阅读下面短文,然后用英语简洁回答文后所给的五个问题。The wind howled in off the sea. God, it was cold. We both looked under-dressed for the occasion. I stood before my grandfather’s grave, gathering some thick sticks to help support the basket Grandma had given me to place at the top of the headstone. I hadn’t told her that two of the legs had already fallen off while the basket sat in the trunk of my car. She didn’t seem to notice. I turned to look at her as I was looking for the sticks. She was on her knees, decorating the pine branches. I had never seen her on her knees. She was a stand-up type of girl, and the scene ___________ to me. It took me quite a while to try to fix the basket, but it didn’t seem to want to stand up at all. It was too late. She had always outthought me. Simply by breaking off the remaining two legs, the basket looked as good as new. I laughed to myself, partly for not thinking of that, and partly for thinking I could make the basket look good with my sticks. "The plaque (墓板)looks better now that it’s been out in the salt air a bit," she said more to herself than to me. I thought to myself that the more weathered the plaque became the more accepted she became about death. It didn’t shine anymore in the late afternoon sun and she relaxed about that fact.

It happened that a dog had got a bone and was carrying it home. He held the bone in his mouth, just wanting to eat it in peace. On his way home he had to cross a plank(厚木板) lying across a running river. As he crossed the plank, he looked down at the water, and saw his own reflection in the water beneath. Thinking it was another dog with another bone, he made up his mind to have that bone too. So he made a snap(咬) at the reflection in the water. However, as he opened his mouth, the bone dropped into the water, and disappeared. 附加题(共4小题;每小题2分,满分8分)After my first degree, I had a dream of doing research. I did well in university, but it was hard to find a PhD pro-gram in Italy. According to my professor, I was too young to start and should wait a few years until I had more experience. But I was 22, and this is the age when a student in England would start his PhD. I kept looking, and finally my searching took me to Scotland. It was the most unforgettable experience of my life.

At that time my English level was academic (学术的), and I was so terrified that I couldn’t understand what people were telling me. It was hard to be so far from home and in a country so different from mine.

I still remember the day when I arrived. I opened the door of my room and found "yellowish" walls. The only person there was a Japanese girl that hardly said "Hi". I waited for a long time, with my luggage still packed, till I realized I had no choice but to make that place mine, so I covered

the walls with beautiful things to look at! For the first six months I hardly spoke to people; I was so afraid, for everybody spoke English better than me. It was a bad start. I didn’t know how to establish a connection without looking intrusive (打扰的).

Luckily, I had many nice people around me, showing me how to make new friends; I became a good friend of my Japanese roommate as well! Above all, I learned how to express myself in English freely. Unfortunately, I was missing home so much that at last I decided to take a master’s degree and go back to my country. I will always blame myself for that.

书面表达:

One possible version:

You May Lose What You Have by Reaching for More Everybody has goals to reach, everybody has ambitions to do something better, and there are many chances to make those dreams come true in our society. However, when you miss your chance, or you have not made enough preparations and do it hurriedly, it is impossible to get the result you want. Furthermore, you are likely to lose things that you have already achieved. So when you have an idea or a plan to do something, you should think it over, consider everything, make good preparations, and then give it your best effort. Remember, look before you leap.

人教版高中英语选修6各单元课文原文

选修6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.

高中英语选修6 Unit 1 A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones. Starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages(5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artistof this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created a feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance(15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values gradually replaced those held in the Middle Ages. People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life.At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess their own paintings, so they coule decorate their superb palaces and great houses. If the rules of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new
