真题翻译的艺术----2014年篇

此句考察的主要是it 形式主语和时间状语从句，it is the reason why...翻译成，这也是为什么。。。。注意articulate our reactions to it的翻译，此处可理解为清楚的表达对音乐的反应，对音乐的反应不就是我们的感受吗，其他的部分我们比较好理解。
参考翻译：这也是为什么当我们尝试用语言来描述音乐时，我们能清楚的表达对音乐的感受，但并没有领会音乐的精髓。
47.By all accounts he was a freethinking person, and a courageous one, and I find courage an essential quality for the understanding, let alone the performance, of his works.
此句考察的是并列句与插入语，我们可以逐个翻译and 所连接的内容，重点理解by all accounts: 据大家所说，人人都说。let alone the performance：更不用说表演，根据语境我们可以翻译成对他作品的演奏。Understanding和performance在翻译的时候都把n翻译成了v.
参考答案：据大家所说，贝多芬是一个思想自由的人，是一个有勇气的人，我发现勇气是理解贝多芬作品的关键，更不必说是演奏其作品的关键。

参考翻译：贝多芬习惯最大限度地增加音量，然后突然转为柔和的乐段，而在贝多芬之前，很少作曲家会这样做。
49. Especially significant was his view of freedom, which, for him, was associated with the rights and responsibilities of the individual: he advocated freedom of thought and of personal expression.
Especially significant was his view of freedom. 这个是一个完全倒装的句子，正常的语序应该是：His view of freedom was especially significant. which( 指代自由 ) ， for him, was associated with the rights and responsibilities of the individual 定语从句。翻译的时候可以单独成句。
参考翻译：尤其重要的是他关于自由的观点，在他自己看来，这种观点是和个人的权利和义务相关联的。他提倡的是思想和个人表达的自由。
50. One could interpret much of the work of Beethoven by saying that suffering is inevitable, but the courage to fight it renders life worth living.
这句话主干清晰，即“One could interpret … by saying that …”。saying 后面是that引导的宾语从句。翻译时，如果按照英文句子的语法规则，将整句话翻译成“我们可以通过认为苦难是不可避免的，但是与之抗争的勇气使得生活值得继续来解读贝多芬的大部分作品”，那势必造成中文句子状语成分过长，让整个句子变得不容易理解。这时可以把这一较长的状语成分与主句分离，从而达到句子平衡的效果。
参考翻译：人们可以这样诠释贝多芬的许多作品：苦难是不可避免的，但正是这种与苦难作斗争的勇气给了我们生存的意义。
