Every kid wishes to be an adult. Do you remember playing house as a child — pretending(假装)to be a grown-up like your parents? Did you imagine you were a doctor, a soldier or a teacher? At that time, anything seemed more exciting than being young.

But now as grown-ups, some adults find they cannot leave childhood behind. They become “kidults”. Being a kidult has become a lifestyle choice among young people across Asia.

Some kidults collect toys they once played with. Hello Kitty, Garfield, and Snoopy have many adult fans around the world. It is not unusual to see a 20-something woman with a big, Garfield-shaped cushion on her sofa or a Hello Kitty mobile phone accessory(配件、附件).

Other kidults still enjoy children's stories and fairy tales. For example, the British publisher Bloomsbury even released an edition(发布一个版本) of the Harry Potter novels with an adult cover. That way, no one else on the subway will know that an adult is actually reading a children's book.

“Kidults can be like vitamins to society. Adults who love their childhood most and hold on to pure, child-like emotion may be needed in such a rough and dry society,” said Lee So-jung, a professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.

He added that kidult culture may fill the generation gap between adults and kids. It could give children and their parents books, movies, and cartoon shows to enjoy together.

Tim Greenhalgh, an adviser in London explained that some kidults just refuse to grow up. They hold on to childhood because working life in a busy and stressful city frightens them. Kidults would like to forget their age and openly show their fear of society and adulthood.

“So, they can escape from increasingly busy and stressful lives that are hard to deal with,” Greenhalgh said.

(1)Why does a kid wish to be an adult?

A. Because he wants to be independent(独立).

A. Some kidults refuse to grow up.

B. Some kidults in Britain like reading on the subway.

C. Some kidults think childhood is the best time of their life.

D. Some kidults want to escape from the busy and stressful life

(3)One of the advantages of the kidult culture is that ______.

A. it can make adults face the real social life

B. it can make our society young and full of life

C. it can increase the sales of children's books

D. it can lead to harmonious(和谐的)relationship between adults and kids

Dear Dr. Manners,

My close friend seldom says "please". She will say "Can you get me that bag?" or" Move it over there!" I have told her a lot of times that it is polite to use "please" and "thank you", but she hardly remembers. I feel that she is ordering me around without "please", and I always get angry. We have been close friends for over 10 years. It seems that I can't stand it any more. What should I do? Can you help me?

Sincerely,

Hawkins Dear Ms Hawkins,

When your friend docs not use polite words, it seems that she is ordering you to do something. So you have right(权利) to hate her behavior.

Ask her why she doesn't use "please" or "thank you". Explain to her that it makes you feel uncomfortable. Also, you don't need to do anything for her because she doesn't seem kind or pleasant when she asks you to.

Maybe your friend was not taught how to use "please" or "thank you" in the normal conversation. So you can try to teach her that. Remember it is difficult to find another close friend if you lose one.

Best regards,

以及“I have told her a lot of times that it is polite to use ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, but she hardly remembers.” (2)根据第一封信的内容中的“We have been close friends for over 10 years”可知。

(3)根据第二封信的内容中的“it seems that she ordering you to do something. So you have right(权利) to hate her behavior.”

People in different countries speak different languages. But is there a language that can be understood by everyone in the world? If there is, the answer might be EMOJIS(表情符号).

Emojis are a kind of special language. Pictures are used to put meaning across. A group called the Unicode Consortium works on choosing emojis. It has added new emojis every year since 2014. They show what people think about and like.

Emojis can be used to represent(代表) different groups of people. In 2015, emoji faces with different skin tones(肤色) were added. In 2016, different jobs were added , such as doctor, police officer and painter. This year, emojis of disabled people were added including emojis of blind people and people in wheelchairs.

But there is also more to emojis. They can also refer to(指的是) pop culture and new cultural trends(潮流).

New emojis in 2019 also include several animals, such as sloths(树懒) and flamingos(火烈鸟). These animals are not very common, but are known to many people. For example, sloths have become popular because of the 2016 film Zootopia(《疯狂动物城》). Many fashion designers(设计师) have included flamingos in their designs in recent years. 4.

In the park, you see a group of people, all looking up at the sky. Without thinking about it, you look upwards, too. Why? In the concert, someone begins to clap and suddenly the whole room joins in. You do, too. Why?

Sometimes we feel we are acting correctly when we do the same as others. The more people follow an idea, the better or truer we think the idea is. It's the social proof (社会认同感) that works.

The scientist Asch carried out an experiment. It shows how social proof can influence us. In a room, a man is shown Line 1, and next to it are three lines (A, B, C). A is longer, C is shorter and B is as long as Line 1. He must tell which of the three lines is as long as Line 1. When the man is alone, he gives the correct answer B. Then, five other men enter the room, and each of them gives the answer C as they were told to. Now the man changes his idea and gives the answer C.

Asch got the same result many times among different subjects

Why do we act like this? Well, in the past, following others was a way to keep from danger. Suppose that 5000 years ago you were hunting (打猎) with friends. Suddenly, they all ran away. What would you have done? Would you have stayed? No, you would have run, too. We are descendants (后代) of those who copied others' action. It is so deeply planted in our mind that we still use it now.

Social proof has special power. The advertising industry, for example, often makes use of it. So be capful whenever a company says its product is "the most popular".

(1)At the beginning of the passage, the writer leads in the topic by ________.

A. telling a story

B. giving examples

C. answering questions

D. showing a map (2)According to Paragraph 3, the experiment by Asch shows ________.

A. following others is always right

B. social proof may change people's ideas

C. it's difficult to carry out the experiment

D. people can study better if they are alone

(3)The underlined word "It" in Paragraph g refers to ________.

A. running with others

B. hunting with friends

C. copying others' action

D. doing something different

(4)According to the passage, we can infer (推断) that ________.

A. it's important to run with others anytime

B. products in the advertisement are the best

C. we mustn't copy others' action to keep safe

D. we need to think twice before following others

【答案】(1)B

(2)B

(3)C

(4)D

In the park, you see a group of people, all looking up at the sky. Without thinking about it, you look upwards, too. Why? In the concert, someone begins to clap and suddenly the whole room joins in. You do, too. Why?

Suppose that 5000 years ago you were hunting (打猎) with friends. Suddenly, they all ran away. What would you have done? Would you have stayed? No, you would have run, too. We are descendants (后代) of those who copied others' action. So be careful whenever a company says its product is "the most popular".

Many scientists think that the earth is getting warmer and warmer. If the change continues, the natural world and human society will face danger. Scientists believe human activity is responsible for the climate change. We produce too many greenhouse gases. They keep heat in the air and make the earth warm.

Many of the world's governments agree. And they want to solve the problem. So from December 7 to 18, 2009, they held a conference in Copenhagen, Denmark to talk about global warming and climate change.

Representatives(代表) from 192 countries and regions went to the meeting. Although they have not reached an agreement, the Copenhagen Accord(《哥本哈根协议》) was an important beginning to save the earth. It was made by a small group of countries including China, the US, India, Brazil and South Africa. Some other countries at the conference also showed support. Many countries and organizations are disappointed that the conference didn't reach a legal document(法律约定). And they think the accord is not clear enough about its goals.

What do you see when you look at abstract (抽象的)art? Can you understand it? Does it look like anything?

Abstract art became popular in the early 20th century. Artists did not want to paint, draw, or sculpt things exactly like they looked. They didn't want their art to be realistic(现实的). They were more interested in basic shapes and colours.

Picasso is probably the most famous of these artists. He painted and drew in many, many styles. Sometimes he used a lot of blue colours (his "blue period"). Later, he used more red and pink colours (his "rose period"). Many of his other paintings are called "cubist (立体派的)" because they are made of painted squares.

After a long time, Picasso's paintings became more and more abstract. He painted people and things using strange shapes. His work was so strange that many of his workmates didn't understand it.

Kandinsky, another famous artist, used lines, shapes, and patterns to paint his subjects. His paintings also used strong colours to express feelings. Other artists like the surrealists (超现实主义画家),were interested in subconsciousness (潜意识). Painters like Breton and Magritte used many symbols in their work. The meaning or subject of their work wasn't always clear. Dali, another surrealist artist, painted pictures that looked like dreams.

There are still many abstract artists around the world. That's the way many artists prefer. They want each person to look at art and find their own meaning in it.

(1)Which would be most like abstract art?

A. A painting of a house.

B. A sculpture of a car.

C. A drawing of two people in a coffee house.

D. A red and blue painting, with no clear subject.

(2)What happened to Picasso's work after a long time?

A. It became more abstract.

B. It became less strange.

C. He went from using red colours to using blue colours.

D. He only painted with coloured squares.

(3)How did Kandinsky express feelings?

A. By using strong colours.

B. By painting realistic people.

C. By painting with a lot of symbols.

D. By painting in red and pink colours.

(4)Which of the following is NOT true?

A. Picasso painted in many different styles.

B. Dali was interested in dreams.

C. Abstract artists feel each work of art only has one meaning.

D. Magritte's art was full of symbols.

Earlier this year, China achieved a new milestone (里程碑) in space research. On January 3, 2019, Chang'e-4 became the first lunar probe (月球探测器) in history to successfully land on the far side of the moon. The Earth's gravity (重力) slows the moon's rotation (自转), matching it to the speed of its orbit (公转). Therefore, the far side of the moon is almost "dark" and has never been seen. It's this sense of the unknown that makes the far side of the moon such an interesting place for scientific and space research. Being blown by solar (太阳的) winds, the far side may have the special minerals (矿物质). For this reason, Chang'e-4 will study the effect of solar winds on the lunar surface and any mineral found by the spacecraft. Chang'e-4 is also carrying flower seeds, potatoes and silkworm eggs to see whether life is possible on the moon. If it is, then the moon will become a possible choice for space travel in the future. However, research of the "dark" side isn't easy. As the far side is blocked(阻断) off from us, radio noise coming off Earth is also blocked. This is why China's relay satellite (中继卫星) Queqiao was sent up in May, 2018. Thanks to Queqiao, the communication problem between Earth and Chang'e-4 has been well solved. Power supply (电源供应) is also a challenge to the task. Chang'e-4 gets energy from the sun through its solar panels. As we know, a lunar day has the length (长度) of 28 Earth days. After Chang'e-4 was sent up on December 8, 2018, it took the probe over 20 days to orbit the moon to be in a position to be able to land in moon daylight and use its solar panels. Luckily, everything goes well, Chang'e-4 has worked on the "dark" side for over 5 months. It has sent back many photos of the far side of the moon and has been used to carry out some scientific experiments. The New York Times used the word "groundbreaking" to praise the task and wrote that "it will offer help to the history and development of the moon". (1)When was Chang'e-4 sent up? A. In May, 2018. B. On December 8, 2018. C. On January 3, 2019.
