第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题; 每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A 、B 、C 和D )中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

You may not pay much attention to your daily elevator ride. But Lee Gray, PhD, of the University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this over looked form of public transport. He is known as the “Elevator Guy”.

“The lift becomes this interesting social space where etiquette (礼仪) is sort of odd,” Gray told BBC. “They are socially very interesting but often very awkward places.”

We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, liftusers unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements.

He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want—it’s your own little box. If there are two of you, you go into different cor-ners, standing diagonally (对角线地) across from each other to create distance. When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle. And when there is a fourth person it becomes a square, with someone in every corner. A fifth person is probably going to have to stand in the middle.

New entrants(新进入者)to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act decisively. Once in, for most people the rule is sim-ple—look down, or look at your phone.

Why are we so awkward in lifts?

“You don’t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psy-chologist at the Free University of Berlin, told BBC. “Usually when we meet other people we ha ve about an arm’s length of distance between us. And that’s not possible in most elevators.”

In such a small, enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that cannot be construed (理解) as threatening or odd. “The easiest way to do this is to

av oid eye contact,” she said.

. 21. According to Gray, when people enter an elevator, they usually _________

A.turn around and greet one another

B.look around or examine their phone

C.make eye contact with those in the elevator

D.try to keep a distance from other people

22. Which of the following describes how people usually stand when there are at least two persons in an elevator?

A. B. C.

D.

The point in the chart refers to one person

23. The underlined phrase “size up” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to _______.

A. judge

B. ignore

C. put up with

D. make the best of

24. According to the article, people feel awkward in lifts because of ______.

A. someone’s odd behaviors

B. the lack of space

C. their unfamiliarity with one another

D. their eye contact with each other

B Ever wonder how this season’s celebrations affect the environment? Guest blogger Krista Fairles takes an amusing look at this very topic:

The holidays are a wonderful, cheerful time when most people wait for Santa to bring them presents. But I’m not like most people. I spend my time wondering just what the environmental impacts of Santa Claus and his reindeer are, and more importantly, how I can calculate those impacts.

Lately I’ve been particularly curious as to whether Santa’s old sled is a cle an green flying machine, or if he should be replacing his 8 reindeer with an environmentally-friendly car.

I should mention that, surprisingly, I was unable to find statistics specific to Santa’s magical flying reindeer, so these calculations use numbe rs from various sources and may not represent actual pollution caused by Santa and his animals. In other words, don’t complain to the government about the damage Santa is causing the environment based on this article.

Santa’s yearly trip around the glo be is 44,000km long, twice the average of a North American driver. If we assume that the magic provides the altitude for this trip, then reindeer power only needs to push Santa’s sled forward. To complete the trip in 12 hours, I estimate they must travel at a speed of about 3100km/h. To travel at this speed, for this length of time, the reindeer need to eat an incredible 980 million calories each!!

So the next question is: how much food is in 980 million calories? Well, if they’re eating corn, they’d need to eat 16,500 lbs each — or 1.6 acres of food.

Growing 12.8 acres of corn has its own implications for the environment that we’ll leave for another calculation.

We now need to consider that during the global trip the reindeer are “letting out” some of that corn in the form of methane (甲烷,沼气). A resting cow produces 110 kg of methane per year, so flying reindeer would each let out about 4.8 tons. With methane causing 20 times the global warming damage of CO2, and the altitude increasing that damage by 1000% that another 20 times, we can put Santa’s round-trip emissions at 15,488 tons. This is much more than the 100 tons an environmentally-friendly car would release on the same trip!

Bad Santa.

25.According to Paragraph 6, how many acres of corn would Santa need to feed 10 reindeer?

A.1.6. B.16. C.12.8. D.128. 26.Which of the following words best describes the language style of the passage? A.Humourous and concerned. B.Cheerful and friendly.

C.Academic and formal. D.Serious and boring.

27.:Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

A.Is Santa Driving Clean and Green?

B.Santa, Watch Where You’re Going!

C.Santa Claus Is Coming to Town!

D.Let’s Reduce Waste on Christmas Celebrations!

Every few years, we buy an expensive new PC and love how fast it starts up ,runs programs and loads websites. Surely though, it starts to slow down until eventually we are pulling our hair out waiting for it to do routine tasks.

It’s not the computer software that’s the problem. Rather, the problem lies with changes that occur to the PC’s software. And the two most common causes are registry (注册衝)error and spyware/viruses

Every time you ( or your kids) load a program, game, or file, your PCs software registry is updated with new instructions needed to operate that item. However, when the item is removed, these instructions usually remain on your PC. Every time you run your computer, it tries to carry out these instructions but, because the related program can’t be found, it causes a registry error. Your PC is doing a lot more work than it should be, and the result is a significantly slower computer.

One way to manage this is with a neat little tool from Support. Com, a Silicon Valley based company. It's called ARO 2013 and it scans, identifies, and fixes registry errors-- resulting in a computer that's a lot more like it was when you first bought it .It’s so easy to install and use that It has been downloaded more than 30 million times.

Spyware and viruses are software programs loaded on your computer without your knowledge permission They get onto our computers through files that we download from the Internet or as attachments to emails. They have various purposes, including: changing the default (默认值)search engine in your browser; tracking your Web surfing habits and showing you targeted adver-tising using your email program to send out junk emails; stealing your personal information.

They tend to take up a lot of computing power and will also slow down your computer.

The simple rule to follow is to never download any free software programs from unknown companies, especially screensavers, emoticons, and the like. In addition you should never open any attachment to an email unless you are 100 percent certain you know and trust the sender. Having a

good anti-virus/ spyware removal software running at all times will also help

28. What's the author's main purpose in writing this text?

A.To inform readers of causes and solutions to certain PC

B.To advertise an useful tool named ARO 2013 .from https://www.doczj.com/doc/be804540.html,.

C.To warn readers not to download any file, game or attachment

D. To teach readers how to solve some complicated PC problems.

29. The underlined part in the first paragraph probably means that .

A. it is a pleasure to wait for computers to start and run

https://www.doczj.com/doc/be804540.html,ing computes for too long will do barm to our health

C.it always takes a long time for computers to do routine work

D. computters run so slow that we will become impatient and angry.

30. Which of the following statemoxts is TRUE?

A.When a downloaded item is removed, so are its instructions

B. ARO 2013 is very popular because it is easy to use and free of charge.

C.Spyware can help people to block out junk emails from other addresses.

D.Sometimes people are unaware of their downloading spyware and viruses.

31where does this passage most probably come from?

A. A science textbook.

B. A travel brochure.

C. A computer magazine.

D. An entertainment newspaper.

D

Today, the majority of American farmland is controlled by industrial agriculture;the system of chemically intensive (加强的)food production developed in the decades after World War II, with large single-crop farms and animal production buildings.

Back then, industrial agriculture was praised as a technological victory that would en-able a fast-increasing world population to feed itself. Today, a growing group of agricultural experts-including farmers as well as scientists and policy makers-sees industrial agriculture as a dead end, a mistaken application to living systems of ways more suitable for making planes and refrigerators.

The influences of industrial agriculture on the environment, public heath, and the coun-tryside make it an unsustainable (不可持续的)w ay to grow our f o o d over the long term.

At the centre of industrial food production is monocuhure-the practice of growing single crops intensively on a very large scale. Com, wheat, soybeans, cotton and rice are all commonly grown this way in tihe United States. ?

Monoculture fanning relies heavily on chemical inputs such as fertilizers and pesti-cides. The fetilizers arc needed because growing the same plant in the same place year after year quickly uses up the nutrients that the plant relies on, and these nutrients have to

be prodded somehow. The pesticides are needed because monoculture fields are highly attractive to certain weeds and insect pests.|

In the industrial system of meat production, meat animals are “finished”-prepared for killing-at large places called CAFOs, confined(受局限的)animal feeding operations, where their mobility is limited and they are fed a high-calorie, grain-based diet, often strengthened with antibiotics and hormones, to increase their weight. Their waste is gathered and becomes an environmental problem, not the convenient source of fertilizer that can be used for more small farms.

Industrial agriculture damages the soil, water, and even the climate on an ex-traordinary scale. It uses up soil and leaves it unprotected to removal of soil. Chemical fertiliz-er competitions and CAFO wastes add to global warming and create non-oxygen “dead zones” at the mouths of major waterways. Herbicides(除草剂)and pesticides harm wild-life and can risk human health as well. Biodiversity in and near monoculture fields takes a hit, as populations of birds and beneficial insects decrease.

32.After World War II, industrial agriculture was considered as

A.a developed system of organically intensive food production

B.a technological success to feed a bigger and bigger populaton

C.a wrong application to living systems of plants and animals

D.a better way suitable for producing planes and refrigerators

33.Which of the following is wrong about monoculture?

A. Com, wheat an d cotton are ail growing in an eco-friendly way in the USA.

B. It is a practice of growing single crops intensively on a very large scale.

C’ Monoculture farming depends on chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

0. Some weeds and insect pests are likely to appear in monoculture fields.

34.Which of the following is an environmental problem for industrial] meat production?

A. Limited freedom of animals.

B. High-calorie diet for animals

C. Antibiotics and hormones.

D. Animals'waste.

35.The last sentence of the passage means that with the decreasing of birds and good in-sects biodiversity in and near monoculture fields will be .

A. protected

B. strengthened

C. affected

D. encouraged

高三英语周练1

高三英语周练(1)试题 命题人:考试时间:50分钟总分:89分 Ⅰ. 阅读理解(满分39分) A Food festivals around the world Stilton Cheese Rolling May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane(赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese. Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy(辛辣),but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you! La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts La Tomatina—the world's largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd. The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash! 1. In the Stilton cheese rolling competition, competitors on each team must________. A. wear various formal clothes B. roll a wooden cheese in their own lane C. kick or throw their cheese D. use a real cheese weighing about four kilos 2. Where is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival held? A. In New Mexico. B. In the Caribbean. C. In Australia. D. In China.
