Old age may not sound exciting. But recent findings offer good news for older people and for people worried about getting older.

Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of fifty. In fact, they say by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were when they were eighteen years old. The findings came from a survey of more than three hundred forty thousand adults in the United States. The Gallup Organization questioned them by telephone in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five. The researchers asked questions about emotions like happiness, sadness and worry. They also asked about mental or emotional stress. They found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five.

The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties. Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. The people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties. The study also showed that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that,as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.Professor Stone says the emotional patterns could be linked to changes in how people see the world, or maybe even changes in brain chemistry.

The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of

happiness and well-being related to age.

Rabbits are easy to raise. They are clean and quiet. They don’t need a lot of room. And it costs a small amount of money to feed them, but you can get a big return.

One male and two females will produce as many as fifty more rabbits in a year. That is enough to provide enough meat for a family.Rabbit meat is high in protein and low in fat.You don’t have to be a farmer to raise rabbits. You can raise them in the city.Rabbit houses are easy to make with wood and wire. They don’t have to be very big.But each rabbit must have its own little room in the house. This is very important. Each room should be about 75 centimeters wide,60 centimeters high and one meter deep.Fencing is used for the sides and the floor of the rabbit house. The holes in the wire fencing should be about one centimeter square.Waste from the animals will drop through the holes. This keeps the rabbit house clean and dry.Rabbits need a lot of fresh air and sunlight.Cover the sides of the rabbit house only to protect it from rain.Rabbits eat mostly grass and leaves.Hang feeding containers on the outside of the house to let the rabbits eat whenever they want. They simply pull the grass and leaves through the holes in the fence. Each room should have fresh water. The water containers should be heavy so the rabbits cannot turn them over.Or you can tie the containers to the fence. One month after mating(交配),female rabbits give birth to about eight babies. In two months,a baby rabbit should weigh about two kilograms. This is big enough to make a meal for a small family.

Rabbits are also valuable for their fur.It takes time, skill and money to prepare the fur and skin for use.If you have only a few rabbits.it probably would be best to let a tanner(制革工)prepare the fur for you.Skill is also needed to remove the fur from the rabbit.

But rabbits do not have to be dead to be valuable. Many people enjoy keeping rabbits as friendly pets. And rabbit waste makes an excellent fertilizer(肥料).It can be mixed directly into the soil to improve the growth of vegetables, trees and flowering plants.

29.The text is written mainly_________.

A.to explain why rabbits are clean and quiet

B.to let people know more about rabbits

C.to tell readers how to raise rabbits

D.to introduce a small friendly animal pet

30.What is important if you raise rabbits?

A.Holes are needed for waste to drop through.

B.Each rabbit must be given a separate room.

C.Each room must have clean water every day.

D.Feeding containers are hung on the fence.

31.Why should the holes in the wire fence be about one centimeter square?

A.Because the holes let in sunlight.

B.Because rabbits like these holes

C.Because rabbits get food from them

D.Because waste of rabbits drops through the boles.

32.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?

A.You don’t have to kill rabbits to make more money.

B.Rabbits cannot be sold to make money when they are alive.

C.Rabbits are more valuable when they are alive.

D.Rabbits have to be killed to be more valuable.

D

Although my father wasn’t a doctor,he made his own brand of“house calls”.I followed him as he brought a plate of my mother’s home cooking to an elderly man named Frank on all major holidays, and when Frank was sick.As far as I know, their only connection was that Frank was an occasional customer at Dad’s small gas station.Frank’s home was a two-room house on the rough side of town with a rotten front porch(门廊)that you could fall through if you weren’t careful.Through his caring attitude,my father was teaching me to be a doctor, although neither of us knew it at the time。

When I was 13, my father developed lung cancer. He brought home a diagram the doctor drew showing where his cancer was and told me that he was going to die.

The big green oxygen tank with plastic tubing became a central feature of our living room next to his easy chair.Several months passed and his condition worsened. He asked me to take care of my mother when he was gone.He said,”I love you,son .”That night he died.

When you’re 13 and your father dies, you have some choices to make. You can use the circumstance as an excuse for letting your behavior and grades go down the drain,or you can honor his memory and try to do something positive with yourself.I focused my energy on my school work and my goal of becoming a doctor。

33.According to the passage,we k now that the author’s father was_______.

A.hardworking B.ambitious C.knowledgeable D.considerate 34.The underlined part “go down the drain” in the last paragraph probably means “_______”.

A.stay the same B.get along as expected

C.become worse D.improve immediately

35.What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Father’s lung ca ncer B.Father and my career choice

C.Father and an elderly man D.Father—a lung cancer patient

华美实验学校 高三英语限时训练(六) 第一部分阅读理解(共9小题;每小题2分,满分18分) 第一节: 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中选出最佳选项。 Planning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs. AVOID BIG EVENTS Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of accommodation and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19 Oct.) cost £169.15 at https://www.doczj.com/doc/95853139.html,. A week later, the same room cost £118.15. If you can be flexible and want to know dates to avoid—or you?re looking for a big event to pass your time—check out sites such as https://www.doczj.com/doc/95853139.html,, which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category. STAYAWAY FROM THE STATION If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more for the sake of convenience at the start of your holiday. Don?t be too choosy about the part of town you stay in. Booking two months in advance, the cheapest room at Travelodge?s Central Euston hotel in London for Saturday 22 September was £95.95. A room just a tube journey away at its Covent Garden hotel was £75.75. And at Farringdon, a double room cost just £62.95. LOOK AFTER YOURSELF Really central hotels in cities such as London, Edinburgh and Cardiff can cost a fortune, especially at weekends and during big events. As an alternative consider checking into a self-catering flat with its own kitchen. Often these flats are hidden away on the top floors of city center buildings. A great example is the historic O?Neill Flat on Edinburgh?s Royal Mile, available for £420 for five days in late September, with rooms for four adults. GET ON A BIKE London?s …Boris bikes? have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programmers that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transport or car parking costs. Among the smaller cities with their own programmers are Newcastle (casual members pay around £1.50 for two hours) and Cardiff (free for up to 30 minutes, or £5 per day). 1. The Brighton Comedy Festival is mentioned mainly to show big events may ________. A. help travelers pass time B. attract lots of travelers to the UK C. allow travelers to make flexible plans D. cause travelers to pay more for accommodation 2. The passage shows that the O?Neill Flat ________. A. lies on the ground floor B. is located in central London

Now he was free as a bird — free to draw, paint, play basketball, and watch television…anything he wanted to do. Suddenly, the doorbell rang, startling (使惊吓) him. It was his pain of a cousin, Max. “Hi!” screamed Max as he jumped on Kevin’s bed. “I have come to stay here for the holidays.” Kevin had never expected his mother’s surprise to be this bad. If this was the start of his vacation, then the next few weeks were going to be the worst experience of his life. The next few days were horrible for Kevin. After breakfast, Kevin decided to make a painting. Luckily, Max was not around. Kevin spread out all his art supplies and started painting some beautiful scenery. When he was doing the finishing touches, Max entered the room with a Pepsi bottle. He slipped on some water, spilling Pepsi all over the painting and totally ruining it. The next day was even worse. Everything was peaceful until the evening. It all started when Max put the dirty clothes in the washing machine. After some time, Kevin heard some strange sounds from the washing machine. He went to check and found that Max had put his best pair of shoes into the machine, along with the clothes. One day, Kevin was looking through the newspaper when some interesting news caught his attention. He read it aloud: “The world famous philatelist (集邮家) Dick Brown’s stamps were stolen last week from his house. Several other stamp robberies also have taken place, and police suspect that all the robberies are linked.” This piece of news concluded by warning all stamp collectors to keep their stamps safe.

During every visit I found my way into a big reading room to touch a great and ancient globe sitting in front of the largest windows. I liked to look at Africa, with the coded colors of the different countries like the Belgian Congo and Rhodesia, and try to remember which countries were fighting to be free just as we were struggling for civil rights. I had heard Daddy talking about the struggle, arguing with the television as someone discussed it on a news show. On Saturday, as I wandered through the young adult section. I saw a title: Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. I could tell from looking at the s helf that she’d written a lot of books, but I didn’t know anything about her. I had learned from experience that titles weren’t everything. A book that sounded great on the shelf could be dull once you got it home, and every bad book I brought home meant one less book to read until we went back in a week. So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first paragraphs: “Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents” grumbled Jo, lying on the rug. “It’s so dreadful to be poor” sighed Med, looking down at her old dress. “I don’t think it’s fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and other girls nothing at all” added little Amy, with an injured sniff. “We have got Father and Mother and each other.” said Beth contentedly from her corner. I h ad decided on some other books to take home, because I didn’t look through the rest of the section that day. I read and read and read Little Women.I wouldn’t put it down until the end. Even the freedom to watch weekend television held no appeal for me in girls who could almost be like me, especially Jo, the heroine. It seemed to me a shame that she wasn’t Black: then our similarity would be complete. She loved to read, she loved to make up plays, she hated acting ladylike, she had a dreadful temper. I had found a kindred spirit(志趣相投的人). 21. What can be learned about the author’s father?
