Louis Pasteur was a world-famous French chemist and biologist.

He is particularly famous for his work on rabies vaccine (狂犬病疫苗). The rabies virus enters the body through the bite of an infected animal or through infected saliva (唾液) entering an existing wound. After experimenting with the saliva of animals suffering from the disease, Pasteur concluded that the disease rests in the central nervous system of the body. By studying the tissues of infected animals — rabbits, Pasteur was able to produce a form of the virus. This could be used for inoculation (接种).

On July 6, 1885, Pasteur tested his pioneering rabies vaccine on a man for the first time. He saved the life of a young man called Joseph Meister who had been bitten by

a rabid dog. Pasteur was urged to treat him with his new method. The treatment lasted

10 days and at the end he recovered and remained healthy. Since then thousands have been saved by this treatment.

On March 1886, Pasteur was invited to present his results to the Academy of Sciences and in 1888 went on to found the Pasteur Institute in Paris. This was a pioneering

clinic for the study of infectious diseases, the treatment of rabies and a centre for teaching. Pasteur directed the institute personally until he died. The Pasteur Institute is still one of the most important centers in the world.

Pasteur became a national hero and was honored in many ways. He died at Saint-Cloud on September 28, 1895 and was given a state funeral at the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Modifications (修改) of the Pasteur method are still used in rabies treatment today.

A newer vaccine which contains virus prepared from human cells grown in the laboratory is safer and requires a shorter course of injections.

National parks in the UK are a wonder to see, run by the National Trust, a non-profit charity which protects Britain's historic and natural landscapes. Britain's park Authority has made great efforts to protect these wild areas from over habitation and commercial activities.

Mainland England and Wales have the largest number of protected parks. The first established area was the l,438 kilometer Peak District. The earliest national park lies in central northern England. Due to its vast natural beauty, the Peak District is thought to be the world's most visited national park after Japan's Mount Fuji. In the northwest area of Wales lies Snowdonia National Park. This attractive, mysterious ancient landscape is home to steep mountains. Walking trails to Mount Snowdon are just one of several exciting activities for hikers.

National parks in the UK can also boast of having Britain's largest protected wetland "The Broad", just outside the village of Homing. An ideal spot for families, this 200-mile area combines waterways with an interesting intersection(交叉) of windmills, castles and an ancient Normal church.

Spreading across 885 miles of truly impressive rocky land is Lake District National Park. England's largest park attraction is spread between Edinburgh to the north and Manchester to the south. Although the land itself seems wild, almost 40,000 people live within the park. Within this district's vast borders we can find over 6,000 archaeological(考古的) sites and monuments dating back to prehistory.

We finally arrived at the Elephant Orphanage to take care of the elephants. We worked out a new routine and would work from Monday to Friday and then we all set off for our weekend tour wherever our travel guide inspired us. These adventures started with the beaches.

All the locals were very friendly, from the beach sellers to the guest house owners. The bus journeys there were always interesting. We would choose to travel the cheapest way, which meant the “local” way. The perception (观念) of personal space in Sri Lanka is different to home. A bus is not full until it is truly impossible for yet another person to hang out of its doors.

Our other trips included the cities of Kandy and Colombo, mountains, temples and caves, etc. The choices were endless. Most of the other volunteers had also come alone and everyone had the same like-minded attitude — to experience and absorb everything! We got on very well, I never felt lonely and in fact some lifelong friends were made here.

I was due to leave Sri Lanka on Valentine’s Day. My next destination was Thailand. Life in Sri Lanka was good and as the end drew closer I felt an extreme range of emotions.

Sadness at having to say goodbye mixed with a comforting certainty that I would be returning here one day. I also felt excited about the next part of my journey. I was also proud. Personally I had accomplished so much in my short time here. I was no longer scared of the unknown, but quite addicted to it! My confidence had grown as I had my self-reliance (自力更生), patience and mercy.

The rest of my trip throughout Asia and Indonesia brought many new experiences, extreme highs and lows, but Sri Lanka as my first country will always hold a special place in my memory.

One year and many adventures later, I returned home to London, Heathrow. My mum was waiting there with a big hug (拥抱) at the place I had left her before. I had grown up in this period of time and I felt ready to take on the biggest challenge of them all — my future!

After some weeks, I contacted Travelers Worldwide, the organization who had helped me so much at the very beginning, for a position in their company. And I was lucky enough to get the job.

Then I learnt that Travelers only employs ex-volunteers and that my experience gained through traveling was in fact a must to the job. I moved down to Brighton, to live again by the sea. I am now the person responsible for coordinating (协调) the projects in Sri Lanka and I organize new volunteers each day. I had my first trip back to Sri Lanka, as the UK coordinator, just before Christmas and it was as attractive as I remembered.

The achievements of a “gap year” away cannot be measured. The first hand experience of seeing the world offers the opportunity to test your limits. You come back stronger for it, with a bank of special memories and life-long friends. It is something everyone should experience. It will change your perceptions, and it might even change your life. It certainly changed mine.
