Passage 1

Anthropology is the study of human beings as creatures of society. It fastens its attention upon those physical and industrial techniques, those conventions and values, which distinguish one community from all others that belong to different tradition.

The distinguishing mark of anthropology among the social sciences is that it includes for serious study other societies than our own. For its purposes any social

101英语共15页第3页

regulation of mating and reproduction is as significant as our own, though it may be that of the Sea Dyaks, and have no possible historical relation to that of our civilization. To the anthropologists, our customs and those of New Guinea tribe are two possible social schemes for dealing with common problems, and in so far as he remains an anthropologist he is bound to avoid any weighting of one in favor of the other. He is interested in human behavior, not as it is shaped by one tradition, our own, but as it has been shaped by any tradition whatsoever. He is interested in a wide range of custom that is found in various cultures, and his objective is to understand the way in which these cultures change and differentiate, the different forms through which they express themselves and the manner in which the customs of any peoples function in the lives of the individuals.

Now custom has not been commonly regarded as a subject of any great moment. The inner workings of our own brains we feel to be uniquely worthy of investigation, but custom, we have a way of thinking, is behavior at its most commonplace. As a matter of fact, it is the other way round. Traditional custom is a mass of detailed behavior more astonishing than what any one person can ever evolve in individual actions. Yet that is a rather trivial aspect of the matter. The fact of first-rate importance is the predominant role that custom plays in experience and belief, and the very great varieties it may manifest.

31. According to the passage, we can say that anthropology _________.

A) can deal with human beings as one group of the creatures in the living world

B) can reveal an enormous diversity of traditions

C) can provide insights into the relationship between human beings and nature

D) can distinguish the human race from other creatures

32. For serious study, an anthropologist _________.

A) must not study his own culture

B) is not supposed to have a prejudice against any society

C) should focus on those societies which are historically related to each other

D) is obliged to work only on those societies that have no historical relationship to

each other

33. In the third paragraph, the author is trying _________.

A) to be critical of custom

B) to say that anthropology is more important than psychology

C) to strengthen the role custom plays in experience and belief

D) to draw our intention to the importance of custom

34. Which of the following does the author most probably agree with?

101英语共15页第4页

A) The goal of the anthropologist is to understand the way in which people express

themselves.

B) The anthropologist tries to understand why cultures are carried on without any

change.

C) The anthropologist's professional interest is as wide as the variety of customs.

D) The anthropologist is to explore social relations of different people.

35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A)Human Behavior.

B)Creature of Society.

C)The Science of Custom.

D) The Functions of Cultures.

Passage 2

Proper arrangement of classroom space is important to encouraging interaction. Most of us have noticed how important physical setting is to efficiency and comfort in our work.

Today's corporations hire human engineering specialists and spend a considerable amount of time and money to make sure that the physical environment of buildings are fit for the activities of their inhabitants.

Similarly, college classroom space should be designed to encourage the activity of critical thinking. We are already in the twenty-first century, but step into almost any college classroom and you step back in time at least a hundred years. Desks are normally in straight rows, so students can clearly see teacher but not all their classmates. The assumption behind such an arrangement is obvious: Everything of importance comes from the teacher.

With a little imagination and effort, unless desks are fixed to the floor, the teacher can correct the situation and create space that encourages interchange among students. In small and standard classes, chairs, desks and tables can be arranged in a variety of ways: circles, U-shapes, or semicircles. The primary goal should be for everyone to be able to see everyone else. Larger classes particularly those held in lecture halls, unfortunately, allow much less flexibility.

Arrangement of classroom should also make it easy to divide students into small groups for discussion or problem-solving exercises. Small classes with movable desks and tables present no problem. Even in large lecture halls it is possible for students to turn around and form groups of four to six. Breaking a class into small groups provide more opportunities for students to interact with each other, think out loud, and see how other students thinking processes operate —all essential elements in developing new

101英语共15页第5页

modes of critical thinking.

In courses that regularly use a small group format, students might be asked to stay in the same small groups throughout the course. A colleague of mine allows students to move around during the first two weeks, until they find a group they are comfortable with. He then asks them to stay in the same seat, with the same group, from that time on. This not only creates a comfortable setting for interaction but helps him learn students' names and faces.

36. Desk arrangement in a traditional classroom is associated with the idea that ______.

A) students should not be active learners in the classroom

B) it is useless for students to participate in class activity

C) the teacher is the chief knowledge source

D) it is important for students to see the blackboard clearly

37. The expression "step back in time at least a hundred years" (in Paragraph 2) is

intended to convey the idea that ________.

A) college classrooms often remind you of your college life

B) critical thinking was encouraged even a century ago

C) a hundred years ago, desk arrangement in a classroom was quite different

D) there is not much change in the college educational ideas over the past hundred

years

38. The primary purpose of desk arrangement is _______.

A) for the teacher to divide students into small groups

B) to make it possible for the students to interact with each other

C) for the teacher to find out how students think

D) to give students opportunities to practice speaking

39. The greatest advantage in allowing each student to find his own group might be that

_________.

A) the teacher saves the trouble in doing that

B) learning is made comfortable in this way

C) the teacher can easily remember the students' names and faces

D) brighter students can help the slower ones

40. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A) New kinds of desks and chairs should be made.

B) Many companies are trying to improve the working settings for their employees.

C) Interaction between students is essential in the training of critical thinking.

D) A comfortable environment leads to higher working efficiency.

Passage 3

The human gene sequence will allow researchers to make rapid progress in understanding the relationship between genes and behavior. The finding that we have far fewer genes than expected suggests that environmental influences play a greater role in our development than was previously thought.

Understanding how a relatively small number of genes translated into the incredible complexity of a human being will be one of the challenges of the future. "We now have the list of parts of the human boy," said Mr. John Sulston, who spearheaded UK efforts to crack the human code. "Now we have to find out what the parts are, we have to find out how all the parts interact and we have to probably do very sophisticated things to understand how the control of those interactions goes forward to actually build our bodies."

Researchers are predicting the data will unlock some of the secretes of how genes influence behavior. But the warn against headline making claims that given genes can be the case of crime, homosexuality or even sporting brilliance. Dr Craig Venter, the leader of private effort to decode the human genome, said genetic determinism, the idea that a person is controlled by his genes was a fallacy. "There are two fallacies to be avoided," Dr Venter's team writes in the journal Science. "Determinism, the idea that all characteristics of a person are 'hard-wired' by the genome and reductionism, that now the human sequence is completely known, it is just a matter of time before our understanding of gene functions and interactions will provide a complete causal description of human variability.

One implication of the work, said Dr Venter, was to calm fears about human cloning. Trying to clone a person to gain immorality would be pointless venture, he said. Dr, Venter said, "This whole debate about the cloning is much ado about nothing because while you may be able to, as with twins, have someone who looks similar to you, the chances of them having the same personality and the same outcome in life is close to zero. That's why you cannot have Xerox copies of people; you cannot have clones of people that will be the same."

One area where the study of genes is expected to have an impact is identifying mental disorders with genetic roots, perhaps reducing the stigma of conditions such as depression or schizophrenia. Researchers are also closing in on stretches of genetic code that may make an individual more vulnerable to developing drug or alcohol addiction. 41. Following the finding that we have fewer genes, further research may be conducted

into _________.

behavior

101英语共15页第7页

B) why environmental influence plays a greater role in our growth

Passage 4

The word “science” is heard so often in modern times that almost everybody has some notion of its meaning. On the other hand, its definition is difficult for many people. The meaning of the term is confused, but everyone should understand its meaning and objectives. Just to make the explanation as simple as possible, suppose science is defined as classified knowledge (facts).

Even in the true science distinguishing facts from fiction is not always easy. For this reason great care should be taken to distinguish between beliefs and truths. There is no danger so long as a clear difference is made between temporary and proved explanations. For example, hypotheses are attempts to explain natural phenomena. From these positions the scientists continue to experiment and observe until they are proved

101英语共15页第8页

or discredited. The exact status of any explanation should be clearly labeled to avoid confusion.

The objectives of science are primarily the discovery and the subsequent understanding of the unknown. Man cannot be satisfied with recognizing that secrets exist in nature or that questions are unanswerable; he must solve them. Toward that end specialists in the field of biology and related fields of interest are directing much of their time and energy.

Actually, two basic approaches lead to the discovery of new information. One, aimed at satisfying curiosity, is referred to as pure science. The other is aimed at using knowledge for specific purposes — for instance, improving health, raising standards of living, or creating new consumer products. In this case knowledge is put in economic use. Such an approach is referred to as applied science.

Sometimes practical-minded people miss the point of pure science in thinking only of its immediate application for economic rewards. Chemists responsible for many of the discoveries could hardly have anticipated that their findings would one day result in applications of such a practical nature as those directly related to life and death. The discoveries of one bit of information opens the door to the discovery of another. Some discoveries seem so simple that one is amazed they were not made years ago, however, one should remember that the construction of the microscope had to precede the discovery of cell. The host of scientists devoting their lives to pure science are not apologetic about ignoring the practical side of their discoveries; they know from experience that most knowledge is eventually applied.

46. To define science we may simply call it _________.

A)the study of unrelated subjects

B)an attempt to explain natural phenomena

C)the study of unrelated fields

D)classified knowledge

47. Pure science, leading to the construction of a microscope, _________.

A)may lead to antiscientific, “impure” results

B)necessarily precedes applied science, leading to the discovery of a cell

C)is not always as pure as we suppose

D)necessarily results from applied science and the discovery of a cell

48. A scientist interested in adding to our knowledge about oxygen would probably call

his approach __________.

A)applied science

101英语共15页第9页

B) agriculture science

C) pure science

D) environmental science

49. Which of the following statements does the author imply?

A)Scientists engaged in theoretical research should not be blamed for ignoring the

practical side of their discoveries.

B)Today few people have any notions of the meaning of science.

C)In science, it is not difficult to distinguish fact from fiction.

D)Practical-minded people can understand the meaning and objectives of pure

science.

50. The best title for the passage is ________.

A)The Nature of Science and Scientists

B)Biology and the Scientific Age

C)Hypotheses and Theories

D)On Distinguishing Facts from Fictions

Passage 5

As the climate in the Middle East changed beginning around 7000 B. C., conditions emerged that led to a more complex and advanced from of civilization in both Egypt and of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Mesopotamia became drier, producing river-side lands that were both habitable and fertile, and attracting settlers armed with the newly developed technique of agriculture. This migration was further encouraged by the gradual transformation of the once-hospitable grasslands of these regions into deserts. Human population became increasingly concentrated into pockets of settlement scattered along the banks of the great rivers.

The rivers profoundly shaped the way of life along their banks. In Mesopotamia, the management of water in conditions of unpredictable drought, flood, and storm became the central economic and social challenge. Villagers began early to build simple earthworks, dikes, canals, and ditches to control the waters and reduce the opposing dangers of drought during the dry season (usually the spring) and flooding at the harvest time.

Such efforts required a degree of cooperation among a large number of people that had not previously existed. The individual village, containing only a dozen or so houses and families, was economically vulnerable; but when several villages, probably under the directions of a council of elders, learned to share their human resources in the building of coordinated network of water-control systems, the safety, stability, and

101英语共15页第10页

prosperity of all improved. In this new cooperation, the seeds of the great Mesopotamian civilizations were being sown.

Technological and mathematical invention, too, were stimulated by life along the rivers. New devices were first developed here for use in irrigation systems. Similarly, the earliest methods of measurement and computation and the first developments in geometry were stimulated by the need to keep track of land holdings and boundaries in fields that were periodically inundated.

The rivers served as high roads of earliest commerce. Traders used boats made of bundles of rushes to transport grains, fruits, fibers, and textiles from one village to another, transforming the rivers into the central spines of nascent commercial kingdoms. Trade expanded surprisingly widely; we have evidence suggesting that, even before the establishment of the first Egyptian dynasty, goods were being exchanged between villagers in Egypt and others as far as Iran.

Similar developments were occurring at much the same time along the great river valleys in other parts of the world — for example, along the Indus in India and Hwang Ho in China. The history of early civilization has been shaped to a remarkable degree by the relationship of humans and rivers.

51. The primary purpose of the passage is to explain _________.

A)how climatic changes led to the founding of the earliest recorded cities

B)the influence of river life on the growth of early civilizations

C)some of the recent findings of researchers into early human history

D)the similarities and differences among several ancient societies

Mesopotamia have?

A)It led to warfare over water rights among rival villages.

B)It encouraged cooperation in the creation of water management systems.

C)It drove farmers to settle in fertile grasslands far from the uncontrollable rivers.

D)It had the actual effect of increasing the population there.

53. The earliest geometers were supported primarily by _______.

A) mechanical artisans B) traders and merchants

C) farm laborers D) land owners

54. It can be inferred from the passage that the emergence of complex civilizations in

A)the importance of water transportation in the growth of early trade

B)the relatively advanced position enjoyed by the Middle East spread to other

places

C)the rapidity with which social systems developed in the Middle East spread to

other places

D)the crucial role played by rivers in the development of human cultures around

III. Cloze (0.5X20)

Directions: There are 20 blanks in the following passage. For each blank you should find out ONE word that best fits the passage. Write the words on the Answer Sheet.

Memory is undoubtedly one of the most important human facilities. ___56____ it there would be no learning from experience, no intellectual functioning, no 57_ of language, nor any of the qualities that are generally ___58 with being human. Yet, with the possible exception of consciousness itself, memory ___59 the most mysterious of the mind’s __60_. Despite the fact that more research has been ___61_ to the study of memory than to any other mental function, comparatively ___62 is known about how the mind remembers things, and why it also appears to ___63 .

Memory is often thought of ___64 the ability to recall past events. ___65 someone were asked to remember what he ate for lunch yesterday, he would probably be able to give a brief ___66 , and if we were to __67 back with what he had ___68 eaten, it would be possible to see how well he had “remembered” it. Memory, __69__, is more than just the ability to recall. If the ___70 person were asked what he ate for lunch a year ago, he would probably be very __71 to recall it. Yet if we could ___72__ him of what he actually ate, he might well say, “Ah yes, now I remember.”He would ___73__ the items and still could be said to have retained ___74__ memory of the event. Thus, retention does not ___75__ imply recall.

IV. Translation (10%)

Direction:Translate the underlined sentences in the following passage into Chinese. Write your translation on the Answer Sheet.

The necessary urban development of our cities must be compatible with the conservation of the Cultural and Historical Patrimony. This is particularly true in the

101英语共15页第12页

case of those cities, numerous in the Iberian Peninsula and Europe, that are the result of a long historical tradition, often uninterrupted during almost two thousand years. 76) The preservation of the Archaeological Patrimony in these cities, however, comes up against conflicts difficult to resolve, with very differing and opposed positions: the demand and the price of the ground, the harmonious development of the city, the presence of infrastructures and services, the aspiration of the citizens to worthy housing, the business projects of the promoters or the working plans of the constructors.

The common resource established to solve these conflicts is Urban Planning. 77) Archaeology must take part actively in the elaboration of this planning, and use its abilities positively to prevent archaeological problems and look for an acceptable solution from the point of view of the protection of the Archaeological Patrimony with regard to urban development. 78) Lamentably, archaeology frequently ignores the possibilities of this course of action and does not have the resources necessary to use the urban standard and the planning figures as other methodological instruments (alongside those traditionally used archaeology) to solve the archaeological impact of urban development.

79) Given that the planning figures are the most efficient way of regulating the ground plan and classify and organize the territory, they are also a useful instrument for organizing an action of urban Archaeological Patrimony within the plan. This outlining must extend from the element under protection towards its surroundings, and must seek the conservation of that space, as well as guarantee the control of the agents or activities that may act negatively upon them. 80) The adequate organization of these spaces needs not only to apply the existing ground legislation, but also develop in each particular case (whether a city or a superior organizing community) a defined regulation. This regulation, adapted to the specification of the elements and surroundings to be protected, provides an adequate organization of the spaces that, due to their own historical values and potential social function, thus require it. To achieve this, it will be necessary to not only limit their use, but also to establish solutions for their management and, even, for their socio-cultural use.

V. Writing (15X1)

Directions:Choose ONE of the three topics and write a composition of no fewer than 200 words on the Answer Sheet.

电子科技大学成都学院微机原理复习题

一:填空题 ●CPU主动,处设被动的接口方式为(查询控制方式) ●在查询传送方式下,CPU与外设传送数据信息前必顺先查询(状态)。 ●8086CPU中的4个段寄存器分别是(CS )、(DS )、ES和SS。 ●串寻址中,为实现字节串的传送,是使用(SI )指向源串的。 ●逻辑地址由(段首)地址和(段内偏移)地址构成。 ●堆栈操作应满足(前进后出)的原则。 ●8086标志寄存器中,IF标志位的作用是(中断允许) ●计算机中的总线包括(地址总线)、(数据总线)和(控制总线)。 ●I nte l8086系统将中断分为外部中断和(内部中断)两大类 ●CPU完成一次存储器访问需要( 1 )个基本总线周期 ●指令CLC的功能是CF =(0 ) ●广播通信方式为单工方式,而手机通信方式为(全双工) 二:名词解释 1.堆栈 用于数据存储的一段特殊结构内存,存储数据满足后进先出的原则,数据入出栈操作均针对由SP指向的栈顶进行。 2.字长 决定微处理器与外部存储器、输入/输出部件之间一次交换的二进制数据位数,即数据总线的宽度。 3.中断 CPU在执行正常程序时,为处理一些紧急发生的情况,暂时中止当前程序,转而对该紧急事件进行处理,并在处理完后返回正常程序的过程 4. I/O接口,I/O端口。 I/O接口是把微处理器同外围设备(简称外设)连接起来实现数据传送的控制电路,一般由通用或专用芯片构成;I/O端口是I/O接口中信息传送的通道,通过端口地址访问;一般情况下一个I/O接口含有多个I/O端口。 三:简答题 1.什么是统一编址? 有何特点? 统一编址:存储器单元地址和I/O端口地址在同一个地址空间中分配。由于I/O 端口地址占用存储器单元地址,减少了存储器的寻址空间,访问存储器单元和I/O 端口可用相同的指令;
