One of the main challenges facing many coutries is how to maintain their identity in the face of globalization and the growing multi-language trend. “One of the main reasons for economic failure in many African countries is the fact that, with a few important exceptions,mother-tongue

education is not practiced in any of the independent African states." said Neville Alexander.Dutctor of the Project for the Study of Aitemative Education in South Africa at the University of Cape Town.

In response to the spread of English and the increased multi-language trends arising from Immigration . many countries have inuoduced language laws in the laws in the last decade .In some ,the use of languages other than the national language is banned in public spaccs such as advertsing posters. One of the first such legal proviaions was the 1994 " Toubon law' in France. but the idea hs been copied in many counuics since then. Such efrorts to govern language use are often

dismisscd as futile by language experts . who are well aware of the difficulty of controlling

fashions in specch and know from research that language switching among bilinguals is a natural process.

It is especiaLly difficult for native speakers of English to understand the desire to maintain the 'purity" of a language by law. Since the time of Shakespeare . English has continually absorbed

foreign words into its own language. EngLish is one of the most mixed and rapidly changing languages in the world. But the has not been a barrier to acquiring prestige and power. Another reason for the failure of many native English speakers to understand the role of state regulation is that it bas never been the Aryllo-Saxon way of doing things. English has never had a

state-controlled

autharity for the language, similar, for example . to the Academie Francaise in France.

The need to prorect national languages is . for most western Europeans. a recent phenomenon- especially the need to ensure that English does not unnecessarily take over too many fields. Public communication, educauon and new modcs of communication promoted by technology, may be key fields to defend.

46. Neville Alexander believes that .

A. mother-tongue education is not practiced in all African countries

B. lack of mother-tongue education can lead to economic failure

C. globalization has led to the rise of multi-language trends

D. globalization has resulted in the econonuc failure of Africa

47 . The underlined word " futile" (in paragraph 2) most probably means " " A.

useless B. pracucal C. workable D. unnccessary

48. Why do many English-speaking; cuuntries not support the language protection efforts described in the passage?

A. They think language protection laws are ineffective.

B. They want their language to spread to other countries.

C. They have a long history of taking words from other languages.

D. It reduces a language's ability tO acquire intenatiunal importance.

49.what can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. English has taken over fields like public communication and education.

B. Europeans have long realizcd the need to protect their national Languages.

C. Most language experts believe it is important to promote a national language.

D. Many aspects of national culture are threatened by the spread of English.

Dear sir,

I’m writing to complain about a pair of sneakers I recently purchased from your website. What I ordered was a pair of black size-nine shoes but I received a pair of white , size-8.5 shoes instead. Worse still, there was a ten-day delay in delivering my shoes, which should have been received on April 10. For the above reasons , I demand either a new pair of black size-nine shoes be posted to me immediately or I be given a full refund. Also , if I send back the wrong shoes, will your company pay for the postage?

Thank you for your consideration.

The passage describes four races between the hare and the tortoise and analyses the moral learned from each race. In the last race , they could achieve greater success and satisfaction through cooperation.

I think the story can teach us that when we work together we can achieve more than when we compete. It is a win-win effect. The story reminds me of my experience when I first came to this school. My classmate, Michael showed great talent in science studies while I was pretty good at history and economics. I feared that Michael would outperform me in the exams so I avoided helping him and viewed him as my competitor. It was not until Michael suggested that we work together that I understood the importance and benefit of copperation. We shared learning methods and helped each other. As a result, we both made progress in our studies and became top-ten students. As far as I am concerned, it’s good to be individually brilliant, but working as a team will always beat individual performance / brilliance.

[例1]I can send a message to Kenya whenever I want to, and ___38___ gets there almost in a second. [例2]It is said that a short-tempered man in the Song Dynasty was very anxious to help ___33___rice crop grow up quickly. [例3]…the head of the village was tying up his horse to my car to pull it to ___35___ small town some 20 kilometers away where there was a garage. [例4]…who should have the honour of receiving me ___33___ a guest in their house. [例5]…two world-famous artists, Pablo Picasso ___34Candido Portinari, which are worth millions of dollars. [例6]…all I saw was this beautiful girl, whose smile just melted me ___36___almost instantly gave me a completely new sense of what life is all about. [例7] I wanted to see as much of the city as possible in the two days ___32___I was to return to Guangzhou. [例8] He was very tired after doing this for a whole day, ___37___he felt very happy…(2008年广东高考) 技巧6:若结构较完整,空格后的谓语动词是原形,特别是与上下文时态不一致或主谓不一致时,很可能是填情态动词或表示强调或倒装的助动词(do, does, did等)。 [例9]What is acceptable in one country ___31___be considered extremely rude in another. [例10] He had no time or energy to play with his children or talk with his wife, but he ______ bring home a regular salary. (1)由it is…that… 如: [例11] …and ___40was only after I heard she became sick that I learned she couldn’t eat MSG (味精)! (2)由倒装句式判断,是填构成倒装的条件的only, so, neither, nor, never, hardly, seldom, not, until, had等,还是填do, does, did等。如: [例12] ______with hard work can you expect to get pay rise. 如: [例13] …as ___32___took them just three minutes to steal paintings by two world-famous artists…[例14]Dating sites also make ___36___easy to avoid someone whom you are not interested in. (4)so /such…that…句型。如: [例15] This made the goat so jealous ___34___it began plotting against (谋划对付) the donkey. (5)more…than…(与其说…… 如: [例16]Cynthia’s story shows vividly that people remember more how much a manager cares ___40___ how much he pays. [例17]His fear of failure ___36___ (keep) him from classroom games that other children played with joyous abandon. [例18] That was definitely not an attractive idea so I politely declined her Invitation, ___40___ (close) my book and walked away. [例19] In Logan, three people ___38___ (take)to a hospital, while others were treated at a local clinic.

WENQIANG A We can all think of times when people didn't make remembering easy. Directions given at machine-gun speed. New people introduced in a flood of names and handshakes. Whenever information is passed between people, it’s all too easy for it to go in one ear and straight out of the other. Thankfully, the opposite is also true. Look around you, and you’ll see parents who can get their children to rem ember exactly what they were told; advertisers who know how to imprint their sales messages on our brains. So, how do they do? Their secrets can be summed up in four simple words: focus, imagery, reasons and engagement. FOCUS means ensuring that the person you’re talking to can concentrate on learning. Choose your moment carefully. Check that they can properly hear or see the information. Communicate slowly and clearly enough for their memory to cope. IMAGERY helps information to stick. Do everything your can to make other people “see”the ideas you’re giving them. Add visual details to directions, and illustrate abstract concepts with metaphors. REASONS to remember help people to put in the mental effort. So, make it clear that your words are important, and be explicit about why. Maybe this information will save them time, protectthem from embarrassment, or let them enjoy a particular experience or event. EMGAGEMENT requires you to ask questions. Point out links between new concepts and things listeners already know. Activate their senses, spark their curiosity, get them doing something physical, or simply make them laugh. The next time you’ve got an important message to pass on, put some of these techniques to the test. You’ll discover that there are benefits on both sides when you know how to FIRE people’s memories into action. 21. What is the main purpose of the text? A.To report new research. B.To provide some advice. C.To explain a problem. D.To define some terms. 22. How can you do to help a listener “focus” on w hat you are saying? A.Select the appropriate time to raise the topic. B.Do something humorous to get their attention. C.Make sure the information provided is correct.
