A

Neil Jorda n, a con servati on biologist, has come up with a novel method for protecti ng cattle from Africa n lions: paint eyes on their beh in ds. The lio ns will think their inten ded prey has see n them and will give up, since they lost the eleme nt of surprise.

This psychological trickery has been called “ iCow ” , which is actually not as strange as it skikeids. The eye

patter ns on butterfly wings are known to preve nt preying birds and woodcutters in In dia n forests wear masks on the backs of their heads whe n work ing to discourage hungry tigers.

The inspiration for the iCow strategy came while Jordan was based in a village in Botswana, when two

lion esses were killed by local farme rs to revenge their cattle ' s death. The Africa n lion is a vuln erable species, with numbers droppi ng from over 100,000 in the 1990s to about 30,000 today. Much of that decli ne is due to these kinds of reven geful killi ngs because farmers have no effective strategies for protect ing their herds.

“ Lions are hunters that like to attack by surprise. They move slowly, quietly and carefully to their prey, get close and jump on them un see n, ” he said. When Jorda n was watch ing a lio n follow an an telope one day, ho e choti

the lion gave up the hunt once the an telope spotted it.

So he joined one of the local farmers on a 10-week trial study, pain ti ng eyes on on e-third of a herd of 62 cattle.

Whe n the cattle retur ned each ni ght, they took a head count to see how many had survived. Only three cows were

killed by lions duri ng this period-all without the pain ted eyes on their beh in ds. And all the pain ted cows survived.

However, Jordan warned that so far this is just a promising idea. He is now back in Botswana for a more ambitious study, armed with GPS devices to better mon itor the moveme nt of predators and prey. 21. The iCow strategy is designed to ______ A. kill the lions C. ide ntify the cattle

22. When hun ti ng, lio ns like to ____ . A. give up halfway

C. chase their prey steadily

23. What can be in ferred from the passage? A. The iCow strategy is likely to bring great ben efit. B. In the 10-week trial study more cattle were killed. C. The farmers will take their revenge on more lions. D. Neil got i nspirati on from patter ns on butterfly wings.

"fiti n ” or “ go along ” wita.thiEspeDple around y cases, this social in flue nce might in volve agree ing with or acting like the majority of people in a specific group, or involve behaving in a particular way to be viewed as

happens regularly in our social world. Sometimes we ' reaware of our behaviour, but in many cases it happens without much thought or aware ness on our parts. And even in some cases we go along with thi ngs we disagree with or behave in ways we know we shouldn

There are coun tless examples of con formity in life. For in sta nce, a tee nager dresses in a certa in style because he wants to fit i n with the rest of the tee nagers in his social group. A woma n reads a book for her book club and really enjoys it. When she atte nds her book club meeti ng, the other members all dislike the book. Rather tha n go aga inst the group opinion, she simply agrees with the others that the book is terrible.

Why do we conform? In many cases, looking to the rest of the group for clues for how we should behave can actually be helpful. Others might have greater knowledge or experience than we do, so following their lead can actually be instructive. And in some cases, we conform to the expectations of the group to avoid looking foolish. This tendency ca n become especially strong in situati ons where we aren

are some situati ons where we conform just in order to avoid puni shme nts or gain rewards.
