bowl of milk on the veranda. Since milk was commonly used as bait for snakes, I guessed there must be a cobra in the room. In a commanding tone I told everyone not to move a muscle. Shortly the snake emerged from under the table and made for the bowl of milk. I had thought that I was the one in perfect control, but then the hostess remarked that she had discovered the presence of the cobra when it crawled across her foot!

Unit 2

Jefferson lived more than 200 years ago but many of his ideas are still of value to us today. Here are some of the things he said and wrote.

Go and see. Jefferson believed that books are not the only source of knowledge. Many other sources, such as on-the-spot investigation, are often of greater importance.

You can learn from everyone. Jefferson was born of the highest social class, but he did not only consult people of noble birth but sought advice from people of humble origins.

Judge for yourself. Jefferson held that since heaven has given each of us a mind, we should use it to judge truth and error instead of following the opinions of others blindly.

Do what you believe is right. Jefferson argued that it is conflict not unquestioning agreement that keeps freedom alive. If you believe your idea is right, you must act on it with decision, regardless of resentment or criticism from your opponents.

Trust the future; trust the young. Jefferson believed in change. He did not fear new ideas, nor did he fear the young. He said the earth belonged to the living generation and he looked to the future with courage and hope.

Unit 3

Choosing an Occupation

One of the most important problems a young person faces is deciding what to do. There are some people, of course, who from the time are six years old “know”that they want to be doctors or pilots or fire fighters, but the majority of us do not get around to making a decision about an occupation or career until somebody or something forces us to face the problem.

Choosing an occupation takes time, and there are a lot of things you have to think about as you try to decide what you would like to do. You may find that you will have to take special courses to qualify for a particular kind of work, or you may find out that you will need to get actual work experience to gain enough knowledge to qualify for a particular job.

Fortunately, there are a lot of people you can turn to for advice and help in making your decision. At most schools, there are teachers who are professionally qualified to give you detailed information about job qualifications. And you can talk over your ideas with family members and friends who are always ready to listen and to offer suggestions.

Unit 4

Knowledge and Diploma

It is generally believed that a high diploma guarantees a promising future. Some people identify high diplomas with profound knowledge and exceptional competence. Companies also tend to emphasize the academic achievement of a job candidate. Like it or not, there does exist a social reality –the higher diplomas one gets, the more popular he becomes。

On the contrary, other people claim that a high diploma doesn’t automatically translate into knowledge. A diploma, in their eyes, is only the acknowledgment of one’s educational experience rather than a guarantee of one’s ability. Therefore, we can never measure the depth of one’s knowledge by the grade of one’s diploma. Besides, many knowledgeable people don’t have a high diploma. Take Bill Gates for example. His dropping out of college cannot deny the fact that he is one of the world’s most learned men.

So I must say no one should ever equate a diploma with knowledge, because a diploma is nothing but a proof of a short-term study while genuine knowledge needs one’s lifelong devotion.

Unit 5
