it's not unusual for the cold British weather to make us feel a little miserable, but it could also making us ill,say scientists. more rain and bigger storms cold be the main of more stomach illness in Europe, according to new research.

heavy rain leads drains to overflow, setting free germ and virus and polluting our waterways. if this water is swallowed while engaging in water sports, for example , it can make people sick. according to research, it is more likely to be viruses that cause us to be ill rather than the germs. the research was carried out as part of a project called Viroclime which aims to improve tools for tracking harmful viruses from pollution in european waters. it has looked at viruses from five european sites including spain, hungary, sweden, and greece and one site in brazil. there are two types of virus which could act as a signal to more serious water-based diseases -one belongs to the winter vomiting bug family, the outher to noroviruses.

scientific knowledge on waterborne diseases has been a little rare until now. mark sobsey, a virologist from the university of north carolina, told https://www.doczj.com/doc/906683894.html,:"if we had better data, which eu project viroclime can gath-er, and we analyze the data using a health risk-based approach, we could get better estimated disease burdens from outdoor water exposures. " however, he added that being able to monitor viruses in water could help them predict the effects of climate change and to develop new health protection measures to suit such change. it could also help predict a rise in the number of stomach illnesses by studying the link to rainfall.

viroclime is a shared project between universities in the uk, spain, greece, sweden, braziland hungary. a case study of the project finding will be put together after 18 months reseach.

you never forget your first whale. The impact it makes upon you is huge and life is never quite the same again. my first whale was a 40ft Grey, off the coast of California in 1979, and I've been a whale addict ever since, now i have to go whale watching regularly just to survive normal daily life.

i may be crazy but i am certainly not alone. the world is filled with whale watchers: since its begin-nings in the mid-fifties, whale watching has grown dramatically and now more than 13 million people join or-ganized whale watching trips every year.

as a faithful whale watcher, all your holidays center on whales.the only books you read are one about whales; you wear whale t-shirts, and every time you meet your friends you talk about whales.

so what is it about these larger-than-life animals that makes them so special? their enormous size is one possible explanation:imagine sitting in a small boat next whale almost as long as a Boeing 737. the fact that we know so little about them is another possibility:modern technology has taken

us to the moon and beyond, yet we are only just beginning to understand these extraordinary forms of intelligent life on our own planet.

planing and patience are just two essential requirements for successful whale watching. planning is needed because there are certain whale hot spots-where you have the best chance of seeing them-and be-cause the larger species tend to be on their way from feeding areas to breeding grounds, so rarely do they stay in one place for more than a few months at a time.

patience is necessary because , even under the best conditions, whales can be tricky to find. however, most commercial whale watching trips have a surprisingly high success rate because they tend to concentrate on well-known whale populations at peak seasons.

nasa scientists plan to use images shot from space and within the earth's atmosphere to help califor-nia monitor one of the worst droughts in its recorded history. scientists said they would make use of imaging tools to measure snowpack and groundwater levels and use other technologies to help better map and assess the water resources in a state that produces half the nation's fruits and vegetables.

scientist are being able to put all of these different kinds of instruments together, these measurements together, and start looking at the concept of perhaps closing the water budget of california.

while much of the united states has experienced heavy rains and snowfall this winter, california is faced with drought threatening to suffer from the biggest water crisis in its modern history. governor jerry brown declared a drought emergency last month and has called on state officials to prepare for water shorta-ges and develop solutions for potentially long-term dry weather. the california depatment of water re-sources has contracted with nasa to use data that will becollected next month with airplane mapping tools to measure water stored in the california snowpack, according to jeanine jones, the deparement's water re-sources manager. california could also soon make use of data from a satellite mapping system to measure the extent of land sinking, because of decreasing groundwater levels.

that data will help state officials plan for year-round water availability and lacate and determine the size of aquifers,as well as detecting any damage caused by excessive groundwater pumping. state officials hope to finally use nasa satellite imagery to track the surface area of agricultural land in california's central valley to more accurately assess the impact of the drought on agricultural production.

the wrold is filled with smart, talented and gifted people. we meet them every day. a few days ago, my car was not running well. i pulled it into a garage, and the young mechanic had it fixed in just

a few minutes. he knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine. iwas amazed. the sad truth is, great talent is not enough.

i am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn. i heard the other day that less than 5 percent of americans earn more than $100,00 a year. a business consultant who specializes in the medical trade was telling me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially. it was this business consultant who gave me the phease, "they are one skill away from great wealth. "

there is an old saying that goes, "job means' just over broke '". and unfortunately, i would say that the saying applies to millions of people. because school does not think financial intelligence is intelli-gence, most wrokers "live within their means" . they wrok and they pay the bills. instead i recommend young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn. when i ask the classes i teach, "how many of you can cook a better hamburger than mcdonald's? " al-most all the students raise their hands. i then ask, "so if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come mcdonald's makes more money than you? "the answer is obvious: mcdonald's is excellent at business systems. the reason why so many talented people are poor is that they focus on building a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business systems. the world is filled with talented poor people. they focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the ham-burger.

i was reading these interesting stories behind a group of great logos in the world. personally nike is my favorite one-it' s so simple. and i liked the stories behind them, which made me forgot all other things. mc-donald's, apple, mercedes benz and adidas own great logos as well, and they are among my favorites.

in the greek myth, nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. nike's logo was designed by carolyn davidson in 1971 for $35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.

the logo eas designed in 1962 by jim schindler to resemble the arch-shaped signs on the side of the company's then walk-up hamburger stand. later on, the two galden ar-ches were combined together to form the m. the mcdanald's name was added to the logo in 1968.

there are different stories behind apple's logo. the first logo was a reference to the religious story of adam and eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the tree of knowledge. one year later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by steve jobs and ronald wayne, and it de-scribed sir isaac newton sitting under an apple tree. this logo didn't stay long. one year later it was replaced almost immediately by graphic designer rob janoff's "rainbow apple ", a rainbow-colored sil-houette of an apple with a bite taken out of it.

the mercedes benz logo, which was originally created by gottlied daimler in 1909, consists of a simple description of a three -pointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. the company was founded by gottlieb daimler and wilhelm may-bach. mercedes is the name of maybach's elder daughter, while benz came as a result of a combination with benz, cie and dmg in 1926.

the adidas logo, which was created by the founder of the company adi dassler , represents

mountains, pointing towards the challenges that are seen ahead and goals that can be achieved. the logo was uesd for the first time in 1967.

it is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but man-ners on the road are becoming horrible. everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers be-hind the wheel. it is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver's seat is another matter.

road politeness is not only good manners, but good sence. it takes the most cool-headed drivers great pa-tience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. on the other hand, a little polite-ness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. a friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. but such behavious of politeness are by no means enough. many drivers nowa-days don't even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it. however, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. the same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and wherever they want to.

an experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. unfortunately, mod-ern drivers can't even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship. years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. it is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

tens of thousands of chinese have joined a debate on whether students should be separated into science and liberal arts classes in high school, a practice that allows them to stay competitive in college entrance exam by choosing preferred subjects. the debate came after the ministry of education began to ask for opinions from the public on friday on whether it was necessary and possible to stop the dividing system, which has been accepted for decades.

in a survey started by https://www.doczj.com/doc/906683894.html,, more than 260,000 people cast their votes, with 54 percent of those voted for the abolishment and 40 percent against.

a netizen from chengdu said: "sciences can activate the mind, while arts could strengthen their learning ability.

but some people disagreed with him. a netizen nicknamed "gentle scholar" said the students would have more burden if they have more subjects to study."you don't even know how difficult the courses are. i suggest a survey among students."

"abolish the current system of divison? we have to study nine subjects? finally we will study every-thing and have learnt little." wrote another netizen.

li yanling, an education expert in beijing, called on education authorities to consider student'

school burden.

chinese students are required to choose either arts or sciences subjects after ten years' education, which include six years in primary school, three years in junior high school and one year in senior high school.

beside the chinese language, mathematics and english, which are a must for everyone, science students are required to take physics, biology and chemistry, while arts students study politics, history and geography.

a man wakes up with a big hangover the morning after attending his company's annual summer partty. he can't even remember how he got home from the party, let along how he got so drunk and is deathly afraid of what he may have done or said the night before to make his wife angry.

the man forces his eyes open and the first things he sees are two headache tablets next to a glass of water on his table, and, next to them, a single red rose! he sits up with difficulty and sees his clothing hung on the back of his chair all clean and pressed and the rest of the house all in perfect order.

incredulous, the man takes the tablets and sees a black eye looking back at him from the bathroom mirror. then he finds a note next to the red rose on the table, "sweetie, breakfast is waiting for you on the stove. i left early to buy the cooking materials to make your favorite dinner tonight. i love you, darling!" the note was signed, "your loving wife. "

the man then walks into the kitchen. his doughter jessie is at the table, eating.

"jessie..what happened last night? " the man asks, with great fear.

"well, you came home around four o'clock in the morning, drunk and out of your mind. you tripped and fell onto the coffee table and broke it, and got this black eye when you crashed into the table's edge."

puzzled, the man asks jessie, "then why is there a rose on my table and breakfast on the stove waiting for me? "

"on that," jessie replies, "well, mom pulled you into your bedroom, and when she tried to undress you, you yelled, 'leave me alone; i' m married and i love my wife! '"

something as simple as a smile can mean friendliness in one culture, but impatience in another. even silence means different things in different places.

when trying to communicate in a foreign language, it's natural to use gestures as a way of explaining your point.

tapping your finger to your temple is a gesture to show memory in north america, but suggests

insanity in russia. even nodding one's head to show "yes" or shaking one's head to show "no" can be misunderstood abroad. the yes-no gestures are different in countries like bulgaria and albania. in turkey, "no" is gestured by nodding the head up and down.

it's not just individual gestures that can cause miscommunication, but the rate of gesturing can also cause miscommunication. some countries, like italy and spain, are known for talking with their hands. others use few body movements as a form of politeness. in parts of east asia, the gesture is considered unpleasant behavior, and even rude.

britain, along with many countries of northern europe and the far east, is classed as a "non-contact" culture, in which there's very little physical cantact in people's daily communication. even accidentally touching someone's arm is considered rude. by comparison, in the high-contact cultures of the middle east, latin america, and southern europe, physical touch is a big part of socializing.

naturally, these different standards of contact can lead to misunderstanding. an argentinean may see a scandinavian as cold, while the scandinavian may see the argentinean as impolite.

in most western countries, frequent eye contact is a sign of confidence and attentiveness. but in many asian, african, and latin american countries, however, unbroken eye contact would be considered rude. these cultures tend to pay more attention to hierarchy, and avoiding eye contact is a sign of respect for bosses and elder. in these parts of the world, chidren won't look at an adult who is speaking to them, and nor will employees to their bosses.

lynn r. taylor is such a special person.

born in buffalo, new york, on may 2, 1962, lynn taylor was just like all the other kids in her neighborhood. at the age of three she was diagnosed with wiles tumor, a cancer of the kidneys. given a "no-chance" prediction, doctors completely removed one of lynn's kidneys and part of another. they then predicted that if she survived to the age of five, she might possibly make ten.

in the decade that followed, lynn taylor met and surpassed all medical experts' gloom-and-doom predictions. at the age of fourteen she was in full remission, and by seventeen, she was considered cured. yet in this case, lynn's medical history was far from closed.

over the next twenty-three years, lynn earned her undergraduate degree and master's degree in economics. then she was awarded a scholarship to study at the university of sussex in england. there she was invited to teach and earned her second master's degree. upon returning to buffalo, the successful young woman engaged in a variety of high level jobs, including head of multicultural affairs at a local college.

recently lynn has added a new activity to her schedule-that of a cancer hospital volunteer. it is her wish to provide living proof for patients that cancer is not necessarily a death sentence but rather, as she has proved, something to overcome.

Chen Haoyu, a teacher at Beijing No. 25 Middle School, gives young students advice on how to deal with danger. ★If you are robbed Keep calm. lf you can not cry for help or run away. Give the robber your money. Try to remember what the robber looks like and tell the police later. ★If you are in a traffic accident If a car hits you. You should remember the car number. If it is a bicycle, try to call your parents before you let the rider go. This is because you don't know how seriously you are hurt ★If it is raining hard and there is lighting Don't stay in high places and stay away from trees. ★When there is a fire Get away as fast as yon can. Put wet things on your body and try to find an exit. Do not take the lift. ★If someone is drowning If you can't swim, don't get into the water. Cry out for help.
