Nanotechnology is a fashionable word these days. The name “nano”(纳米) comes from the size of molecules, which are measured in nanometers—or one billionth of a meter. Through operating the atoms and molecules, scientists can change the nature of common materials and even create new materials that have new properties.

But scientists are concerned about its possible risks to our daily lives.

Clothing merchants claim their nano-cloth keeps our bodies warm er in winter, saving us from needing thick coats. Vitamin companies boast their nano-pills are easier to absorb. Home decoration companies suggest you use their nano-paint, which has no smell, is waterproof, and free from poisonous substances.

Nanomaterials are making our lives better, its creators say. The US National Science Foundation predicts nanotechnology research will grow into a US $-trillion industry over the next 10 years.

But relatively little is known about the potential health and environmental effects of the tiny particles. Just atoms wide, they are small enough to penetrate cells easily in lungs, brains and other organs. US best-seller “Prey”, written by Michael Crichton, paints a doomsday in which a group of tiny nanomachines escapes the lab and threatens to take control of humanity.

Studies have shown that some nanoparticles can be poisonous to animal cells. There are fears that exposure can cause breathing problems, since nanoparticles could be taken in through the nose, causing unknown problems to brain cells. Scientists also fear that nanoparticles placed on the skin could damage DNA. “No one knows, and that’s the problem,” said Pat Mooney, director of the ETC Group. “People are

rubbing them on the skin as sunscreens and as cosmetics.”

Moo ney’s group is calling for products such as sunscreen, that are directly absorbed into the body to be_taken_off_the_shelf until they’re proved safe. 36.What do you think is nanotechnology is?

A. It is a fashionable technology that operates the atoms and molecules.

B. It is a fashionable technology that can be used to create DNA.

C. It is a fashionable technology that is created by a scientist named Nano.

D. It is a fashionable technology that combines chemistry with physics. 37.What benefits can nanotechnology bring to us except________.

A. It can allow us to be free from thick coats by wearing clothes made of nano-cloth.

B. It can allow us to create more new materials to meet the need of our modern society.

C. It can help us to take control of the doomsday.

D. It can help us to decorate our homes more environmentally friendly. 38.Studies have made it clear that________.

A. exposure to nanoparticles can damage DNA

B. rubbing nano cosmetics on the skin can help control skin diseases

C. all nanoparticles can’t be poisonous to animal cells

D. the nanoparticles have bad effects on health and environment

39.What the underlined part “be taken off the shelf” in the last paragraph mean?

A. Mooney’s group recommends that consumers to buy nano products such as sunscreen on the shelf.

B. Mooney’s group suggests that nano products such as sunscreen win a great success on the shelf.

C. Mooney’s group suggests nano products such as sunscreen be sold on shelf instead of on the street.

D. Mooney’s group suggests nano products such as sunscreen be proved safe before they are sold.

My grandparents actively practiced simplicity. They both grew up in very large families and lived through the Great Depression. Saving for a rainy day and avoiding superfluous consumption were their life philosophy. Rather than seeking fulfillment through material items, they chose to spend really simple life together, with family and in nature.

Over the years my grandparents noticed dramatic changes in their community. Every year more farmland was destroyed to build larger and larger homes. As real estate prices rose, many of their neighbors sold their little homes and land. Soon theirs was the only small house on the block, surrounded by a sea of mansions. My grandparents built and lived in a small 600-square-foot cottage for most of their adult lives. Lots of family members encouraged my grandparents to expand their little old house. But they did n’t want a bigger one. They loved their little house and were content with what they had.

My grandparents avoided a consumptive (浪费的) lifestyle by painting and repairing the house themselves. They lived in a small home, but had a huge garden. They loved gardening and planting because it reduced their grocery bill, improved their health, and gave them an excuse to be outside. They also reused and recycled everything. For instance, they had driven the same car for over 15 years and didn't buy a new one until the old Chevrolet was worn out.

From my grandparents, I learned an important lesson: it is possible to live a simple and fulfilling life. My grandparents taught me that living a simple life isn't about self-deprivation. Instead,it's about giving yourself the time, freedom, and money to pursue your dreams.Becoming debt free, downsizing to a smaller home, and going car-lite(减少用车频率)are a few ways to take control of your life and start pursuing your dreams.

44.The community's changes include all the following EXCEPT that________.

A. people built more farmland

B. the neighbors sold their houses

C. the houses became more expensive

D. many mansions were built there

45.The author's grandparents didn't expand their house because________.

A. they didn't accept the family members' advice

B. their house was really new and large enough

C. they were satisfied with the house they lived in

D. they were too old to do any house-building job

46.Which of the following is a consumptive lifestyle in the author's grandparents' opinion?

A. Repairing the house themselves.

B. Planting vegetables in the garden.

C. Reusing and recycling things.

D. Changing cars in a short time.

47.The author thinks his grandparents' lifestyle is________.

A. unacceptable

B. approvable

C. unreasonable

D. understandable

D

Chicken soup has long been a comfort food for people with cold symptoms. Whether the remedy (疗法) comes from the warmth and comfort of the soup or from actual cold-fig hting ingredients(成分) in the meal, it is still up for debate.

Chicken Soup: Just the Evidence

Science_has_begun_to_support_what_mothers_have_understood_for_centuries. The heat, salt, and hydration provided by chicken soup may actually fight the cold virus. Laboratory studies have shown that ingredients of chicken soup with vegetables could kill viral cells and prevent the growth of new ones. The soup may also provide an anti-inflammatory (消炎的) effect that helps reduce cold symptoms. Unfortunately, the benefits of chicken soup appear to be limited by how quickly the soup leaves the body. There is no indication that chicken soup would help in the prevention of colds, but its use as a remedy for symptoms is common. It is largely a safe remedy with no ill side effects, and scientific evidence points more in favor of its cold-fighting properties(特性) than against it.

The Downside of Chicken Soup

Evidence in support of chicken soup's antiviral properties is not yet solid enough

to prove true, reliable medicinal effects. Although the evidence based on personal experiences and existing research seem to support a good effect of chicken soup, a clinical trial would be very difficult to perform. In addition, some people with food allergies (过敏性反应) or sensitivities to salt may experience ill side effects from chicken soup. Unbroken bones may also lead to a choking risk, particularly for children. However, the potential benefits of chicken soup seem to far outweigh the possible risks.

48.What does the underlined sentence suggest?

A.Mothers have long been helped by scientists to find remedies for colds.

B. Scientists have agreed for centuries with what mothers have understood.

C. People have tried chicken soup to help reduce cold symptoms since long ago.

D. Mothers know better how to deal with cold symptoms than scientists. 49.Which of the following is true about chicken soup?

A. It is particularly good for children.

B. It can prevent people from colds.

C. It is an amazing comfort food for people with colds.

D. It surely has medicinal effects on colds.

50.What's the author's opinion on chicken soup?

A. It is good for people with colds to have chicken soup.

B. Scientists have found solid evidence about the benefits of chicken soup.

C. Chicken soup can take the place of other medicines for colds.

D. People still argue whether chicken soup has effects on cold symptoms.
