After that, we went on down the river. It was very dark that night and it

wasn?t easy to see where we were going. Suddenly, a big steamboat came at

us very fast, and the next minute it was right over us. Jim and I jumped off

the raft (木筏) into the water. The boat hit the raft and went on up the river.

When I came up out of the water, I couldn?t see Jim anywhere. I called out his name again and again, but there was no answer. “He?s dead!”I thought. Slowly, I swam to the side of the river and got out. I saw that I was near a big old wooden house. Suddenly a lot of very angry dogs jumped out at me. They made a terrible noise and someone called from the house, “Who?s there?”

“George Jackson,” I answered quickly. “I?ve fallen off a river boat.”

Well, the people who lived in that house were very kind, and they took me in and gave me some new clothes and a good meal. I told them that my family were all dead, so they said I could stay with them as long as I wanted. It was a beautiful house and the food was good there, so I stayed.

A few days later one of the slaves in the house came to me and said, “Come with me!”Together, we went down to some trees by the river. “In there!” he said and went away.

On the ground, I found a man, asleep. It was Jim! I was really pleased to see him. When the steamboat hit the raft, Jim told me, the raft didn?t break up. Jim swam after it and caught it. Then he began to look for me.

In today?s world we are always surrounded (包围) by technology.

It?s true to say that technology makes our lives easier. However,

increasingly scientists are saying that we need to give ourselves a

break—otherwise we put ourselves at risk of developing hundreds of

health problems. Over the summer the days are longer, sunnier and free from school. With all this free time, why not put it to good use and do something that has nothing to do with technology?

To start with, you could learn a new skill. There are hundreds of possibilities: cooking, learning a musical instrument or a new sport. Maybe you?ve always wanted to try out that recipe (食谱), but haven?t had time? Perhaps you like learning how to knit, so you can have a new sweater for the autumn. You could use your free time to learn something new—and perhaps it?ll lead to an exciting chance in the future.

If you just fancy relaxing, why not go to a beach? Take along your favourite book and relax on the sand, or go for a stroll along the coastline. If you don?t live near a beach, you could go to your local park. Why not take along a picnic, or try and know about some of the local wildlife?

Little things, like challenging yourself to complete a crossword or a Sudoku, are a great place to start. You could even get involved in the latest craze: adult colouring books! Colouring is surprisingly therapeutic (治疗的), and it can be a nice way to get away from the stress of modern life!

You might surprise yourself and find a hidden talent within you; you might make new friends along the way. Next time you find yourself aimlessly channel-changing, have a think at what else you could spend your time doing.

31. What might you write in your diary if you do as the writer tells you?

A. I read an e-book. It was exciting!

B. I learnt to play the guitar. It was fun!

C. I had my website online. It was amazing!

D. I watched a TV programme. It was interesting!

32. Reading adult colouring books is a good way to .

A. learn a new skill

B. make new friends

C. feel less stressed

D. challenge ourselves

33. Which of the following explains the word “fancy” in Paragraph 3?

A. to want sth or want to do sth

B. to think that you are very popular

C. to like the idea of being sth or to believe

D. to think that sb will win or be successful at sth

34. You can put the sentence “Whatever you choose to do with your summer, try something

new!” at the beginning of .

A. Para 2

B. Para 3

C. Para 4

D. Para 5

35. What?s probably the title of the passage?

A. Ways of trying something new

B. Finding a hidden talent

C. Taking a break from technology

D. A better life with technology

Language changes all the time. New words and phrases appear and

develop. The words and pronunciations used by young people in the UK

can be very different to those used by adults. Living in a multicultural (多

元文化的) society has an effect on language, especially on young people,

whose friends are often from a mix of backgrounds. TV and music also

have big influence on the language of the young. Often UK singers sing in American accents (口音) without realizing.

Young British people use lots of language that you usually can?t find in most dictionaries. These informal words and expressions are known as …slang?. It is not possible to make a complete list of modern British slang. By the time the list was finished, it would be out of date! New words come and go like fashions. However, here are a few examples:

Safe, sorted, sound, cool or wicked all mean “That?s good” or“I understand”.

Instead of using different tag quest ions like …isn?t it?, can?t you? or don?t they?, people use innit.

Instead of saying very, really or completely, people use well.

Whatever means I don?t care.

…He?s fine’or …He?s fit’both mean …He?s good-looking?. Fine and fit can describe a boy or a girl.

Not everybody uses slang and not everybody likes it. A school in Sheffield, in the north of England, recently stopped its pupils using slang words such as hiya (hello), cheers and ta (both mean thank you). The head teacher says that if young people learn to speak …correctly? this will help them get a place at university and a good job.

When British people use language like this, it?s no surprise that some students say they can?t understand native(本土的) speakers. But perhaps learners don?t need to wo rry about communicating with native speakers so much. Research shows that most of the English spoken in the world today is spoken between non-native speakers of the language. In fact, when we think about “International English”, there is no such thing as a native or non-native speaker.

36. In the UK, you can find little slang in .

A. pop songs

B. TV programmes

C. most dictionaries

D. young people?s language

37. The writer uses the example of a school in Sheffield to support that .

A. slang is out of date

B. slang is changing quickly

C. slang words can be used easily

D. some people don?t like slang

38. Which slang can be used in the following dialogue?

—But the teacher says we can’t leave until we’ve finished.

—. I’m going.

A. Sound

B. Fine

C. Cheers

D. Whatever

39. If you want to learn more about the subject of the passage, you can search the Internet

with the key words “”.

A. British people

B. English slang

C. language changes

D. English cultures

40. This passage would most likely be found in a book of .

A. novel

B. culture

C. travel

D. history

Have you ever eaten something that you grew in your own garden? Many people have not had the pleasure of this experience. Alice Waters, the owner of Chez Panisse Restaurant, set out to change all that for a special group of students at Martin Luther King Junior Middle

School in Berkeley, California.

Waters worked with the school?s principal (校长), Neil Smith, to create a cooking and gardening programme at the school. Waters believes in the importance of people knowing where their food comes from. She also believes that there is a strong relationship between food, health, and the environment. She wanted to show children the pleasure in gardening and in preparing the foods that they grew. She wanted to teach them that a healthy body and a healthy environment go hand in hand.

The project that Waters began took a lot of time and patience. Teachers, students, and community volunteers helped her turn a parking area into a garden. At the same time, renovation (整修) was begun to turn an old cafeteria (自助餐厅) into a kitchen where students could prepare foods and share meals with their teachers.

In 1995, the first crops were planted. Every year since then, new crops are evaluated (评价) to make sure that they are best suited for the environment and the needs of the school.

Students have found that they look forward to the time they spend in the garden each week. They have learnt how to grow and harvest. They have learnt about the life cycles of various plants.

Alice Waters dreams that one day there will be a garden in every school in the United States. She hopes that school lunches can be prepared using the produce from the gardens.
