Text 10

Because of the fast pace of American life, many families cannot eat together around the family table evening. Many people have to be at work during the normal dinner hours.

For this reason, fastfood restaurants became very popular. These restaurants serve foods such as hamburgers, tacos and French fries. Fastfood restaurants are really fast. You don't have to wait a minute or two for your food. They are also convenient. You may dress casually, and in some places you can even order from your car and drive away with your food without going into the restaurant. Finally,

fastfood restaurants are inexpensive.

Fast food has its shortcomings, too. Most fastfood meals are not very healthy. They are often high in fats and low in other important nutrients. It is advisable not to eat too much fast food.

For many old persons, just walking across a room can consume them of all their energy for the day. In hot weather, they may not even make them out of bed. Learning to conserve

energy is not a complicated process, yet it can make a world

of difference.

Learning to perform tasks efficiently and to minimize energy expense requires mental organization. Before an elderly

person gets up and does something, she needs to stop and

think about what else she can do at the same time.

For example, getting dressed in the morning could require several trips to the closet. She should stop and think about

all the things she needs to gather from the closet. She

should gather them all at once instead of getting clothes out, putting them on, then going and getting a belt and looking

for shoes. Going in and out of the closet several times requires a lot of activities and energy: gathering all of

the items at one time and dressing in order can take a few simpler steps.

Grooming (梳洗) can be scattered by first brushing her teeth, then getting dressed, then going back to the bathroom and washing her face and combing her hair. They should perform

all tasks in one location and then move on to the next area and tasks. Make sure they take a break and rest between tasks. When cooking, they should gather supplies at one time,

perform the work, and then put away what is no longer needed. They should cook the food, sit down to eat, and then clear up.

There are many other aspects of energy conversation,

including breathing techniques and rest and relaxation tips. Rearranging space such as kitchenchained contents and household furniture can be helpful in making energy conversation work more efficiently.

21.What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Advice on how to conserve energy.

B. Tips on what to do with the elderly.

C. Help to be done for the old people.

D. Daily affairs happening to the elderly.

22.What is the function of the third paragraph?

A. To show how hard an elderly person works.

B. To prove mental organization is effective.

C. To imply elderly persons need timely help.

D. To prove we are into an aged society now.

答案与解析 B 第三段以穿衣为例“She should gather them all at once instead of getting clothes out, putting them on, then going and getting a belt and looking for shoes.”

23.When an elderly person is doing her grooming, she should ________.

A. perform all the tasks in a hurry

B. leave out some of the activities

C. finish all the tasks in one place

D. groom while making a meal

答案与解析 C 根据第四段“They should perform all tasks in one location and then move on to the next area and tasks.”

24.The passage is probably taken from ________.

A. Journal of Environment and Health

B. Family Care and Life Magazine

C. Sports and Environment Magazine

D. Interview and News Report

By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat? A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it's not only how much we eat, but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins and other nutrients that enter our body.

Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But

raw(生的) vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene, the matter found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. “There is an idea that ra w foods are always going to be better,” says Steven K. Clinton, a professor at

Ohio State University. “For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful.”

A number decide how the vegetables do good to people's health before they reach the table, including where and how they were grown and stored before being bought. No single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways.

Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling was better for carrots than frying or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook.

What cooked with the vegetables can also be important? When the vegetables were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them. Putting on some other things that make it taste better—a little salt—can make the food taste better.

25.The writer mainly wants to tell us that ________.

A. people should eat more vegetables

B. the way people eat vegetables is important

C. eating vegetables is good for us

D. how much vegetables one should eat

26.The people who eat the raw vegetables for a long time

will ________.

A. have the eyes problems

B. have heart disease

C. be in need of lycopene

D. hate eating tomatoes

27.The following decide how the vegetables do good to people EXCEPT ________.

A. the place where the vegetables are grown

B. the way how the vegetables are stored

C. the way how the vegetables are prepared

D. the price at which the vegetable are sold

28.From the last paragraph, we can know ________.

A. it's better to cook vegetables with the fat

B. the more fat in the cooking, the fewer vegetables people will eat

C. it's better to cook the vegetables without salt

D. the fat will increase the nutrition of the vegetables

As is well known, the British love to wait in line, but a new research (调查) shows that the British are only about average (平均数) at waiting politely in a queue. The French are the best. It's the Germans who don't have a good habit of

standing in line. They can't stand to wait for anything. They begin to shout loudly and noisily if the line doesn't seem to be moving fast enough. Sadly it never moves fast enough for them.

The experts studied 940 people across Europe. They watched secretly as they waited in line—to get tickets, to order

fast food and to wait for the bus. They found people who are good at forming(排成) queues feel that they move along faster. For example, in Britain, the average waiting in a queue needs about three and a half minutes. In Germany or Sweden people hate waiting in line. In fact, people spend double the time

as the British in queues. They get to the front of the queue without thinking about others, so they waste others' time.

The expert who did the research had asked a person to break into a queue to see what people would do. In Britain, people shouted loudly at him, but when he said,“I'm terribly sorry.

I d idn't realize there was a queue. Do go before me.” People smiled and said, “Oh, that's all right one more won't matter much.” It was also found in France where 80% of the people didn't mind standing in line. Only if they were treated politely. While in Germany everyone was angry and wore an unhappy face. The expert said, “If only they could learn

from the British and the French to think of queuing as an exercise in making the best of an unhappy thing, they might find that the queue then moves faster.”

29.The research shows that the people in ________ are the most polite in standing in line.

A. Sweden

B. Britain

C. France

D. Germany

答案与解析 C 根据第一段的“The French are the best”可知C 项为准确答案。

30.From the last sentence we know the expert wished the Germans could ________.

A. have a good habit of standing in line

B. save others' time while queuing

C. move quickly when queuing

D. take exercise in queues

31.The result of the research shows that ________.

A. people in Europe hate waiting in line

B. standing in line is a kind of exercise

C. there are always queue jumpers all over the world

D. people good at standing in line think they move along

faster

答案与解析 D 由文章第二段第三句“They found people who are good at forming queues feel that they move along faster.”

Mathematics certainly doesn't have to be boring to kids! In fact, there are a wide assortment (种类) of educational math toys that not only make learning easier, but a whole lot of fun. When shopping for toys and activities, think about

things in terms of visual and moving elements. Gears, sorting items, play money and other tools make math real to many children.

Role playing is another easy way to introduce math to young students. A “pretend” shopping trip will not only entertain your kids, but teach them how to make change. Try giving your children a budget and letting them loose in a dollar store, and don't forget to factor in (把…… One of the most satisfying activities for my own kids was a

simple trip to the grocery store. I shopped with list in hand, while they had a pad and paper to tally_up the shopping total.

The child that got the total correct won a piece of candy or other goody at the end of the trip.

The trick to making math fun is to go with what your child is already interested in. If your child loves dinosaurs or soccer, try to find ways to introduce math concepts

associated with that topic.

Maybe they can calculate scoring averages for their favorite teams, or figure out how many pounds of food a TRex would eat over the course of a week. The possibilities are endless!

Lastly, learn to love math yourself. If you hate balancing your checkbook, your kids will pick up on it and learn to hate math as well. So the next time you complaining about tallying up the bill at a restaurant, put on a smile and try to have fun with it.

32.Why does the author suggest buying toys with visual and moving elements for children?

A. This kind of toys is interesting and attracting.

B. They can make math study easier and fun.

C. They are beneficial to children's intelligence.

D. Toys of this kind are cheaper and durable.

答案与解析 B 根据第一段第二句“In fact, there are a wide assortment(种类) of educational math toys that not only make learning easier, but a whole lot of fun.”

33.The author often takes his/her children to the grocery store in order to ________.

A. entertain his/her kids

B. buy food for them

C. introduce mathematics to them

D. make escape of taxation

答案与解析 C 根据第二段第一句“Role playing is another easy way to introduce math to young students”角色扮演是另外一种向

34.What does the underlined phrase “tally up” mean in the second paragraph?

A. To calculate the total cost

B. To write down the list

C. To carry along with

D. To walk around freely

答案与解析 A 根据最后一段中“So the next time you complaining about tallying up the bill at a restaurant,”可知,这是吃饭后的总账单。

选择A项。

35.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? (① means Paragraph 1)

A. ①/②③④

B. ①②/③④

C. ①②③/④

D. ①/②/③/④

The sea has always interested man. From it he can get food, minerals, and treasure. __36__ But he could not go far beneath its surface.

__37__ However, he is not a fish. He must breathe air, so he can't stay under the water's surface for any length of time. To explore deep water, man faces even more dangers and problems.

A diver who wants to stay under water for more than a few minutes must breathe air or a special mixture of gases.

__38__ He can carry a tank of air on his back and breathe through a nose and a mouthpiece. Water weighs 800 times as much as air. Tons of water pushes against a diver deep in the sea. __39__

When a diver is under great pressure, his blood takes in some of the gases he breathes. As he rises to surface, the water pressure becomes less. If the diver rises too quickly, the gases in his blood form bubbles (气泡). The diver is then suffering from the bends The bends can cause a diver to double up in pain. __40__

A. His body is under great pressure.

B. Scientists are trying to find more about the sea.

C. For thousands of years, he could sail on it.

D. They can even kill him.

E. He can wear a diving suit and have air pumped to him from above.

But it’s not so good when the weather’s bad! 4 Business manager: I’m very busy, and I don’t have time to see my husband and children. Mmmm and my life is very stressful, I suppose. I mean, I have to deal with lots of money. But I find it really exciting. 1 A Perfect Day A Couch Potato Forty-three-year-old Brian Blakey from Birmingham is sitting on his sofa and telling me about his perfect day. ~ When I wake up I don't get up immediately. I turn on the television and watch the children's programmes and old movies until about half-past ten. Then I get up, go downstairs and switch on the TV in the living room. For lunch, I have biscuits and a glass of milk, and I watch the news. In the afternoon, I often watch another old film – they're showing some good ones at the moment. In the evenings, I often watch TV series or sport and the news again. I like the main news at six o'clock. At nine thirty, if there is a good play on BBC 2, I switch over and watch it. Then at night, I watch more films and I usually switch off the TV at about two o'clock. I never watch TV all night. I watch TV for sixteen or seventeen hours a day. I also do some exercise every day. I take Tina, the dog, for a walk every afternoon. I don't go far, of course. I walk to the wall outside my house. I always take my portable TV and I sit on the stone wall while the dog walks round in a circle. Of course, I couldn't live this lifestyle without a good wife. She's not here now because she's working, but she always makes my meals. We haven't got much money, you know, but we're happy. Sit down and watch TV. Here's the remote control. You've got the world at your feet. And in your hand. Great! A Workaholic Thirty-six-year-old Bob Black is sitting at his desk and working his way through his paperwork. I normally wake up about five minutes before my alarm clock goes off. As soon as I hear my alarm clock, I jump out of my bed. It takes me less than fifteen minutes to wash, get changed, have breakfast, leave home and get on a bus.
