Fear started taking over. I was walking into my first school in America. I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my mother, who had been here for three years, hoping America would help my future. My father decided that I would be better off going to school here, so I enrolled (注册) in the local high school in my new town.
I had no idea what to do. I didn’t know anybody in my classes. On the first day, I went to my second period class after I had missed my first. I was already confused (迷惑))because in India the teachers change according to period while most of the students have the same periods.
With concern on one hand and fear on the other, I opened the door slowly. Everyones eyes were on me as I entered the room. Without paying attention to them, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered, “Yes.” His voice made me feel a little relaxed. He gave me a piece of paper called Course Requirements, which I would never get in my previous school in India because we didn’t have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India we had our own seat, so I never needed to worry about that. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the pictures produced by the overhead projector(投影仪). In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke.
Since it was my first day, I was confused about which hallway to use, but I managed to get to my classes without asking anyone. Every confusion seemed like an obstacle(障碍)I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I was on my way to the bus which we didn’t have in India either. I saw my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, today wasn’t so bad. As time passed that year, I developed some friendships and started to love my school.

I was having a picnic day with my sister. We both like to ride her motorcycle and that day we drove to the nearest park. We bought some coffee and cakes, and then we were enjoying our food. Within a few hours, the sky was changing and looked ready to drop a heavy rain. We packed everything and were ready to go. My sister, who was sitting on a bench, suddenly was very still and couldn’t talk to me. she didn’t move. Her eyes were rolling and she was about to lose consciousness(知觉). I held her in my arms and asked if she wanted to rest. She didn’t answer and only said “Sorry”.
It started to rain and I didn’t know what to do. She was fighting to stay aware but her skin was pale and her eyes were acting strange. Suddenly, from nowhere, a woman on a bicycle appeared, wearing a raincoat. “She isn’t looking good. Do you want me to call an ambulance(救护车)?” “Yes, please, yes!” I begged.
She did. Struggling with the rain, she managed to call some policemen, who quickly helped me carry my sister to a safer place. The ambulance arrived and we went to a hospital, where she was treated in time and she came to life in the morning after rest and medical help.
An interesting fact was that I guessed the woman in the raincoat was a doctor or a nurse. I later learned from o ne of the police officers who told me: “No, she was an ordinary person who took some courses on emergency situations(紧急情況).
I am so grateful that she appeared exactly at he right moment. I don’t know why or how. I didn’t even get the chance to say thanks to her.

Who needs friends? According to most psychologists (心理学家)we all do, especially nowadays when so many other aspects (方面)of modern life are changing. It seems that having friends keeps us both healthy and happy.
The number of TV series about groups of friends shows just how important friendship is to us. Psychologist Dorothy Rowe says that many of us now turn to our friends, instead of our families, for advice, comfort and security. One woman named Rebecca she interviewed even told her that if she had got to choose between her husband and her friend. she would choose her friend.
Since our friends mean so much to us, it is not surprising that the happiest marriages are also friendships. “Once the romantic stage of a relationship has passed, it is friendship that holds people together, " says Rowe. If the couple do not make some changes, they will either get tired of each other and break up or stay together and seek friendship with others.
But is friendship equally important to women and men? According to author Rhonda Pritchard, women are more likely than men to have close friends. "You tell a friend things that you’d never tell a partner, says one woman she interviewed. For men, friendship is usually based on doing things together rather than the private conversations that are typical of women friends. Men share time and activities like building a fence or a business, running, riding a bike, fishing or watching football, but they don' t often share their feelings.
Although many women find their relationships with a husband or boyfriend is not enough, many men say that their partner is their best friend. Even women who are very happily married are likely to become very unhappy without a close friend and can even find the breakup of a close friendship as painful as the end of a marriage.
Lasting friendships can provide a lot of the same support that families provided in the past, but the perfect situation is to have your family there for you as well. Friendships and family relationships can both change, but a friend will not consider you when making really important decisions in the same way that a family member will.
