Task 1

What should parents do to help their children to succeed in school?

Task 2

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:all students should attend social activities such as join a club or a sports team in school.

Task3

The university proposes a car rental program on campus, which can offer students a discounted price. The woman likes the policy very much. First, the campus is far from the downtown area. Although there is bus route, it usually takes more than 2 hours. And if the students want to go to many stores, it's very inconvenient. So discounted renting price will be very useful. Second, she had done math before, it is not reasonable for students like her to own a car. Because besides the car's price, she will need to pay for fuels and campus permits.

Task 4

Buffering refer to the strategy some weaker animals would use to approach food resource in front of the stronger members of the group. They would use infants to buffer. The lecturer shares an example of monkeys in Japan. The stronger males usually have the best food and will be angry if the

weaker males get close. So the weaker males borrow the baby monkeys from their mother. Interestingly, the stronger males are not angry when the babies and the weaker monkeys get close and even share food with them.

Task 5

Ann has promised her sister to babysit her kids tonight, however, she suddenly remember that she got a history paper due for tomorrow's class. There are two possible solutions:first, she has talked with her sister about the problem and her sister said she can cancel the babysitting schedule, they can go to the concert another day. However, the tickets cannot be switched or refunded. Second, she can bring books and computer to her sister's house and do the paper there, but the environment will definitely be distracting.

Task 6

The design of tall buildings has changed over time according to the different materials that people can approach in different periods. In the past, to design tall buildings, people need to build thick walls to support the enormous weight upside. The speaker talks about the stone tower for example. Because of the thick stone wall at the base, the tower doesn't have enough space inside. Nowadays, people can use steel to build thin walls, which can also support heavy weight. The example mentioned is the office building with

thin steel walls.

Task 1: what can the parents do to help their children succeed in school?

Sample Response:

Personally, I think parents should firstly teach their children to be well-mannered. I mean, a child should learn to be polite to others and respect for others in the first place. There is a saying that, politeness costs nothing and gains everything. An agreeable person is always able to leave a

good impression on others and get more favorable chances. Additionally, steering their children into their real

interests is also very crucial in today’s society. One is more likely to succeed in the area that he is interested in. So it is the parents’ responsibility to provide more opportunities for their children to explore their interests, like encouraging them to attend more extracurricular

activities or take part in the summer camp during their vacations.

Task 2: Is it important for students to attend social activities, such as joining clubs?

Sample Response:

From my point of view, attending social activities is definitely a very important part for students. First of all, students should develop their skills from all aspects apart from the academic knowledge. Nowadays, every school provides students with a variety of clubs to choose from. By joining

the clubs, students are able to develop their abilities, like interpersonal skills, communicative skills and team work spirit, which cannot be obtained from traditional classroom.

Also, students need to attend different activities to explore their interests. You know, it is always good to have

something you like. One is more likely to succeed in the area that he is interested in.

Task3

1. The campus is far away from town, and the bus only

runs in every two hours. If the students want to go to more places, they have to take a long time. So renting a car is more convenient for them.

2. Purchasing a car for herself will cost a lot of money, including the gas fee, repairs, parking fee and so on. So renting a car is better.

Task4

解析:

讲buffering。Weaker one takes infant to interact with stronger one to avoid provoking aggression。

Task6

解析:

讲座主题是architecture changes over time.

所谓真实性,其一,它的语速与本族语说话人(English native speaker)的语速相仿;其二,听力材料中很自然地含有fillers:sort of, uh, um, so, well, etc.;和口语体:we’re gonna talk about ...; An’ I’m gonna get into…;以及说话人下意识的、或是为了强调而有意识的“重复(repetition)”;等等。 SAMPLE QUESTIONS:

Include details and examples in your explanation. sample answer: 091031NA Speaking Question 2 Some people prefer to live in a place most of their life. Other people prefer to move to different places. Which do you prefer and why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your response. sample answer: I prefer to move around a lot instead of settling in one place because first of all I believe most people’s growth comes with the changes in their lives. For example, after finishing my junior high school in China, I decided to go to Canada. This gives me an opportunity to be instructed in an entirely different manner. I’ve become a more independent thinker and learned how to look at things from different perspectives. If I were still studying in China, I quite doubt I would learn all this. Secondly, I think that by moving around, people are able to experience diverse circumstances which give them new experiences and broaden their views, and thus they can get more comprehensive understanding of the world, the society and life itself. What charactereristics do you think a good teacher should have?(06. 3.3; 07. 11.3考题)

Sample answer: In my view, a good teacher should have different characteristics. First, a good teacher should be faithful and dedicated to the job. If a teacher is faithful to the job, then s/he never cheats and will be impartial(偏向)and students will respect such a teacher. If a teacher is dedicated towards his/her work, then s/he will teach with his/her heart. Another most important characteristic of a good teacher is patience. Teachers should never lose their patience in class when students ask questions repeatedly. A teacher should explain each and every aspect of the topic in the easiest way. Most of all, a good teacher should update his/her knowledge ‘cause further learning can make a good teacher re-discover the beauty of the teaching profession. 2. What are important characteristics you look for in friends?(06. 5.12; 06. 6.24; 07.1.27考题) Sample answer: I think what makes a good friend is someone who is honest, supportive, and has a good sense of humor. I just look for someone who's honest to me no matter what. He should not tell stories behind my back; he should tell me my short-comings at my mouth, but never praises me in front of me. It is a well known saying that "A FRIEND IN NEED IS A FRIEND INDEED." Therefore, a friend should stand by you in the hour of any sort of need. I just think that a good friend won't leave me if I'm in trouble. They can be my friends in sunshine and in shade, care for me even when the times are bad and even more when the times are great. Also, I'd love to spend more time with someone who can make me laugh and is fun to be around. 3. Describe a person that influenced you most.(06. 5.26; 06. 3. 17;06.10.22考题;与06.5.26类似) Sample answer: The person that really influenced me most was Ms. Xing---my college teacher who taught us English literature. Her class was quite different from the other teachers. In her class we were not expected to sit there and listen. We had to get more involved in the class activities, like discussions, comments or debates sometimes. Our creativity and imagination were developed enormously through the active participation. On the other hand, she let us think more about life by sharing her experiences and more importantly, she taught me how to live on my own. So that's why I was greatly influenced. Not only did she give me knowledge, but also she gave me courage and confidence as well.

T1: which of the following three behaviors would you consider the most negative for kids? Being selfish, saying impolite things or speaking loudly in the public? I would say that speaking loudly might have the most negative impact on kids, as it could be pretty annoying and disturbing to others, and without being aware of this, the kids might have the bad habit of ignoring others’feeling in the long term. Imagine that you are watching a movie in a cinema or listening to a concert in a hall, a naughty boy is talking loudly over the phone or chatting with his friends all the way without caring about others, it could be a real nightmare. And this has happened a lot to me, for example last time when I went to see The Dallas Buyers Club, a bunch of kids were talking so loudly from the very beginning of the movie that I could barely catch a word from Ron Woodroof, and all the other viewers got so annoyed and disappointed for that. T2: Do you agree or disagree that to succeed we need to make enemies? Well I disagree with the opinion, coz it’s true that most of the time we do face a lot of competitors and rivals in order to succeed, but it doesn’t mean that we have to make enemies. Let’s take a look at LA Lakers, when Kobe Bryant joined Lakers as a Shooting Guard in 1996, he was facing a lot of equally strong competitors like Allen Iverson and Ray Allen, but at that time Shaquille O’Neal was already the second-to-none Center in the whole association. At the beginning, Shaquille and Kobe

If the following two things overlap with each other, which would you prefer: dinner together with your family or attend your friends’party on the weekend? Personally, I would say I will definitely go to a family dinner. First off, having dinner with families can help me to connect more with my families. Parents are the very first teachers in our psychological development, and they, together with other family members shape our early behaviors, values and even habits. So, I should keep families company. Additionally, as an adult, I am so overwhelmed with my schoolwork, like, assignments, presentations, and group projects. Seldom do I have time to interact with my families, thus I will never let go any chance to get more connected with families since they are such a big part of our lives. Sample answer I would prefer to go back home to spend time with my family in a dinner party.

Task2. About education 1.Some students prefer to have classes in the morning and do their part-time jobs in the evening. Others prefer to have classes in the evening and do their part-time job in the morning. Which do you prefer and why ?Use specific reasons and examples to support your response . As far as I am concerned, I prefer to have classes in the morning and do my part-time job in the evening. First of all, as a student, attending courses is of the first importance. Thus I should give priority to class rather than part-time job. If I do my part-time job in the morning, I will probably feel exhausted in the evening and pay no attention to my teacher in classes. I mean, studying in the morning is much more efficient than in the evening. So, I will choose to attend classes in the daytime. 2.Some students prefer to review their notes regularly; while others prefer to review their notes just before the test. Which do you prefer and explain why? As far as I am concerned, I prefer to review my notes regularly rather than just before the test. First of all, if the test is around the corner, having reviewed my notes regularly will not only diminish the time I spend on preparation for the test, but also probably get me a higher grade than those who review their notes just before the test. In addition, getting a good score is not the primary purpose of learning. Studying is for increasing one’s knowledge. And only through reviewing the note regularly, will a student achieve steady progress in study. 3.Some university students would prefer to study full-time; others would prefer to study part-time. Which do you prefer and why? As far as I am concerned, I prefer to study part-time rather than full-time. First of all, studying full-time is too stressful for me. Studying part-time will provide me with more time to review the lesson, and thus I will have a deep understanding of the knowledge. And, studying part-time can also provide me enough time to put my knowledge into practice. For example, my major is marketing, which is subject of the character of practice. And it is important for me to get a relevant job in the spare time. So, I prefer to study part time. 4.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Students should always study in quiet places .Use specific reasons and examples to support your position. As far as I am concerned, students do not always need to study in quiet places. First of all, although it's common sense that quiet place is ideal for students, sometimes noise can not be avoided. For instance, there may be some people getting in and out of the study room in order to answer the phone or go to the toilet. Therefore it is very essential for students to bear some noises. And also, it is not the environment, but the mind that plays important role in learning efficiency. Mao Zedong, one of the greatest leaders of our country in history, used to read in the Tiananmen Square intently. And Mao was so concentrated on his book that he didn’t affect by the noisy environment.
