Task 1 (2×5=10分)

Read the passage and choose the appropriate letters A—D to answer each question.

You have been badly injured in a car accident. It is necessary to give you a blood transfusion (输血) because you lost a great deal of blood in the accident. However, special care must be taken in selecting new blood for you. If the blood is too different from your own, the transfusion could kill you.

There are four basic types of blood: A, B, AB and O. A single test can indicate a person’s blood type. Everybody is born with one of these four types of blood. Blood type, like hair color and height, is passed down from parents.

Because of substances contained in each type, the four groups must be transfused carefully. Basically, A and B cannot be mixed. A and B cannot receive AB, but AB may receive A or B. O can be given to any other groups; hence, it is often called the universal donor. For the opposite reason, AB is sometimes called the universal recipient. However, because too many reactions can happen in transfusions, patients usually receive only salt or plasma (血浆) until their blood can be matched as exactly as possible in the blood bank of a hospital. In this way, it is possible to avoid any bad reactions to the transfusion.

31. What would be the best title of this passage?

A)A Car Accident.

B)Types of Blood.

C)Blood Transfusion.

D)Hospital Services.

32. What would happen to a patient who receives a different type of blood from his or her own?

A) He or she could die. B) His or her life could be saved.

C) He or she could recover (痊愈) soon. D) He or she could not be killed.

33. Which of the following is true?

A) A person’s blood type can change with age.

B) A person’s blood type is determined by that of one’s parents.

C)Many tests have to be done to find out a person’s blood type.

D) A person might have more than one type of blood.

34. The “universal donor” in Para. 3 refers to ________.

5

A)Blood type A

B)Blood type B

C)Blood type AB

D)Blood type O

35. Why is only salt or plasma given to the patients in need of blood before the exact match in the

blood bank of a hospital is found?

A)To avoid bad reaction to the transfusion.

B)To avoid mixing blood type A and B.

C)To avoid transfusing the wrong blood.

D)Not given.

Task 2(1×5=5分)

For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. In 1985 when a Japan Air Lines (JAL) jet crashed, its president, Yasumoto Takagi, called each victim’s family to apologize, and then promptly resigned. And in 1987, when a subsidiary of Toshiba sole sensitive military technology to the former Soviet Union, the chairman of Toshiba gave up his post. These executive actions, which Toshiba calls “the highest form of apology,”may seem bizarre to US managers. No one at Boeing resigned after the JAL crash, which may have been caused by a faulty Boeing repair. The difference between the two business cultures centers around different definitions of delegation. While US executives give both responsibility and authority to their employees, Japanese executives delegate only authority—the responsibility is still theirs. Although the subsidiary that sold the sensitive technology to the Soviets had its own management, the Toshiba top executives said they “must take personal responsibility for not creating an atmosphere throughout the Toshiba group that would make such activity unthinkable, even in an independently run subsidiary.” Such acceptance of community responsibility is not unique to businesses in Japan. School principals in Japan have resigned when their students committed major crimes after school hours. Even if they do not quit, Japanese executives will often accept primary responsibility in other ways, such as taking the first pay cut when a company gets into financial trouble. Such personal sacrifices, even if they are largely symbolic, help to create the sense of community and employee loyalty that is crucial to the Japanese way of doing business. Harvard Business School professor George Lodge calls the ritual acceptance of blame “almost a feudal (封建的) way of purging (清除) the community of dishonor,”and to some in the United States, such resignations look cowardly. However, in an era in which both business and governmental leaders seem particularly good at evading responsibility, many US managers would probably welcome an infusion (灌输) of the Japanese sense of responsibility, If, for instance,

He was acknowledging one of our most distinctive characteristics:the fact that we are social animals whose behavior and personalities are shaped by the groups to which we belong. Throughout life, most of our daily activities are performed in the company of others. Whether our purpose is working, playing, raising a family, learning,or simply relaxing,we usually pursue it in groups, even if the group is as small as two or three people. Out need for human contacts is not merely a practical one;it is a deep psychological need as well. If people are deprived of the company of others for prolonged periods, mental breakdown is the usual result. Even the Geneva Convention(日内瓦公约),an international agreement that regulates the treatment of prisoners of war, recognizes this need. It regards solitary (孤独的)imprisonment for more than thirty day as a cruel form of torture(折磨)。 In its strictest sense, a group is a collection of people interacting together in an orderly way on the basis of shared expe ctations about one another‘s behavior. As result of this interaction, members feel a common sense of“belonging.”They distinguish members from nonmembers and expect certain kinds of behavior from outsiders. 21.By“No man is an island,”John Donne means _____.
