五、句型透视

1.Though it didn’t look like a table when it was finished, I still liked it very much.尽管完工之后它看上去并不像一张桌子,但我还是很喜欢它。

句型公式

though/although (引导让步状语从句)+(yet/still)主句

【句式分析】

though和although引导的状语从句都表示让步关系,均不能与but连用,但可以与副词yet或still连用。一般情况下though和although可以互换使用,只是although比though更正式。如:

Although/Though it was snowing, it was not very cold.

I’d quite like to go out, though/although it is a little late.

Though/Although Australia is very large, yet its population is small.

【注意事项】

(1)用though时,可将强调的词前置构成部分倒装,但although 不能。as也有此种倒装结构。如:Poor though/as he is, he is happy.

(2)though 除作连词外,还可用作副词,常置于句末,句子较长时,也置于句中。如:There’s no excuse, though, for hurting her feelings.

(3)although引导从句常指事实,而though引导的句子可表假设。

【句式分析】

当句子为一般现在时和一般过去时的情况时,我们可以在谓语动词前加助动词do/does/did 来对谓语进行强调,加强说话语气。注意添加助动词后谓语动词一定要改为原形。如:

【句式分析】

该结构中的谓语动词必须是瞬间性动词,若为延续性动词(如:wait, work, live等)只能用肯定式。until既能作连词引导状语从句也可以作介词引导状语,同时还必须注意until与介词、连词before/after等的区别。如:

It won’t be long before he comes back.

I didn’t know his name until/before he told me.

I didn’t get your letter until yesterday.

→It wasn’t until yesterday that I got your letter.

→Not until yesterday did I get your letter.

【句式分析】

“Upon/On +动名词短语或名词短语”表示“一……就……”,可与as soon as互换。【相关拓展】

表示“一……就……”的表达法还有:

(1)从属连词:as soon as/once(as soon as强调时间的紧接,而once带有条件的意味。)

(2)名词:the moment/instant/minute/second。

sight,scene, scenery, view都有“景象”的含义。

3)view常指从远处或高处看到的scenery的一部分,也指从某一位置所看到的景色。

4)sight既可以指场景、眼前看到的景观,又可以指名胜、风景,只是在表示后者的含义时,必须要用复数形式。

The gravity of the situation shocked Bob Geldof, an Irish musician, so he organized a charity concert called Live Aid to raise money for the victims of hunger in Ethiopia. The concert took place on 13 July 1985 in two places—London and Philadelphia—and included the biggest stars of the time. Geldof intended the concert to raise money for hunger relief and to make the public more aware of the problem. In the end, $100 million was raised, which was used to buy food and to provide help with development projects in Ethiopia. The concert also made the headlines around the world, and put great pressure on politicians and statesmen to do something about the problem of world hunger. Live Aid was in 1985, but for many people in the developing world, disease and poverty are still a serious problem. According to the United Nations, ten million people die every year of starvation or problems related to having a poor diet. In fact, hunger is the world‘s number one health risk, killing more people than any disease. In wrestling with the dilemma of worldwide hunger, the United Nations set up an agency called the World Food Programme(WFP) in 1963. The WFP has organized a number of programmes, including the Food-for-Life programme, which sends emergency food aid to countries during times of trouble; the Food-for-Growth programme, which targets people most at risk, such as babies, pregnant women and old people; and the Food-for-Work programme, which helps people without jobs support themselves by giving them work and paying them in food aid. Through programmes like these, the WFP has helped more than one billion people since it was set up. This is beyond doubt an amazing achievement, but is it enough? Today, some developing countries in Africa, Asia and South America stand at a crossroads. While they are seeing great development, they are still poorer than many countries in other parts of the world, and there is a danger that they could fall further behind developed countries. They need help, but the sad truth is that merely sending loaves of bread is not enough. It is only a short-term solution to a long-term problem. There is a saying that goes, ?Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for t he rest of his life.‘ In order to find a permanent solution to this long-term problem, countries need to develop so that they can either grow the food they need, or have enough money to buy this food on the world market.
