You have been working hard to learn English. Do you know American kids are trying to learn Chinese? More than 60,000 American students now study Chinese.

“Because of China?s fast development, Chinese has become more useful, and more and more Americans begin to learn it,” said Scott McGinnis, a Washington language expert (专家).

For example, in 1999, only three schools in Chicago had Chinese lessons. This year more than 30 schools there have Chinese during school days. Last year China gave them 3,000 textbooks because they had done a good job.

Although Chinese is becoming more and more popular, it is one of the most difficult languages to learn. Usually, an English speaker takes about 1,320 hours to become good at Chinese. He needs only 480 hours for French, Spanish or Italian.

When you are learning a language, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very helpful. When you read, you can not only learn some new words, but also learn

how to use them. When you read a passage, it gives you a good example for writing.

Here are some good reading tips.

Firstly, try to read at the right level (水平). Read something that you can understand. If it is too hard for you, it is not interesting.

Secondly, try to understand the new words. If there are four or five new words on a page, don?t use a dictionary. Instead, try to guess their meanings as you read. Mark (作标记) them with a pencil. Then look them up in a dictionary when you finish reading, and write them in your own vocabulary book. Try to remember them.

Thirdly, try to read for a short time once a day. Fifteen minutes or half an hour every day is better than two hours every Sunday. For example, you can read before you go to bed, or after you get up or at lunchtime.

Lastly, read something that interests you. Choose a newspaper, a book or a magazine about a subject that you like. It will be easy enough for you to understand.

Dear Tommy,

I?m writing to you on your third birthday. I want to tell you something about your grandma?s time. I was born sixty-eight years ago in a small village.

Transportation used to be a big problem. When we traveled from village to village, we used to walk or ride horses.

Shopping was not an easy job, either. There were no supermarkets in the neighborhood. We used to grow most of our own food: rice and vegetables. We kept things cool in a special underground room.

The biggest difference is that you have electricity (电). We didn?t have electricity until very late in our small village. We didn?t have any televisions of course. We used to perform our local (地方的) music and enjoy it very much.

Life used to be very hard, but I was not upset. I would like you to know about the old days and be happy about what you have when you grow up. Remember, feeling good about life is the key to happiness.

Love,

Your grandma

My first day

I?ll never forget my first day at primary school. I remember I felt really nervous on that day. We were in assembly(集合), and the head teacher was introducing himself. Go and stand in the corner,” he said. I remember I felt so terrible at that time.

My first teacher

I remember her name was Mrs Simpson. She was really pretty and had a lovely smile. She had

a soft voice and always wore the same sweater. She seemed so nice after that horrible(可怕的) head teacher.

Sports day

The sports day was the best day of school! I used to practice for the five-kilometer race and one year I actually won!

My nickname (绰号)

Everyone in the class had a nickname. Some of the nicknames were funny and some weren?t very nice. There was a thin girl who everyone called “spider legs”. TORONTO —A new report from the Vanier Institute for the family says that there are more problem children today than 50 years ago.

York University professor Anne Ambert, the writer of the report, says that bad influences on children come from parents, schools, neighbors, the media (媒体), etc.

Children today have bad behavior. They argue more with others. They stop others when others are talking. They are less polite to others. They choose to fight rather than discuss when they disagree with each other. When they have disagreements with their parents, they want to run away from home. They tell more lies (谎话). When they need money, they would rather steal (偷) than work hard.

There is not enough family education about how kids behave well. Parents should care more about their kids. There are more and more single-parent families and more violence (暴力) on TV and in other kinds of media.

The report is a study about why there are more children with bad behavior. Everyone should pay more attention to this problem.

“Liu Qian made the coins pass through the glass just by patting th e glass table. Moreover (而且), he put his hand through the glass to get the coin,” said Li. “It?s really amazing.”

Some people unveiled(揭秘) Liu Qian?s magic in an online video. Some posted(公布) the secrets behind the magic show only 10 minutes after Liu Qian performed it on TV.

“It?s wrong! Showing how it?s done will ruin (破坏) the beauty of magic,” said Li.

Liu Heng, 14, from Jiangsu, agrees with Li. “Everyone knows magic is not real. Unveiling it will ruin the feeling of …unreal? and make it meaningless,” said Liu Heng. “So we?d better keep the magic of magic shows.”

Unlike these two, Wang Zi, a 14-year-old Beijinger, doesn?t think unveiling the secrets is all that bad. Wang is a magic lover and can do some simple magic shows. He watched four videos that showed the secrets behind Liu?s magic show. “Watching those can help us understand magic better,” said Wang.

Facing the unveiling, Liu Qian said in a recent interview, “Magic is an art to meet people?s curiosity (好奇心). So the best attitude (态度) towards magic is enjoying it rather than finding out

how it?s done.”
