When (Where, Who, Why, Wha t, How)…?

All of the following are mentioned in the passage except…

According to the passage, the best answer to…is…

The author says…because…

Which of the following may be the best reason for…

Is there enough oil beneath the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge(保护区)(ANWR)to help secure America’s energy future? President Bush certainly thinks so. He has argued that tapping ANWR’s oil would help ease California's electricity crisis and provide a major boost to the country’s energy independence. But no one knows for sure how much crude oil lies buried beneath the frozen earth. With the last government survey conducted in 1998, protecting output anywhere from 3 billion to 16 billion barrels.

1. What does President Bush think of tapping oil in ANWR?

A) It will exhaust the nation’s oil reserves.

B) It will help secure the future of ANWR.

C) It will help reduce the nation’s oil imports.

D) It will increase America’s energy consumption.

President Bush certainly thinks so. He has argued that tapping ANWR’s oil would help ease California's electricity crisis and provide a major boost to the country’s energy independence.

By saying..., the author suggests that.

What's the author's attitude towards?

It can be inferred that the preceding/following paragraph of the passage most probably discussed .

From the passage, it can be inferred that .

It is implied, but not stated, that .

The word ”...”in line...probably means.

Which of the following has the closest meaning to “...”?

The author uses the expression “...”to refer to.

The word “...”can best be replaced by.

Which of the following statements is TRUE/NOT TRUE?

All the following are true except .

Which of the following is NOT mentioned (included, implied) in the passage?

All of the following statements have relevance to...except....

这些语气词有:must, always, never, the most, all, only, have to, any, no, very completely, none, hardly等。

例(1) One of the great changes brought about by the knowledge society is that _____ 。

A. the difference between the employee and the employer has become insignificant。

B. people's traditional concepts about work no longer hold true。

C. most people have to take part-time jobs。

D. people have to change their jobs from time to time。

(2) The main idea of this passage is that _____ 。

A. better use of green space facilities should be made so as to improve the quality of our life。

B. attention must be directed to the improvement of recreative possibilities。

C. the urban environment is providing more recreation activities than it did many years ago。

D. priority must be given to the development of obligatory activities。

这些语气词有:can, could, may, should, usually, might, most(大多数),more or less, relatively, be likely to, possible, whether or, not necessarily 等。

例(1) It can be inferred from the passage that the author believes _____ 。

A. Americans are more ambitious than people in other countries

B. in many countries success often depends on one's social status

C. American businesses are more democratic than those in other countries

D. businesses in other countries are not as competitive as those in America

(2) According to the passage the problems of college education partly arise from the fact that _____ 。

A. society can't provide enough jobs for properly trained college graduates

B. high school graduates do not fit the pattern of college education?

C. too many students have to earn their own living

D. college administrators encourage students to drop out

(1) According to Dr. David, Americans _____ 。

A. are ideally vigorous even under the pressure of life

B. often neglect the consequences of sleep deficit

C. do not know how to relax themselves properly

D. can get by on 6.5 hours of sleep

(2) According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?(1996年1月六级题35)

A. Future man will be made of silicon instead of flesh and blood

B. Some day it will be difficult to tell a computer from a man

C. The reasoning power of computers has already surpassed that of man

D. Future intelligent life may not necessarily be made of organic matter。

剩下B、D两项,而D项中有不十分肯定语气词may not,故选D。)

(1) which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage?

A. Musical instruments developed through the years will sooner or later be replaced by computers。

B. Music can't be passed on to future generations unless it's recorded。

C. Folk songs can't be spread for unless they are printed on music sheet。

D. the development of music culture is highly dependent on its material aspect。

(2) The first paragraph is mainly about _____ .

A. the teenagers' criticism of their parents

B. misunderstandings between teenagers and their parents

C. the dominance of the parents over their children

D. the teenagers' ability to deal with crisis

(1) The population in the 21st century _____ , according to the writer 。

A. will be smaller than a few years ago

B. will not be as small as people expect

C. will prove to be a threat to the world

D. will not constitute as serious a problem as expected

(2) From the passage it can be seen that employeeship helps one .

A. to be more successful in his career

B. to solve technical problems

C. to be more specialized in his field

D. to develop his professional skill

(1) Advertising can persuade the consumer to buy worthless products by _____ 。

A. stressing their high quality

B. unlinking him of their low price

C. maintaining a balance between quality and price

D. appealing to his buying motives

(2) Raising children, in the author's opinion, is .

A. a moral duty

B. a thankless job

C. a rewarding task

D. a source of inevitable pain

None of the above"往往是用作干扰项。)

1 虽覆盖全文意思,但显得太笼统;

2其内容太窄,不能覆盖全文内容,只是文章内容的一部分,或只是文章内容的一个细枝未节;

(1) The author write this passage to _____ 。

A. discuss the negative aspects of being attractive

B. give advice to job-seekers who are attractive

C. demand equal rights for woman

D. emphasize the importance of appearance

(分析:文章中心意思是讲漂亮对女性的不利影响(But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability。) 故选A项。)

1 与原句内容相反;

2 与原文内容一半相同一半不同;

3 与原句内容相似但过于绝对化;

(1) According to the passage, which of the following statement is TRUE?(1996年1月六级题35)

A. Future man will be made of silicon instead of flesh and blood。

B. Some day it will be difficult to tell a computer from a man

C. The reasoning power of computers has already surpassed that of man?

D. Future intelligent life may not necessarily be made of organic matter。

(1) It can be inferred from the passage that earlier generations didn't realize _____ 。

A. the interdependence of water, soil and living things

B. the importance of the proper land use

C. the harmfulness of soil destruction and river floods

D. the extraordinary rapid growth of population

(2) It can be concluded from the passage that the introduction of electronic media into the world of music _____ 。

A. has brought about an information revolution

B. has speeded up the advent of a new generation of computers

C. has given rise to new forms of music culture

D. has led to the transformation of traditional musical instruments

(1) The author's attitude toward the communications revolution is _____ .

(2) What the last paragraph tells us is the author's _____ .

A. detailed analysis of the ways of raising poultry in Bangladesh

B. great appreciation of the development of poultry industry in Bangladesh。

C. critical view on the development of the poultry industry in Bangladesh

D. practical suggestion for the improvement of the poultry industry in Bangladesh。

(3) The author's attitude towards the speaker's remarks is _____ 。

(1) The author writes this passage to _____ 。

A. discuss the negative aspect of being attractive。

B. give advice to job-seekers who are attractive

C. demand equal rights for woman

D. emphasize the importance of appearance

(分析:考生若没有时间看整个文章,但只要看到第一段最后一句话:But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability. While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.

(2) The main idea of this passage is that _____ 。

A. better use of green space facilities should be made so as to improve the quality of our life

B. attention must be directed to the improvement of recreative possibilities。

C. the urban environment is providing more recreation activities than it did many years ago.??

D. priority must be given to the development of obligatory activities。

考生苦看到了该段第一句话:Green space facilities are contributing to an important extent to the quality of the urban environment.

(1) Tish Sommers argues that _____ .

A. older women find it hard to escape poverty。

B. older women usually perform better in their jobs

C. the major cause of the poverty of older women is sexism

D. more people have come to believe in sexism and ageism。

When sexism meets ageism, poverty is no longer in the doorstep it moves in"。

(2) According to Dr. David, Americans _____ .

A. are ideally vigorous even under the pressure of life

B. often neglect the consequences of sleep deficit

C. do not know how to relax themselves properly

D. can get by on 6.5 hours of sleep。

(分析:考生一看到此人名字,迅速从课文中找到,然后细读他所说的话:"people cheat on their sleep, and they don't even realize they're doing it," says Dr. David. "They think they're key because they can get by on 6.5 hours, when they really need 7.5, eight or even more to feel ideally vigorous."

(1) In the first paragraph, the author gives the definitions of some terms in order to _____ 。

(2) From the third paragraph, we can learn that _____ 。

(1) The word "dubious"(Line. 2)most probably means _____ 。

A valuable B. useful C. doubtful D. helpful

Yet you will find little if anything written on what it is to be an employee. You can find a great deal of very dubious advice on how to get a job or how to get a promotion.

(2) The word "hassles" in the passage (Line 4) probably means _____ 。

A. agreements

B. disadvantages

C. worries

D. quarrels

But sharing the family home requires adjustments for all. There are the hassles over bathrooms, telephones and privacy. Some families, however, manage the delicate balancing act. But for others, it proves too difficult.

Passage 1 By the time the Olympics begin in Atlanta this summer, the business world will have spent more than $ 1 billion to link their names and products to the Olympic Games. There are 10 Worldwide Sponsors, 10 Centennial Olympic Partners, about 20 regular sponsors and more than a hundred licensees. The Atlanta Games will boast an “official" scouring pad and timepiece, two official game shows, and three official vehicles: a family car, an import minivan and a luxury sedan. But what exactly do these companies reap for their huge investment At the very least, they command tickets to the most popular events, invitations to the best parties and prime hotel rooms. But most of all, according to US Postal Service, it is purchasing the right to spend money. And the right to spend money is expensive. The biggest backers, Olympic sponsors like Anheuser-Busch, Coca-Cola, Mcdonald's and Xerox, commit up to $ 40 million. But, getting the rights to the Olympic rings is only half the battle. The other half is the challenge to sort of wrap their product brands around that image. Often that means TV time. And at roughly $ 400 000 per 30-second spot, some of the biggest sponsors have already locked up every commercial slot in their product categories that NBC has to sell. Today, homelessness strikes much younger part of society. In fact, a 25-city survey by the U. S. Conference of Mayors in 1987 found that families with children make up the fastest growing part of the homeless population. Many homeless children gather in inner cities; this transient(变化无常的) and frequently frightened student population creates additional problems —both legal and educational —for already overburdened urban school administrators and teachers. Estimates of the number of homeless Americans range from 350,000 to three million. Likewise, estimates of the number of homeless school children vary radically. A U.S. Department of Education report, based on state estimates, states that there are 220,000 homeless school-age children, about a third of whom do not attend school on a regular basis, But the National Coalition for the Homeless estimates that there are at least two times as many homeless children, and that less than half of them attend school regularly. One part of the homeless population that is particularly difficult to count consists of the “throwaway”youths who have been cast of their homes. The Elementary School Center in New York City estimates that there are 1.5 million of them, many of whom are not counted as children because they do not stay in family shelters and tend to live by themselves on the streets.Federal law, the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act of 1987, includes a section that addresses the educational needs of homeless children. The educational provisions of the McKinney Act are based on the belief that all homeless children have the right to a free, appropriate education. 1. It is implied in the first paragraph that ____. A) the writer himself is homeless, even in his eighties B) many older homeless residents are going on strike in 25 cities C) there is a serious shortage of academic facilities D) homeless children are denied the opportunity of receiving free education 2. The National Coalition for the homeless believes that the number of homeless children is _____. A) 350,000 B) 1,500,000 C) 440,000 D) 110,000 3. One part of the homeless population is difficult to estimate. The reason might well be ____. A) the homeless children are too young to be counted as children B) the homeless population is growing rapidly

Trees should only be pruned when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and , fortunately, the number of such reasons is small. Pruning involves the cutting away of obergrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way. First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut diseaed or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the centre and so preventing the free movement of air. One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but itis a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healing and the desease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce which has been pruned smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hurs and then paint it with one of the substances available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually without interference from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts yu make will bleed. If this does happen,it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly. 1.Pruning should be done to ______. a.make the tree grow taller

An unidentified wit once said, "laugh, and the world laughs with you. Snore, and you sleep alone." Yet snoring is far from a laughing matter, as those unfortunates with good hearing, who are rightly subjected to the sounds of the snoring disorder, will testify. It has been estimated that one of eight Americans snores; this means that there are approximately 21 million people --- women as well as men - who render an unpleasant sound when they are asleep. And assuming that each snorer disturbs the sleep of at least one other person, it necessarily follows that there are 21 million unhappy listeners. While a sleeping person breathes, either in or out, several structures in his nose and throat generate the snoring. The sounds, coming from the soft palate and other soft structures of the throat, are caused by vibratory responses to inflowing and outflowing air. When the soft tissues of the mouth and throat come close to the lining of the throat, the vibrations that occur are caused by the position of the tongue. In short, the noise made by snoring can be compared to the noise when breezes flutter a flag on a pole. The frequency of the vibrations depends on the size, density, and elasticity of the affected tissues and on the force of the air flow. Although it is usually the process of in haling or exhaling through the mouth that cause snoring, short snores come from the nose of an open-mouthed sleeper. In all fairness to snorers, however, it should be emphasized that snoring is an involuntary out which stops as the offender is awakened. 16. PART Ⅱ READING COMPREHENSION [25 MIN.] In this section there are four passages followed by fifteen questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the correct answer.Mark your choice on your ANSWER SHEET. TEXT A As many as one thousand years ago in the Southwest, the Hopi and Zuni Indians of North America were building with adobe-sun baked brick plastered with mud. Their homes looked remarkably like modern apartment houses. Some were four stories high and contained quarters for perhaps a thousand people, along with storerooms for grain and other goods. These buildings were usually put up against cliffs, both to make construction easier and for defense against enemies. They were really villages in themselves, as later Spanish explorers must have realized since they called them “pueblos”, which is Spanish for town. The people of the pueblos raised what are called “the three sisters”—corn, beans, and squash. They made excellent pottery and wove marvelous baskets, some so fine that they could hold water. The Southwest has always been a dry country, where water is scarce. The Hopi and Zuni brought water from streams to their fields and gardens through irrigation ditches. Water was so important that it played a major role in their religion. They developed elaborate ceremonies and religious rituals to bring rain. The way of life of less settled groups was simpler and more strongly influenced by nature. Small tribes such as the Shoshone and Ute wandered the dry and mountainous lands between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. They gathered seeds and hunted small animals such as small rabbits and snakes. In the Far North the ancestors of today’s Inuit hunted seals, walruses, and the great whales. They lived right on the frozen seas in shelters called igloos built of blocks of packed snow. When summer came, they fished for salmon and hunted the lordly caribou. The Cheyenne, Pawnee, and Sioux tribes, known as the Plains Indians, lived on the grasslands between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River. They hunted bison, commonly called the buffalo. Its meat was the chief food of these tribes, and its hide was used to make their clothing and covering of their tents and tipis. 16. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. The architecture of early American Indian buildings. B. The movement of American Indians across North America. C. Ceremonies and rituals of American Indians. D. The way of life of American Indian tribes in early North America. 17. It can be inferred from the passage that the dwellings of the Hopi and Zuni were ___ A. very small B. highly advanced C. difficult to defend D. quickly constructed TEXT B Most earthquakes occur within the upper 15 miles of the earth’s surface. But earthquakes can and do occur at all depths to about 460 miles. Their number decreases as the depth increases. At about 460 miles one earthquake occurs only every few years. Near the surface earthquakes may run as high as 100 in a month, but the yearly average does not vary much. In comparison with the total number of earthquakes each year, the number of disastrous earthquakes is very small.[JP] The extent of the disaster in an earthquake depends on many factors. If you carefully build a toy house with an erect set, it will still stand no matter how much you shake the table. But if you build a toy house with a pack of cards, a slight shake of the table will make it fall. An earthquake in Agadir, Morocco, was not strong enough to be recorded on distant instruments, but it completely destroyed the city. Many stronger earthquakes have done
