Thinking is something you choose to do as a fish chooses to live in water. To be human is to think. But thinking may come naturally without your knowing how you do it.Thinking about drinking is the key to critical(判断性的)thinking. When you think critically, you take control of your thinking processes(过程).Otherwise, you might be controlled by the ideas of others.Indeed, critical thinking is at the heart of education.

The word “critical” here has a special meaning. It does not mean taking one view against another view, as when someone criticizes another person for doing something wrong. The nature of critical thinking is thinking beyond the easily seen-beyond the pictures on TV, the untrue reports in the newspapers, and the faulty reasoning.

Critical thinking is an attitude as much as an activity. If you are curious about life and desire to dig deeper into it, you are a critical thinker. If you find pleasure in deep thinking about different ideas, characters, and facts, you are a critical thinker.

Activities of the mind and higher-order reasoning are processes of deep and careful consideration. They take time, and do not go hand in hand with the fast speed in today’s world: fast foods, instant coffee, and self-developing film.If you are among the people who believe that speed is a measure of intelligence(智力), you may learn something new from a story about Albert Einstein. The first time Banesh Hoffman, a scientist, was to discuss his work with Albert Einstein.Hoffman was too nervous to speak. But Einstein immediately put Hoffman at ease by s aying, “Please go slowly.I don’t understand things quickly.”

1.Critical thinking is important to us because if we do not think critically, _______.A.it will be hard for us to think naturally and fast.B.we might be controlled by other people’s ideas.

C.we will follow the ideas of others naturally.D.we might be footed by other people’s ideas.

2.If you are a critical thinker, you will ________.

A.think deeply about different ideas B.trust the reports in the newspapers

A.the smarter you are, the faster you do things B.the faster you do things, the smarter you become

C.speed can improve intelligence D.intelligence is not decided by speed 4.What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Thinking and Critical Thinking.B.Understanding Critical Thinking.

C.Thinking Is Natural and Human.D.Thinking Fast Means Intelligence.

My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America. You could open a restaurant. You could work for the government and get good retirement benefits. You could be rich. You could become famous.

"Of course you can be a talented child or what they call a wonder girl, too." My mother told me when I was nine. "You can be best at anything."

Every night after dinner, my mother presented tests, taking examples from stories of amazing children she had read in Believe It or Not , Good Housekeeping , Rea ders’Digest and some others. She looked through the magazines, searching for stories about remarkable children.

The first night she brought out a story about a three-year-old boy. He knew capitals of all states and could also pronounce the names of foreign cities correctly.

"What’s the capital of Finland?" Mother asked me. But all I knew was the capital of California.

The tests got harder -- multiplying (乘) numbers in my head, standing on my head without using my hands, predicting the daily temperature in Los Angeles, New York or London and etc.

One night I had to look at a page from the Bible for three minutes and then report everything I could remember. After seeing my mother’s disappointments once again, something inside of me began to die. I began to hate the tests, the raised hopes and failed expectations. Before going to bed that night, I looked in the mirror. When I saw only my face staring back and it would always be this ordinary face -- I began to cry. Such a sad, ugly girl!

And then I saw what seemed to be the talented side of me. I looked at the reflection (映像) , blinking so I could see more clearly. The girl was angry, powerful. This girl and I were the same. I had new thoughts, thoughts filled with lots of won’t. I won’t let her change me. I won’t be what I am not.

Word Pictures Ignite (点燃)Readers’ Imaginations

When your writing assignment calls for you to set a scene or establish a mood, says Bruce Garrison in Professional Feature Writing, “your goal may include making the reader ‘see’, ‘feel’, and ‘touch’ the subject of your writing. Y ou want to create mental images of the person, the place, the scenery. You want to present the opportunity for the reader to use his or her ‘mental senses’ —that is, to imagine the smell, sound, feel, the emotion, the physical appearance, and even the taste of the subject.”

Garrison goes on to explain:

This is what descriptive and color writing is all about... This type of writing requires great concentration and highly tuned observational skills on your part. An alert (灵活的; 机警的) writer will notice the colors, odors, the noise, and other elements of a setting and put the reader in the middle of the action by describing these in depth. You accomplish this by using precise adjectives and adverbs, as well as exact nouns and verbs to convey that right image.

Writers achieve descriptive effects in their articles in a variety of ways with a wide range of writing tools. Some like to focus on their observations and use adjectives, and lots of them, throughout their writing. Others work hard to find the right nouns (for example, dirge instead of song). This requires a superior command of the English language. Using a broad vocabulary is not enough.

This type of writing also requires timing — you must be able to determine when to go heavily

into description and when to back away from the temptation. Some like to let the story be told by the well-chosen words of others in direct quotations.

The primary rule is simple. When you think description helps a story, make certain what you are writing about is distinctive. The description and color should have a purpose. If you can find unique characteristics instead of the ordinary, then the additional color, or atmosphere, you add to a story through detailed descriptive writing usually works. Certainly, the way you write also makes a difference. Choosing words and putting them together also affects the impact description has on your readers. Organization, or order, of the information has a similar impact.

(英语)高三英语阅读理解技巧(很有用)及练习题 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 American college students are becoming more adventuresome as they study abroad, showing less interests in English-speaking destinations such as Great Britain and Australia and more in such countries as China, India, Argentina and Brazil. Britain remained the most popular study destination in 2005, according to annual figures from the Institute of International Education, followed by Italy, Spain and France. But the number of American students studying in Britain and Australia descended a little, even as the number of American students abroad rose by 8%. The growth came in non-English speaking European countries and in Asia. China is now the eighth most popular destination for American students, attracting nearly 6,400 in 2005, up 35% from the number of the year before. Argentina and India saw increases of more than 50%. Allan Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education, said that a range of factors contributed to the trend, from growing awareness of globalization after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, to programs such as former President Bush's National Security Language Initiative, which trains soldiers, intelligence officers and diplomats in foreign languages. “What Americans are doing is waking up and discovering there's a world out there,” he said. Other figures showed the flow of students in the opposite direction, from foreign countries into American universities. The institute found that international enrollment (入学) in American higher education remained steady at about 565,000. The figures are of keen interest to universities, which depend on foreign students for teaching and research help, and to policy-makers, who consider it important, as future foreign leaders may be familiar with the United States. The year of 2005 saw big increases in students from South Korea, Mexico and Taiwan of China. India sends the most students and China is No.2. Other countries that show large percentage increases in the number of students sent to the US include Nepal and Vietnam, while Japan, Turkey and Malaysia saw declines. About 58% of international students in the US come from Asia. (1)What does the underlined word “descended” in Paragraph 2 means? A. Changed. B. Declined. C. Multiplied. D. Increased. (2)Why do more American students study in Asia? A. They expect to get more teaching and research help. B. They lose confidence in English-speaking countries. C. They are afraid that terrorist attacks will happen again. D. They prefer to explore a different world from their own. (3)Where were most foreign students in America from in 2005? A. China. B. India. C. Argentina. D. Britain. (4)What can we infer from the passage? A. There were 6,400 American students studying in China in 2005. B. Chinese students to America will overpass Indians in the future. C. International enrollment in American higher education changed a lot. D. Asian students

高三英语阅读理解专项训练及答案含解析

高三英语阅读理解专项训练及答案含解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Average humans can consume 15 or more drinks in plastic bottles a month. If you were born after 1978, and live until 80 years old, you will leave behind a minimum of 14,400 plastic bottles on this planet. These bottles take hundreds of years to break down into tiny pieces of plastic, never to completely disappear. Most of the waste is consumed by fish and birds, which has shortened their lifetime greatly. The Plastic Bottle Village is just a great idea that might finally save us from being buried in plastic. It's a community in Panama that is going to be made of used bottles. The design process begins with building steel frames, which are then filled with these bottles. Once this step is complete, and electrical and plumbing (管道装置) lines are put inside, the plastic walls are covered by concrete—both inside and outside. So no one will actually be able to tell that the walls are made of plastic. Besides, the material will keep the house 17°C cooler than the outside, which is the biggest benefit to people living inside. The village is the brainchild (主意) of Robert Bezeau with the intention of setting up several environmental projects. Having started a recycling program four years ago, during which a number of plastic bottles were collected, he started to think of how they could be put to use. Soon enough, he decided to use them to build houses, and came up with a basic idea for the construction process. The project hopes to make people conscious of the waste that these bottles create so that they can do more to protect the environment. The village will also create an education center that will teach individuals from the world how to reuse plastic bottles as construction materials for shelter. Recycled bottles could neutralize the negative effect of your passage on this planet, and move closer to leaving only your “footprints”. (1)What does Paragraph 1 intend to tell us? A. The reason for buying fewer drinks. B. The difficult situation of wildlife. C. The amount of plastic waste. D. The seriousness of plastic pollution. (2)What is the biggest benefit to people living in the Plastic Bottle Village? A. The house will be much cooler than normal ones. B. The material of construction will be reduced a lot. C. The newly-made house can save a lot of electricity. D. The waste of the house can be consumed by fish and birds. (3)Which of the following words can best describe Robert? A. Creative. B. Courageous. C. Enthusiastic. D. Sensitive.(4)The main purpose of Robert's projects is to A. provide shelter for locals B. reuse all deserted plastic bottles C. popularize the use of plastic bottles D. raise people's environmental awareness 【答案】(1)D (2)A

The new garbage sorting regulation has taken effect in Shanghai starting July 1. Many citizens are still confused about the classification of the four different types of trash. Thankfully, authorities have released an official guideline to explain the new rules. The guideline, published by the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau, provides a rather clear definition on the four kinds if waste: recyclable waste, harmful waste, household food waste and residual (剩余) waste. A team from the U. K.'s National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine examined 14 lean and overweight men and analyzed their metabolic (新陈代谢) health. The participants were either assigned Harmful waste, as the name suggests, includes various poisonous materials like used batteries, light bulbs, out-of-date medicines, paint and pesticides. Household food waste —which is translated to "wet trash" in Chinese —refers to food leftovers, rotten food, pet food, fruit peels, remains of TCM herbs (中药) and flowers. Paper, plastic, glass, metal and textiles (纺织品) are counted as recyclable waste. The definition of residual waste is a little confusing. Anything that is not listed above belongs to this category. As specific as the new guideline is, residents still have a hard time sorting trash correctly and are finding it challenging to memorize them all. For instance, both plastic bottles and bubble tea or coffee cups are plastic materials. However, the former falls to the category of recyclable waste and the latter belongs to residual waste. To save the hassle, some netizens have come up with their own way to sort trash. "We should do this from a pig's angle," commented one netizen. "Those edible (可食用) for pigs are household food waste. Those even pigs don't want to eat are residual waste. If a pig consumes something and dies of it, then something must be harmful waste. Those that can be sold and the money we gain can be used to purchase pigs are recyclable waste." The new regulation came into effect on July 1. Those who do not sort their trash properly will be fined RMB200. (1)What do the old coats that you want to throw away belong to? A.Harmful waste. B.Wet trash. C.Recyclable waste. D.Residual waste (2)What is the common point of "wet trash"? A.They can be broken down easily. B.They all come from plants. C.They all have bad smells. D.They all have poisonous materials.
