Life is difficult.

It is a great truth because once we truly understand and accept it, then life is no longer difficult.

Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nations.

What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their natures, cause us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes endless serious of problems, life is always difficulties and is full of pain as well as joy.

Yes, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious tests that tell us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to resolve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, "Those things that hurt, instruct." Forty-thousand of the world's young children die every day. This is 15 million a year. Many of these deaths can be prevented. In fact, experts say, techniques now exist to save the lives of half of these children. The techniques are medically effective, simple to use and low cost.

The biggest task bas been to inform parents about these life-saving techniques.

Diarrhea(腹泻)is the main cause of death among children in developing countries. Diarrhea results when the body tries to clear itself of harmful bacteria(细菌). The body does this by getting out liquids, sometimes uncontrollably. If too much water, sugar and salt are lost in this way, the body cannot work normally. The child may die.

The United Nations International Children's Fund, UNICEF, introduces a technique. It uses a simple mixture of sugar and salt in water. The mixture does not stop diarrhea. But if used often as needed, it keeps fluid (体液) levels normal until the body has fought off the harmful bacteria. In Egypt, for example, the treatment was used in a children's health care program in the province of Alexandria. It reduced by one-half the number of deaths caused by diarrhea. The technique bas now been used throughout the country.

第65题:

According to the passage, a large number of children can be saved only when ________。

Millions of hamburgers are eaten by pepole in every comer of the world every, day. Together with hot dogs and Coca-Cola, hamburgers have been the most important American contribution(贡献) to international eating habits.

The name "hamburger" has nothing to do with ham(火腿). It is believed that the hamburger was first brought to the United States by

Germans from the city of Hamburg some time in the 1850s.

From then on the hamburger became a kind of popular American fast food.

Now young people in Asia, Europe and South America have learned to eat while on the move; a hamburger in one hand and a soft drink in the other. There have been cries to anger from Italy and Spain about the shortening of the usual lunch break. Instead, young people have discovered a lunch for which they don't have to stop at all.

However, there are clouds over the hamburger's world. People who concern about health dislike the high animal fat in the hamburger. They think the time saved seems a high price to pay for poor health. The packages in which hamburgers are usually served are causing serious pollution problems in many large cities. Big hamburger companies are destroying large areas of South American rainforest to produce the cheap meat they need. So, will the hamburger celebrate its next century?

第68题:

In which way do hamburgers change people's eating habits?

A.People can have their meals at any time of the day.

B.They can be served in any restaurant.

C.People can have them with soft drinks.

D.Meal time can be greatly reduced.

Once again I spelt out directions even a blind person could follow, I glanced impatiently at my watch, and waited. Only two hours remained until my flight left and it was an hour-and-a-half trip to the airport. Outside, heavy rains were pouring down. My house was so far north in the city that buses pass only three times a day. The telephone rang again. "Terribly sorry," began the man at the taxi company. Then I rea-lized that the taxi company, flooded with calls, could only offer in-city runs. I had heard this happens when the weather gets bad. I shouted into the phone that I had a plane to catch and I would meet the taxi outside my house. Standing in the wind-driven rain, I looked up and down the road. No taxi. A car went by, driver and passenger staring at the crazy foreigner in the downpour. Finally a white car appeared and pulled to a stop. A young man threw open the door, waving for me to get in. Shaking with cold and anger, I climbed in.

Choose the best word or phrase for each numbered blank and mark A, B,C, or Don your ANSWER SHEET 1. Text Most young people enjoy physical activities, walking, cycling, football, or mountaineering. These who have a passion 26 climbing high and difficult mountains are often 27 with astonishment. Why are men and women 28 to suffer cold and hardship, and to 29 on high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activities 30 which men give their leisure. There are no man-made rules, as there are for 31 as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which it would be dangerous to 32 , but it is this freedom from man-made rules 33 makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to their own 34 . If we 35 mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is 36 mountaineering is not a “team work”. However, it is only our misunderstanding. There are, in fact, no :matches”37 “teams”of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may 38 , obviously, there is teamwork. A mountain climber knows that he may have to fight with natural 39 that ate stronger and more powerful than man. His sport requires high mental and 40 qualities. A mountain climber 41 to improve on skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions 42 in their early twenties. But it is not 43 for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more 44 than younger men, but they probably climb more skill and less 45 of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.
