Eating a diet high in processed food (加工食品) increases the risk of depression, research s more, people who ate plenty of vegetables, fruit and fish actually had a lower suggests. What’

risk of depression, the University College London team found.

Data on diet among 3,500 middle-aged civil servants (公务员) were compared with their emotional state five years later, a British journal reported. They split the participants into two types of diet—those who ate a diet largely based on whole food, which includes lots of fruit, vegetables and fish, and those who ate a mainly processed food diet, such as sweetened desserts, fried food, processed meat, refined grains and high-fat dairy products. After accounting for factors such as gender, age, education, physical activity, smoking habits and chronic (慢性的) diseases, they found a significant difference in the future depression risk with the different diets.

Those who ate the most wholefood had a 26% lower risk of future depression than those who ate the least wholefood. By contrast, people with a diet high in processed food had a 58% higher

risk of depression than those who ate a diet low in processed foods.

Study author Dr. Archana Singh-Manoux pointed out there was a chance the finding could be explained by a lifestyle factor they had not accounted for.

There was a paper showing a Mediterranean diet was associated with a lower risk of

depression, but the problem with that is if you live in Britain, the likelihood (可能性) of you

eating a Mediterranean diet is not very high.

Speech—the act of uttering sounds to convey meaning—is a kind of human action. Like any other constantly repeated action, speaking has to be learned, but once it is learned, it becomes a generally unconscious and apparently automatic process.

As far as we can determine, human beings do not need to be forced to speak;most babies seem to possess a sort of instinctive drive to produce speech like noises. How to speak and what to say are another matter altogether. These actions are learned from the particular society into which the baby is born;so that, like all conduct that is learned from a society—from the people around us—speech is a patterned activity.

The meandering (漫无目地的) babble (咿呀学语) and chatter of a young child are eventually channeled by imitation into a few orderly grooves that represent the pattern accepted as

s indiscriminate (不加分辨的) practice meaningful by the people around him. Similarly, a child’

of putting things into his mouth becomes limited to putting food into his mouth in a certain way.

The sounds that a child can make are more varied and numerous than the sounds that any particular language uses. However, a child born into a society with a pattern of language is encouraged to make a small selection of sounds and to make these few sounds over and over until it is natural for him to make these sounds and not others.

66. For an adult, the process of speaking usually involves________.

A. conscious selection of sounds

B. imitation of those around him

C. a drive to make noises

D. unconscious actions

67. The selection says that most babies have an instinctive drive to ______.

A. express ideas in words

B. make speech like noise

C. convey meaning

D. imitate sounds around them

68. Conduct that is learned from a society may be called _______.

A. instinctive drive

B. selection

C. automatic activity

D. patterned activity

69. The sounds that a child is able to make are ________.

A.not as varied as those used in language

B.more varied and numerous than those in any language

C.far fewer than those needed to form a language

70. We may say that a child has learned to speak if he ________.

A. makes varied sounds

B. carefully considers each sound he makes

C. makes only certain sounds naturally

D. imitates people around him

Canyonlands National Park, a famous tourist attraction in Utah where visitors can see arches and other beautiful rock formations(岩石结构), is a wild , lonely area of rocks ,rivers and desert plants. Only native Americans, cowboys, and explorers entered this area before the park was set up in 1964. Even today , it is difficult to walk or ride through the park. The roads are still made of

dirt .Driving requires a special vehicle .The National Park Service says Canyonlands National Park

is wild America.

Rivers created the area as they cut rocks into many different formations. At the center of the park are two deep canyons carved by Green and Colorado Rivers. Three areas that surround these rivers are included in the park.

One of these areas is called the Maze District. This area includes rock art made by people who lived there more than 2000 years ago. Yet many people today cannot see the Maze District because it is so difficult to reach. The area is one of the loneliest and wildest in the United States.

Another area of the park is called the Needles. It includes long, thin, red and white rocks that reach high into the air like fingers on a hand.

A good way to see all the areas of Canyonlands National Park is to fly over it. A one-hour trip

s red rocks, flat areas where ancient Indian in a small airplane makes it possible to see the park’

people once lived.

From high in the air, visitors can clearly see the third area of the park----a high broad flat rock known as the Island in the sky. The island was formed between two rivers.

Another interesting formation is called the Up-heaval Dome. This is a huge hole about 450 meters deep and 1.5 kilometers wide. It is considered to be the most unusual geologic(地质的)

2019年浙江省十校联盟高三10月联考 英语试题 注意事项: 1.答题前填写好自己的姓名、班级、考号等信息; 2.请将答案正确填写在答题卡上。 第I卷(选择题) 一、阅读理解 One evening last summer, 11-year-old Owen and his mom put on white suits and taped their rain boots to their pant legs. Then they each grabbed a wooden pole with a large white cloth attached to it and started dragging the tools through the trees and grass in their Wisconsin backyard. They were looking for ticks(扁虱虫). Owen’s mom, Amy Prunuske, teaches microbiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Wausau. She studies diseases that ticks carry. Owen, though, is known as a citizen scientist. Citizen scientists are people—young or old—who help collect data for research projects. They usually aren’t professional scientists, or if they are, not in the field of the project. Still, their work can be incredibly important. Citizen scientists can help trained scientists gather data from all over the world—even from space. They can provide new ideas and new ways of thinking. Kids often make great citizen scientists because they tend to be curious and good at following precise directions. Sometimes they’re even better at these things than adults. And schools are convenient places for scientists to recruit big groups of helpers. As a bonus, citizen science often gets kids more excited about science. Citizen science takes advantage not just of many sets of eyeballs, but also of many minds. When professional European scientists in Austria were trying to find how best to encourage people to use less energy, they partnered with student citizen scientists. The adult scientists had a long list of questions for people about how much energy they used. Right away, the students noticed some problems the adults hadn’t thought of. There were too many questions, the kids said. And some of those questions were too complicated.
