The idea of inventing an international language is not a new one. Over the past 180 years, linguists (语言学家) have created over ten different languages that are based on German, Spanish, and English. One of these was Basic English.

By 1923 the First World War had been over for five years, but Europe was still recovering from its effects. Charles Kay Ogden, a linguist and writer, was running several bookshops in Cambridge. He published The Meaning

of Meaning (1923), a book describing how we use language. The book received high praise, which drove Ogden to design an international language — something that was much simpler than English. In 1930 Ogden’s book Basic English: A General Introduction with Rules and Grammar was published.

Perhaps it takes about seven years for one to become a good English speaker. Ogden believed that Basic English could be learned in seven weeks. There were only 850 words and the grammar was very simple.

The language attracted the attention of cators all over the world, but its development was stopped by the Second World War. After the war, both the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the President of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt looked for ideas that might bring world peace. They both gave speeches that encouraged the use of Ogden’s international language. In the past 60 years, the language has had some success. In some parts of East Asia, teachers are still using Ogden’s word lists.

However, in the main, the language has disappeared. Because there are many more non-native than native speakers of English, recently some linguists have asked whether we should give careful consideration to Ogden’s ideas again. And the Wikipedia website (21世纪教育网https://www.doczj.com/doc/d89552074.html,) has started a version (版本) written in Basic English for non-native learners of the language. Search for it on the Internet now!

Since 1984 ,Philadelphia has been cleaning up its act. One by one,graffiti-covered walls are being changed into outdoor art. So far, more than 1,800 murals (壁画) have been painted. Philadelphia now has more murals than any other American city.

The walls that were once ugly with graffiti (涂鸦) are now covered with beautiful pictures of historical heroes and modern art, thanks to the Mural Arts Program (MAP). Its work makes schools and public places attractive, and its citizens very proud. The program began as part of Philadelphia's Anti-Graffiti Network. Jane Golden is the MAP's artistic director. “When people ask me what our program is about, ”she says,“I answer them with one word: hope.” Each year, the MAP offers youth art programs and workshops. Some one-time graffiti writers even help paint MAP murals.

The MAP's work, says Golden, is all about developing a sense of community (社区). When a neighborhood requests a mural, the MAP works with the people there to develop a message. Some messages have been “Safe Streets,”“Love and Care, ”and “Peace Walk.”

The MAP receives up to 50 requests for murals each week. Last year, the workers painted 140 murals.

“The making of a mural enters people's collective memory as an extraordinary, pleasant moment in neighborhood history,”says Golden, who began as a muralist in Los Angeles.

Howling is a behaviour commonly observed among a wolf pack.As pack animals, wolves work together to hunt and rely on howling as an important means of communication among each other. There are different explanations of a wolf's howl and it appears that there may be more to discover.

One theory is that wolves howl to bond better together. It's almost as if howling together helps the pack stay together.Perhaps something similar to people feeling a sense of involvement with each other when singing a song together. But this theory may be wrong, explains Fred H.Harrington,a professor who studies wolf behaviour.

Indeed, there have been times when wolves have been seen one moment howling in a chorus, and the next, quarreling among each other. It appears that usually the lowest-ranking members of the pack may actually be “punished” for joining in the chorus at times. So is howling a way to strengthen a social bond or just a way to reconfirm status among its members? —Why do wolves howl for sure?

What is clear, however,is that howling is often used among packmates to locate each other.Hunting grounds are distant and it happens that wolves may separate from one another at times. When this happens, howling

appears to be an excellent means of gathering.

Howling, interestingly,is a contagious behaviour. When one wolf starts to howl, very likely others will follow. This is often seen to occur in the morning,as if wolves were doing some sort of “roll call”where wolves all howl together to report their presence.

5.What is the possible similarity between wolves' howling together and humans' singing in chorus?

A.The act of calling each other. B.The sense of accomplishment. C.The act of hunting for something. D.The sense of belonging to a group.

6.Why does Harrington think the“social bond”theory may be wrong? A.Wolves separate from each other after howling.

B.Wolves tend to protect their hunting grounds.

C.Wolves sometimes have quarrels after howling together. D.Wolves of low rank are encouraged to join in the chorus.

根据第三段中提到的“and the next, quarrelling among each other”以及“it appears that...be punished for joining...”

7.Researchers are sure that wolves often howl to________.

A.show their ranks B.find their companions C.report the missing ones D.express their loneliness

根据倒数第二段中的第一句话的信息词“locate each other”以及最后一句中的“appears to be an excellent means of gathering”都可以明确:狼的嚎叫正是为了找伴儿,故选项B的说法是最符合原文的。

8.“Howlin g...is a contagious behaviour”(in the last

paragraph)means________.

A.howling is a signal for hunting B.howling is a way of communication

C.howling often occurs in the morning D.howling spreads from one to another

City trees grow faster and die younger than trees in rural forestry, a new study finds. Over their lifetimes, then, urban trees will likely absorb less CO2 from the air thah forest trees. As we all know, the earth would be freezing or burning hot without CO2. However, CO2is a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps energy from the sun as/heat. That makes temperatures near the ground rise. Human activities, especially the widespread burning-of fossil(化石)fuels, have been sending extra greenhouse gases into the air. This has led to a rise in average temperatures across the globe. Studies had shown forests readily absorb CO2, but there hadn't been much data on whether city trees grow, die and absorb CO2at the same rate as forest trees do. So some researchers decided to find out. To figure out how quickly trees were growing, researchers tracked their diameters (the width of their trunks) between 2005 and 2014. A tree's diameter increases as it grows, just as a person's waist size increases as they gain weight. About half the weight of a tree is carbon, research has shown. Most of the rest is water. Over the nine years' tracking, the researchers found city trees absorbed four times as much carbon from the air as forest trees. However, they were twice as likely to die. So over the lifetime of each type of tree, forest trees actually absorbed more CO2. City trees grew faster because they had less competition for light from their neighbors. In a forest, trees tend to grow close together, shading their neighbors. Street trees also benefit from higher levels of nitrogen (氮)in rainwater. Nitrogen helps plants grow. Waste gases from gas-burning cars also contain nitrogen, thus enriching city air with nitrogen. Later, rainwater may wash much of it to the ground. Some street trees may also have better access to water than trees in the country because the underground water pipes can leak. (1)What can he known about CO2 from paragraph 2? A. It is one of the side effects of greenhouses. B. It greatly accelerates the process of global warming. C. It results from the widespread burning of fossil fuels. D. It prevents the earth from becoming unsuitable to live on. (2)Why did researchers track the diameters of trees? A. To know about their growth rates. B. To find out how much they weigh. C. To check whether they were healthy. D. To assess the carbon amounts in them. (3)What advantage do city trees have over forest trees? A. They are more likely to access growth promoters. B. They can enjoy more water coming from the air. C. They can enjoy more shade from neighbors. D. They are better at competing for light. (4)What will probably be talked about if the passage is continued? A. How urban trees can live longer. B. Why city living makes trees die young. C. How trees respond to dry soil conditions. D. Why faster-growing trees absorb more CO2.

Imagine waking up one day and finding that your beautiful local beach is no more—gone, its fine white sand swept away by an abnormal storm. You go about your daily business for 12 long years and then suddenly the beach is back, all its glory restored by another storm. This is what happened on the island of Achill, off the coast of Ireland, where people are celebrating the return of the beautiful Ashleam Bay beach that was taken from them in 2005. That in itself is unusual enough, but the story gets even better! You see, another beach in Achill did a disappearing act once, but took much longer to return. The beach at Doonagh, located only six miles away from Ashleam Bay, was restored earlier in 2016 after waves created by spring storms had swept away all the sand in 1984, leaving just rock pools behind. There is local legend that stretches back hundreds of years that says this beach at Ashlcam Bay returns for a short every seven years then disappears again. But this time around it took a bit longer than that. It was last seen in 2005 and it stayed for a few months at that time before it was washed away again. As you can imagine, everyone on the island of Achill is thrilled to have their sandy beach back, and even though no one knows how long it's going to be around for, they are making the most of the time they've got before it disappears again. Some may be quick to believe climate changes cause the phenomenon, but that's not the reason these two beaches in Achill keep disappearing, Dr Kevin Lynch, a geographer at NUT Galway, says that these occurrences are the result of hydrodynamics (流体力学) and sediment(沉积物) supply, rather than climate changes. Regardless of what's causing them, disappearing and reappearing beaches are just part of what makes nature so fascinating. (1)What is people's reaction to the return of the Ashleam Bay beach? A. Full of fear. B. Quite delighted. C. Very disappointed. D. Extremely con fused.(2)What can we learn about the beach at Doonagh? A. It is not located in Ireland. B. It disappeared 12 years ago. C. It once disappeared for more than 30 years. D. It is just made up of rocks and pools. (3)According to the local legend, when should the Ashleam Bay beach have come back? A. In 1982. B. In 2012. C. In 2016. D. In 2018. (4)What does Dr Kevin Lynch think of the phenomenon? A. Some abnormal storms lead to ocean's enlargement, B. It is hard to uncover the mystery of beach's disappearing. C. Climate changes can result in beaches disappearing completely. D. Hydrodynamics and sediment supply cause two beaches to disappear. 【答案】(1)B (2)C (3)B
