长期以来，学术界研究孔子，把《论语》视作唯一信得过的依据；并在有意无意之间把它当成了孔子乃至孔门思想的全面记录。而没有注意到《论语》编纂也是有重点的，也要遵循不与“六艺”“六经”重复的基本原则，遵循著书立说的一般规律。这就导致人们对《论语》产生误解。例如，现代所有的《论语》普及本，都把孔门所谓的“士”译作“读书人”，不少教育史论著认为孔门的教育内容只有道德教育和知识教育，并以前者为重心。
其实，春秋时代还没有常备军，官制文武不分职。各级官吏平日以理治民，农闲时节教民备战，战时出为带兵的将领。与此相应的礼、乐、射、御、书、数六艺教育，也是文武兼备的。其中“射”是射箭，“御”是驾驭战车，即使平时演练也有“五射”“五御”等极为繁难的要求，属于早已规范化了的系统的军事教育科目。以历史的眼光看射、御，其专业化程度并不亚于现代射击与驾驶战车技术。借用现代术语来说：射、御这两项武艺，是每个受教育者必修的基础课，而不是可学可不学的选修课。
至于孔子所办的私学，既然教育目的仍然是培养修己治人的“君子”，那就不能不受官学教育传统的影响，不能不以传统“六艺”为弟子必修的基础课；更不能不受当时社会需要的制约，致力于培养文武兼备的人才。不然的话，孔门弟子从政以后，怎么能够适应当时社会的实际需要？孔子私学还会有什么吸引力？
关于孔门的武艺传授，《礼记·射义》中有颇为生动具体的记述。从孔子带领弟子在“矍相之圃”演习“乡射礼”的情况来看，孔门射艺教学既有孔子亲自示范，又有对要领的口头讲解，还十分重视将德育贯穿其间。孔子做射箭示范时“观者如堵墙”，可见其射艺之精湛。至于孔子驾驭战车的技艺，《论语·子罕》中也有反映：达巷党人叹孔子“博学而无所成名”，
即谓之学而不专、缺乏强项。孔子知道了，便与门下弟子商议，拟在射、御二艺中选一艺来展示所长。这说明在孔子及其同时代人的心目中，所谓的“学”，在很大程度上还是传统的“六艺”之学。孔子经过比较权衡，选定以“执御”来展示专长，可见其御艺亦相当娴熟，可能更优于射艺。由此窥测孔门之御艺传授及弟子驾驭战车的水平，应当也不会比射艺差。以往论者多将“御”混同于一般的赶马车。其实，赶马车称“仆”，如《论语·子路》中有“
