Unit 2 Environmental Protection O bjectives

Short Conversations

Directions: You will hear two short conversations in this section. Each conversation will be spoken twice. Listen carefully and do the exercises.

Task 1Fill in the blanks with the words you hear in Conversation 1 .

W: Is there a lot of oil and coal in your country?

M: There is some, but my country is not among the leading producers. The oil and coal deposits are in the north of my country. Your country is a big oil producer, isn’t it?

W: Yes, it is. My country is famous for having those natural resources. We also have

a lot of natural gas.

M: We have some too. Do you have a lot of coal?

W: No coal has been discovered in my country, but there may be undiscovered deposits. We don’t have many metal deposits.

M: There are a few in my country. We have deposit of gold, but they are very small. W: These resources are precious wealth to human beings on the earth.

T ask 2 Listen to Conversation 2 and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false

M: We are going to do some research on the pollution of the Pearl River. Do you have any idea about it?

M: It is known that water pollution is a great harm to people's health, so I think our work is very meaningful.

W: And we can visit some factories along the river.

M: Good idea. Most of factories always pollute the surroundings by directly pouring waste water into rivers.

W: We can also borrow some books on this topic.

M: Ok. Let us go to the library now.

A: Are there any interesting stories in the newspapers?

B: There are a few stories about natural disasters. There is a massive forest fire in Australia. It covered 50 square kilometers in the area and destroyed a huge area of forest.

A: Was it caused accidentally or naturally?

B: Nobody knows the reason of it. Sometimes it gets so hot that fires begin naturally in Australia and Africa. And it has been very hot there recently. The drought in Africa is causing starvation. Millions of people have migrated to other areas.

A: What will international aid agencies do?

B: The European Union has sent several plants and relief supplies. Several countries have sent soldiers to distribute food and medical supplies. Refugee camps have been set up throughout the region.

A: How many countries have been affected?

B: Six countries have been seriously affected and the refugees are migrating to surrounding countries.

Task 2 Listen to Dialogue 2 and answer the following questions.

1. What did the woman buy when she traveled? Some jewelry made from gold.

2. What about the gold reserves in the country? Few gold mines.

3. Where is the gold found? In mountain steams.

4. What has a great influence on the country’s environment? The oil industry.

5. Some damage is under control, isn’t it? Yes, it is.

W: When I traveled around your country, I bought some jewelry made from gold. The jewelry told me that there are few gold mines in your country. The gold was found in mountain steams.

M: T hat’s right. A few people go panning for gold in rivers.

W: Y ou have many trees in your country. That’s another natural resource.

M: I t’s a natural resource that we hardly use. Government policy is to conserve those forests.

W: I see. That’s probably a good idea. Too many forests are being destroyed.

M: Is your country’s environment being damaged by the oil industry?

W: We have some inspections, but it is very hard to avoid pollution when extracting oil. There has been some damage, but it is under control.

M: That’s relief.

Speaking Practice

Task 1Work in pairs. Try to introduce someone you admire to your partner. Make a dialogue using the following sentence patterns.

T ask 2W ork in pairs. Pleases make up your own dialogues based on the following situations, and you may refer to the sentences in Language bank.

Situation2: Suppose you with your friends are standing by a polluted river. Make up

a dialogue about environmental protection.
