第三部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

William Shakespeare is the most famous playwright (剧作家). Although he died in 1616, people still go to see his plays. Among the most popular are RomeoandJuliet, AMidsummerNight’sDreamand Hamlet—the story of a prince who struggles to respond to the crimes around him.

Shakespeare, who was born in 1564, was an actor as well as a writer. Most of his ideas for plays were taken from history, people’s conversation, ancient stories, and also from other wr iters. He wrote not only about kings and queens and princes, but also about friends and ordinary people. He wrote about the cruelty of war and the bravery of heroes, as well as about jealousy, joy, hate, ambition and love. His stories live on. The tragedy RomeoandJulietwas reborn as the musical WestSideStoryand more recently as the movie RomeoandJulietwith the wonderful performance of Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.

He invented a number of great characters: powerful magicians, thrilling witches, smart women and both wise and wicked men. He also invented some great phrases. If you’ve ever said, “Oh, for goodness sake!” you can thank Shakespeare for that. Other examples of mon phrases adapted from Shakespeare: “as luck would have it”, “your own flesh and blood”, “too much of a good thing”, “good riddance”, “in one fell swoop”, and “in the twinkling of an eye”. “To be, or not to be: that is the question,” Hamlet says. “Good night, good night. Parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it is morrow,” says Juliet to her Romeo.

Don’t be surprised if you don’t understand everything when reading Shakespeare or watching one of his plays because the meanings of many words have changed over the years. And Shakespeare’s characters speak in poetry, so their speeches can be plicated.

It does help to find out a little bit about the story before reading a Shakespeare play. It’s worth the effort. As Shakespeare wrote, “All the world is a stage.” And in his plays you’ll find that

an entire world is waiting for you.

Do you like drinking some soda when you are having dinner? If your answer is “yes”, you should keep something in mind now. It’s likely that you are increasing the risk of heart disease.

Around the world, 180 billion liters of soda are sold every year, averaging 29 liters per person. Experts say the amount of carbonated (含二氧化碳的) soft drinks we drink is growing. New research from the American Heart Association finds that drinking soda, even diet soda, may greatly increase your risk of heart disease. Dr Vasan led the study. “Drinking just one or more sodas a day may not be as harmless as people think,” said he.

In a large study of 9,000 people, doctors discovered that those who drank one or more sodas a day had a 30% increased risk of being fat, a 25% increase in the risk of abnormal blood sugar levels, and a 32% increase in the chances of having low levels of good cholesterol (胆固醇).

All of these factors increase the risk of heart disease. And there was no difference in the results for those who drank diet soda over regular soda —something that surprised even the researchers.

However, critics of the study say diet soda may not be the cause of increased risk of heart disease. Connie Diekman, president of the American Dietetic Association, said, “It does not say that this will cause that for sure.”

In other words, it could be that unhealthy people like soda. Dr Vasan found those who drink soda generally tend to have greater caloric intake (摄取). They eat more fat. They also eat less fiber and exercise less. Diet soda drinkers may also share this unhealthy lifestyle. Dr Vasan agrees that the link he found between heart disease risk and diet soda needs additional study.

60. From Paragraph 2 we can infer that ______.

A. each person in the world drinks 29 liters of soda per year

B. experts encourage people to drink more diet soda instead of soft drinks

C. experts are worried that more and more people drink soda

B. drinking soda every day is likely to cause health problems

C. many people haven’t realized the importance of health yet

D. diet soda and regular soda will definitely cause heart disease

62. From the study of 9,000 people we can learn that ____.

A. drinking soda increases risk of heart disease

B. experts hadn’t expected to get such a result

C. people drinking regular soda will get fat

D. abnormal blood sugar levels are caused by drinking soda

63. In the opinion of Connie Diekman, ______.

A. the results of the study are not pletely believable

B. there’s no link between heart disease and soda

C. it’s eating habits that causes he art disease rather than drinking regular soda

D. unhealthy people should not drink too much diet soda

Many Western people are not used to sitting on the floor any more. In Japan, however, sitting upright on the floor is mon in different situations. For example, meals are traditionally had when people sit on the tatami (榻榻米) floor around a low table. Also during the tea ceremony and other traditional events, one sits on the floor.

The formal way of sitting for both men and women is kneeling upright. People who are not used to sitting in this style may feel unfortable after a few minutes, and their legs may go numb. However, foreigners are not usually expected to be able to sit in this style for a long time, and an increasing number of Japanese people t hemselves aren’t able to do so, owing to a more westernized lifestyle.

In other situations, men usually sit cross-legged, while women sit on their knees laying both legs to one side. The former sitting style is considered wholly male, while the latter is considered pletely female.

The most important guest sits on the honored seat which is set farthest from the entrance. If there is a tokonoma (壁龛) in the room, the guest should be seated in front of it. The host or the least important person is supposed to sit next to the entrance. Of course, there are other things to be considered in each particular case.

64. Which of the following situations is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. When men and women meet.

B. When a tea ceremony is held.

C. When traditional events are held.

D. When meals are traditionally had.

D. men and women in Japan sit in the same informal way

66. When some guests are in a Japanese home, _______ should sit nearest to the entrance.

A. the host himself

B. both the host and the hostess

C. the host or the least important person

D. the most important guest

B. How foreigners should behave in Japanese homes.

C. Where to sit in Japanese homes.

D. How and where to sit in Japanese homes.

A new study shows significant increases in foreign language study in the United States since 2002, with Arabic leading the increase.

The survey finds that the study of Arabic has increased by 127%, and the number of schools offering Arabic study has doubled since the last nationwide survey in 2002.

Spanish continues to be the most studied language at American higher education institutions, but interest in Asian languages is growing with Chinese up over 50%.

The Modern Language Association, tracking language enrollment for half a century, says the number of enrollments is now at a historic high, and the increase reflects a growing recognition on the part of students and government that languages play a role in an ever smaller world.

“First of all, we think that they know that they are going to be better prepared in their careers and in their lives as citizens. And we also know that there is a lot more support for language study today, support in the form of federal dollars, sup port also in the form of technology,” executive director Rosemary Feal said.

The study finds that students continue to study traditionally-taught languages such as Spanish, French and Italian and that interest in classical languages such as Greek and Latin remains strong.

Karin Ryding, a professor of Arabic, says she is pleased that the survey found growth in both introductory and advanced level courses in foreign language. She says practicality is one of the motivations.

“I don’t think this is just a temporary spike in enrollments. I think these figures indicate a real shift of interest on the part of American students. Young people today understand that the world is now truly and inevitably (必然地) smaller. They are ing to the study of Arabic and other languages with serious professional goals in mind. This may include work with international organizations, the diplomatic service, global environmental efforts, humanitarian relief efforts, securi ty studies, international munications and media studies,” she said.

68. What can we know about Arabic according to the passage?

A. Most students in the US study Arabic.

B. The study of Arabic has doubled since 2002.

C. The number of schools teaching Arabic has increased 127%.

D. The study of Arabic has increased the most of all languages.

69. Which of the following languages is NOT traditionally-taught in the US?

A. Spanish.

B. French.

C. Chinese.

D. Italian.

70. Professor Karin Ryding thinks that _________.

A. there is growth in all level courses of foreign language study

B. young people learn foreign languages to be better prepared for their careers and lives

C. the US government offers financial support to foreign language study

D. more support is needed in the form of technology

71. The underlined word “spike” in the last paragraph most probably means “________”.

A. shift

B. survey

C. motivation

D. increase

72. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Foreign language study in the US at the highest level for half a century.

B. A growing recognition that languages play a role in an ever smaller world.

C. A lot more support shown for language study today.

D. A real shift of interest on foreign language study.

Shoplifting (冒充顾客在商店行窃) is taking place in stores or supermarkets throughout the world. However, shoplifting happens more in British stores, according to a recent research by the UK-based Center for Retail Research.

Napoleon once considered Britain as a “nation of shopkeepers”, to which so many people dreamed of traveling. Now it seems it is a nation of shoplifters. According to the research, Britain is the most light-fingered (惯偷的) country in Europe, with nearly one in every two cases of shoplifting across the continent taking place in British stores. The report said there were nearly 566,000 reported cases of shoplifting in Britain during 2001 out of a Europe-wide total of 1.27 million. The next worst countries in Europe, France and Germany, came well below Britain with only 188,000 and 167,000 cases respectively. Switzerland lived up to its clean-living reputation, with just 10,198 recorded cases of shop theft, and it is the lowest in Europe.

“The only reason I can think of is the higher level of criminality in Britain,” report author Joshua Bamfield said. But the blame for Britain’s poor showing does not lie wholly at the doorstep of Britons, Bamfield said, but also with some organized foreign gangs traveling in cities such as London. “There are traveling gangs of thieves, many from places like Poland and Russia, which target large department stores,” Bamfield said. “The problem is right across Europe —the criminals have f ormed their own European Union.”

Bamfield said one likely factor causing some mistakes on the statistics is that retailers in Britain are more likely to record thefts pared to other nations, such as Greece. “It’s a social phenomenon that could happen i n any country,” said Bamfield. “The most important thing is how to prevent it rather than accusing of it too much.”

73. By calling Britain a “nation of shopkeepers”, Napoleon probably meant that _______.

A. Britain was a nation of shoplifters in spite of its high level of development

B. Britain should have cared more about its agriculture

C. Britain’s economy was experiencing a breakthrough

D. Britain should take measures to reduce its number of shops

74. According to the passage, in which country are shopkeepers likely to feel safer?

A. Britain.

B. Germany.

C. France.

D. Switzerland.

75. From what Joshua Bamfield said in Paragraph 3, we can infer that _______.

A. it’s the high level of criminality that explains Britain’s shop lifting problem

B. Britain’s social problem of shop theft is caused by a variety of factors

C. Britain’s poor showing does not lie wholly at the doorstep of Britain

D. traveling gangs of thieves make up the majority of Britain’s shoplifters

Many American presidents have been pet lovers. They kept their pets in the White House.

In 1806, President Thomas Jefferson began to live in the White House. Passers-by often caught sight of his pet bears. Explorers had discovered these bears, caught a pair of small ones, and sent them to Jefferson.

In 1825, the White House was home to President John Quincy Adams and his crocodile. The green beast actually belonged to General Lafayette, a French hero who had helped the United States win the Revolutionary War. When Lafayette asked Adams to keep the crocodile for him, the

President could n’t refuse.

When President Martin Van Buren moved into the White House in 1837, he brought his tigers with him. In the end, Congress sent someone to seize the tigers and put them in a zoo because many people thought the tigers should belong to American people.

Twenty years later, President James Buchanan received a valuable gift in his first year in the White House. The King of Siam sent several elephants! Buchanan had no desire to share his building with the big creatures, so he sent them to the zoo. Buchanan did, however, keep another gift — a pair of birds. They were a fitting symbol of presidential power.
