Kevin, diagnosed with Dyslexia(读写困难症), rarely spoke a word in class, and if he did, it would be a “Yes,” “No,” or “Maybe,” in response to questions. He always scored badly in tests and saw no hope for the future. That was until he met Sarah, an advisor at a youth centre Kidpreneur.

In 2012, Kevin attended a course called Ready Set Go in that centre. The course was for disadvantaged kids in Kingswood – a low –income area in Sydney’s western suburbs – and its goal was to teach the kids how to create businesses and offer value to the neighborhood.

At the end of the course, Sarah took the kids to the local area. She asked volunteers to share their business experiences – Kevin immediately put up his hand. His challenge was to trade his hot – dog selling service for free bread at a bakery. Although scared, Kevin was able to share his entrepreneur(创业) story with the shop owner and asked if he could exchange his service for some bread. Unexpectedly, the shop owner told Kevin how moved he was by his story and handed him some bread for free. By the end of the afternoon, his belief in himself and what was possible was at an all- time high.

The following week, Kevin sold 70 hot – dogs in two hours and made over $200. Soon after, he delivered

public speeches in 20 schools, and was selected as part of his school’s leadership team. Now he heads a business group working on how to increase potential customer base.

GOING TO UNIVERSITY is supposed to be a mind-broadening experience. That statement is probably made in comparison to training for work straight after school, which might not be so encouraging. But is it actually true? Jessika Golle of the University of Tübingen, in Germany, thought she would try to find out. Her result, however, is not quite what might be expected. As she reports in Psychological Science this week, she found that those who have been to university do indeed seem to leave with broader and more inquiring minds than those who have spent their immediate post-school years in vocational (职业的) training for work. However, it was not the case that university broadened minds. Rather, work seemed to narrow them.

Dr. Golle came to this conclusion after she and a team of colleagues studied the early careers of 2,095 German youngsters. The team used two standardized tests to assess their volunteers. One was of personality traits, including openness, conscientiousness(认真)and so on. The other was of attitudes, such as realistic, investigative and enterprising. They administered both tests twice—once towards the end of each volunteer’s time at school, and t hen

again six years later. Of the original group, 382 were on the intermediate track, from which there was a choice between the academic and vocational routes, and it was on these that the researchers focused. University beckoned for 212 of them. The remaining 170 chose vocational training and a job.

When it came to the second round of tests, Dr. Golle found that the personalities of those who had gone to university had not changed significantly. Those who had undergone vocational training and then got jobs were not that much changed in personality, either—except in one crucial respect. They had become more conscientious.

That sounds like a good thing, certainly compared with the common public image of undergraduates as a bunch of lazybones. But changes in attitude that the researchers recorded were rather worrying. In the university group, again, none were detectable. But those who had chosen the vocational route showed marked drops in interest in tasks that are investigative and enterprising in nature. And that might restrict their choice of careers.

Some investigative and enterprising jobs, such as scientific research, are, indeed beyond the degreeless. But many, particularly in Germany, with its tradition of vocational training, are not. The researchers mention, for example, computer programmers and finance-sector workers as careers requiring these traits. If Dr. Golle is correct, and changes in attitude brought about by the very training Germany prides itself on are narrowing people’s choices, that is indeed a matter worthy of serious consideration.

38. Which of the following can best replace “beckoned for” in Paragraph 2?

A. Examined.

C. Organized.

The mass death of flying foxes in extreme heat in North Queensland last month underlines the importance of

University of Queensland wildlife research released today. The UQ research sheds light on how various species have responded to major climate events.

A study led by UQ School of Earth and Environmental Science researcher Dr Sean Maxwell has spent more than 70 years quantifying the responses of various species.

“The growing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as cyclones, droughts and floods is causing unpredictable and immediate changes to ecosystems and block ing existing management efforts,” Dr Maxwell said.“Some of the negative responses we found were quite concerning, including more than 100 cases of dramatic population declines and 31 cases of local population extinction following an extreme event.”

"Populations of critically endangered bird species in Hawaii, such as the palia, have been annihilated due to drought, leaving none of its kind, and populations of lizard species have been wiped out due to cyclones in the Bahamas."

Cyclones were the most common extreme event for birds, fish, plants and reptiles, while mammals and amphibians were most responsive to drought events, with drought leading to 12 cases of major population decline in mammals.Drought also led to 13 cases of breeding declines in bird populations and 12 cases of changes in the composition of invertebrate communities.

UQ Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science director Professor James Watson said the detailed information would help inform ecosystem management.

“The research clearly shows species will respond, often negatively, to extreme events,” Professor Watson said.“As climate change continues to ensure extreme climate and weather events are more and more common,we now need to act to ensure species have the best chance to survive.Wherever possible, high quality and intact habitat areas should be retained, as these are the places where species are most resilient(易恢复的) to increasing exposure to extreme events.”

42. How was the UQ researchconducted?

A. By observing extreme weather events.

B. By protecting the endangered species.

C. By recording reactions of animals to extreme climate.

D. By analyzing the reason why mass animal death happened.

43. What does the underlined word “annihilated” in paragraph 4 probably mean?

A. destroyed

B. defeated

C. decreased

D. disappeared

44. Which of the following sentences is true about extreme weather events?

A. Drought caused 13 cases of distinctionin bird populations.

B. Drought caused 12 cases of population decline in mammals.

C. Birds and mammals are most responsive to cyclones.

D. Cyclones wiped out populations of lizard.

45. What can we infer from Professor Watson’s words?

A. Animals often show negative responses to extreme events.

B. The existing management ways for wildlife protection are limited.

C. Different methods should be adopted to ensure the survival of different species.

D. Complete and undamaged habitats are of great importance to species’ survival.

Dear friends,

In recent years, many of us spend a lot of time on the Internet with its popularity. As a result, we don’t write as well as we did in the past. In order to protect our Chinese characters and improve our handwriting, we’d like to offer some suggestions:

We should spend less time online so that we can have more time to read books. We’d better form the habit of keeping diaries every day to practice handwriting. Besides, it is better to write letters to our relatives and friends by hand rather than send e-mails. As the saying goes, “The style is the man.” Beautiful and ne at handwriting is beneficial to us students. So please pay more attention to our handwriting in the future.

Let’s take action now!

On days when the air is so bad that they close the school, we stay home and help Mama put wet sheets over the windows. But the dirt always finds a way in. Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After lunch, Papa headed out to the field to check on the cattle while I played with Faye in the yard. The temperature suddenly dropped. I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust. All the birds flew away. “I must warn Papa,” I thought to myself. To avoid her panicking, I gently told Faye to go back inside where she would be safe, and then headed off to the field.

Kids' imaginations are in overdrive when it comes to composing Christmas lists - as they ask for a live walrus(海象), the power of invisibility(隐身) and Taylor Swift. Christmas is less than two months away, and little ones are already planning their letters to Santa. But one survey has revealed the weirdest items to turn up on Christmas lists, and they include mythical monsters and mega-selling pop stars. Conducted by GAME, the study also reveals a significant break from festive tradition when it comes to writing wish lists. One in three, 29%, children now use technology such as iPads or mobile phones instead of the traditional pen and paper, while a further one in five (19%) will rely on parents to take note of all the things they point at during TV adverts and during trips to the shops. With more than three million lists likely to be drafted, parents are prepared for a flurry of requests including many that even Santa would struggle to achieve. As part of the study, parents were asked to reveal some of the weird and wonderful items that made it onto their child's Christmas lists. Fred Prego, marketing director at GAME, says: "Choosing what to get your kids at Christmas can be a bit of a minefield(雷区).” As the research shows, most kids will be making note of the things that they want this half term and a lot of lists are going to be written." 21.
