Many children dream of becoming astronauts, scientists, teachers or pop stars, but
it is unlikely that many would say, “When I grow up, I want to help people pick their baby’ｓ
name.”
Yet one British teenager is a baby namer who is laughing all the way to the bank.
Beau Jessup, 16, has earned more than ￡48,000 (422,155 yuan) by helping Chinese parents choose English names for their children, according to the BBC.
A student at Cheltenham Ladies College in England, Jessup had the idea during a family
visit to China. It came when, during a meal out, she was asked by her parents’
friends to suggest an English name for their newborn baby.
And thus, her business was born: She founded the Specialname website.
After choosing their child’s
gender (性别), parents are asked by the site to select from a
list of 12 personality traits (特点) – including sensitive, honest, creative and clever –to match the way they would like their kid to be.
Three names are then suggested, along with their meanings and a famous person with the same name such as Grace Kelly or Catherine Middleton. For example, Rose means elegant, sensitive and reliable. Parents can share the choices with their family and friends using messaging app WeChat so they can help make the final choice.
Users are charged dozens of yuan to use the service. Jessup said she was happy to have played a part in the lives of many families and changed her own life.
“I have a target to reach that will allow me to pay for my university fees, and writing the text for the site was really good practice for my Mandarin GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education),”
she told The Independent.
The practice of the Chinese choosing Western names for themselves and their kids has been going on for decades. It is especially handy when it comes to cross-cultural communication.

the first of its kind. Last year, Lindsay Jernigan from the US started a similar site called “Best E nglish Names”．

One of the biggest street parties in the world took over London recently.
The Notting Hill Carnival, which took place from Aug
28-29, is recognized as the largest street party in Europe.
But in these troubled times – with terrorist (恐怖主义的)
attacks and religious anger on the front page of newspapers –
is it appropriate to spend the weekend dancing in the streets

The festival, now in its 50th year, started in 1966. But it was much smaller – around 1,000
people attended – and began as a way to bring together the diffe rent groups who called London’s
Notting Hill their home.
Creator Rhaune Laslett, herself half Native American, half Russian, had the idea for the first
carnival after having a vision (愿景). “I could see the streets full of people in brightly colored
costumes, they were dancing and following bands and they were happy,” she told the Caribbean Times in 1989. “Men, women, children, black, white, brown, all laughing.”
During a period of racial tension (种族关系紧张), Laslett believed that music and laughter
could bring together the different nationalities in her west London neighborhood.
“We felt that although West Indians, Africans, Irish and many other nationalities all live in a
very smal l area, there is very little communication between us,” she explained in an interview in 1966, shortly after the first carnival took place.
Over the years, the party has grown into its modern day form.
“Our participants find themselves in a space of music,color and creativity which brings
about the emotion of joy and encourages the freedom to express themselves,” said Debora Alley De Gazon, the carnival’s creative director.
However, not everyone is queuing (排队) up to join in, despite(不管)the carnival’s
all-inclusive (全包含的) idea.
“I can’t go out from my door on that day with all the rubbish around,” said Fortuoso Cr who lives in London.
But when a million people come together for a weekend of eating, laughter and music –
