In 1944, as a young girl, Marta Ramirez saw newsreels that showed B-25 airplanes flying near a volcanic eruption. Blankets of burning ash were seen smothering the airplanes. Pieces of volcanic rock came falling quickly from the sky. Each glowing piece of rock was like a deadly bullet. Those images never left Marta. She has been fascinated by volcanoes ever since. When she got older, Marta earned degrees in geology and volcanology. She has visited Mount Vesuvius many times. In the following memoir (回忆录), she describes one of her visits and why this volcano still inspires her work.

There is a lot of documentation of Vesuvius’ past. Geologists have gathered this evidence of earlier eruptions by studying the rocks that were formed. Before 1944, the most catastrophic eruption occurred in 79 A.D. Many smaller eruptions have occurred since then, including the one in 1944. Volcanologists believe that another major eruption could occur at any time. To watch for geological changes within Vesuvius, we have set up seismographs ( 地震仪) to measure the slightest shifts in the rock beneath the mountain. During one dangerous but exciting mission, I climbed down into the crater. My crew and I worked on mapping what was going on underground. We also measured the gases leaking from small vents (通风口). Any sudden increase in carbon dioxide and other gases might signal an eruption.

I don’t go into the crater anymore, but I ofte n think about how Vesuvius threatens the environment around it. Today, the city of Naples lies at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. If an eruption occurred tomorrow, the city would not be ready. The only sure way to protect people who live near this volcano is to give them

enough warning. The city of Naples has detailed evacuation (撤离) plans. For the plans to work, however, officials need to be warned seven days before an eruption occurs. I hope the work that volcanologists do will help to give people the warning they need. Until then, I’ll be watching this sleeping monster just in case it starts to wake.

28.What’s the probable meaning of the underlined word “smothering” in paragraph 1?

A. Covering.

B. Involving.

C. Striking.

D. Grasping.

29.What can we infer from paragraph 2?

A.The first recorded eruption happened in 79A.D.

B.The eruption in 1944 was the most destructive.

C.It’s reported that a major eruption will take place soon.

D.Studying past eruptions helps predict the next eruption.

30.What’s the passage mainly about?

A.Plenty of volcanic eruptions took place in Mount Vesuvius.

B.The volcanic eruptions in Mount Vesuvius caused great damage.

C.Marta’s childhood fascination led to a lifelong career as a volcanologist.

D.Volcanologists are doing whatever they can to prevent volcanic eruptions.

It’s party season and many of us will be dancing, eating and drinking too much. After a night of singing to catchy tunes from the charts, many of us will wake up with the music playing over and over in our heads.

He said, “There’s already been some research that shows that if you can find the right piece of music, something that had a very strong meaning, playing that piece of music can be very therapeutic (治疗的). 35 ”

The other most recognizable tunes in Dr. Burgoyne’s study are Lou Bega’s Mambo No 5, Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger, Lady Gaga’s Just Dance and ABBA’s SOS.

With the development of our society, cellphones have become a common part in our lives. Have you ever run into a careless cellphone user on the street? Maybe they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat without looking at what looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new “species” of humans keeps rising, they have been given a new name-phubbers.

Recently a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities (身份) bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes a selfie (自拍) in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A c hain of similar events finally leads to the destruction of the world.

Although the ending of the film sounds unrealistic, the damage phubbing can bring is real. Your health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. “Always bending your head to check your cell phone could damage your neck,” Guangming Daily quoted doctors’ words. “The neck is like a rope that breaks after long-ter m stretching.” Also, staring at cell phones for a long time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report.

But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. When getting together with family or friends, many people prefer to play their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported.

It can also cost your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.

Dear manager,

I’m writing to complain about the poor service your hotel provided. After my family checked in on August 5th, we were annoyed to find there was no access to the Internet and no hot water available after 10 p.m. Worse still, the room attendant was rude when we reported these problems to him.

I know your hotel enjoys a high reputation, but it was disappointing that your hotel didn’t offer high-quality service. I think it’s necessary to improve the room service and get your employees well trained so that it won’t fail other customers.

Yours, Li Hua

The advancement/development of modern society leads to a rising group of phubbers, who are addicted to the cellphones. A recent cartoon film brings them to public attention. Absurd/Unrealistic though the ending of the film may seem, being absorbed in cellphones does ruin your health like your neck and eyesight. Besides, your social skills will be weakened too, distancing you from your friends and family. Worse still, being a phubber may put your own life at risk.

(Text 3)

M: Has Tina come back from London?

W: Oh, she has moved there with her parents, who have found new jobs. Now she’s studying in a new school.

M: No wonder I haven't seen her for ages.

(Text 4)

eat something like this.

M: I spent three years in France as a young boy. I learned a lot of amazing techniques there.

(Text 5)

M: How much are the tickets for one adult and two three-year-old children?

W: I just can't wait to go. My car is being repaired now. I'm afraid we’ll have to take a bus or the subway. M: I hate traveling by public transport. (7) I’ll ask David to drop us there.

(Text 7)

M: Fairly warm this morning, isn’t it?

W: Sure. (8) The air is so warm and everything looks so fresh after the heavy rain during

W: (14) Hi, Bernie! I'm Jane.

M: Nice to meet you. So, Jane, what do you think is the best part of this hotel? I mean, seeing as you’re a bit of an expert and all...

W: Well, I wouldn't say I'm an expert, but the service here is much better than at most other hotels. (16) Considering the price of the rooms here, you might not expect the service to be anything special, but I feel like I am treated like a queen whenever I'm here.

M: I agree that the service is great, (17) but my favorite thing about this place has got to be the breakfast. I mean, have you seen so many choices anywhere else?

W: Well, you have a point there, Bernie. I do love eating breakfast here, and I guess I’ll talk about it whenever people ask me how my trip to New York was.

A Suddenly another thought went through Kate’s mind like an electric shock. An express train was due to go past about thirty minutes later. If it were not stopped, that long train, full of passengers, would fall into the stream. “Someone must go to the station and warn the station-master,” Kate thought. But who was to go? She would have to go herself. There was no one else. In wind and rain, she started on her difficult was. Soon she was at the bridge that crossed the Des Moines River, a bridge also built of wood, just like the bridge across Honey Creek. The storm had not washed this away, but there was no footpath across it. She would have to cross it by stepping from sleeper(枕木) to sleeper. With great care she began the dangerous crossing, sometimes on her hands and knees, hardly daring to look down between the sleepers into the wild flood waters below. If she should slip, she would fall between the sleepers, into the rapidly flowing stream. At last -she never knew how long it had taken her – she felt solid ground under her feet. But there was no time to rest. She still had to run more than half a mile and had only a few minutes left. Unless she reached the station before the express did, many, many lives would be lost. She did reach the station just as the train came into sight. Fortunately, the station-master was standing outside. “The bridge is down! Stop the train! Oh, please stop it!” Kate shouted breathlessly. The station-master went pale. He rushed into the station building and came back with a signal light. He waved the red light as the train came into the station. It was not a second too early. 21. What did Kate decide to do? A. Stop the express train. B. Check the signal light. C. Meet the passengers. D. Visit the station-master. 22. Which of the following words best describes Kate’s journey? A. Fruitless. B. Boring. C. Well-planned. D. Ricky. 23. Why did the station-master turn pale? A. He suddenly fell ill. B. He realized the danger. C. He discovered his mistake. D. He became over-excited. B The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Copenhagen is offering a free meal to man guest who is able to produce electricity for the hotel on an exercise bile linked to a generator(发电机). The idea is to get people fit and reduce their carbon footprint. Guest will have to produce at least 10 watt hours of electricity – roughly 15 minutes of cycling for someone of average fitness. Guests staying at Plaza Hotel will be given meal tickets worth $36 once they have produced 10 watt hours of electricity. The bicycles will have smart phones attached to the handlebars measuring how much power is being generated for the hotel. The plan, a world-first, will start on 19 April and run for a year. Only guest staying at the hotel will be able to take part. Frederikke Toemmergaard, hotel spokeswoman, said, “Many of our visitors are business people who enjoy going to the gym. There might be people who will cycle just to get a free meal, but generally I don’t think people will take advantage of our programme.” Copenhagen has a long-standing cycling tradition an 36% of locals cycle to work each day, one of the highest percentages in the world, according to the website visitcopenhagen.dk. US environmental website https://www.doczj.com/doc/5714261756.html, recently voted Copenhagen the world’s best city for cyclists. “Because Copenhagen is strongly connected with cycling, we felt the bicycle would work well as symbol of the hotel’s green profile(形象).” If successful, the electric bicycle meal programme will be spread to all Crowne Plaza hotels in the UK, the hotel said in a statement. 24. What is the main purpose of the free meal programme? A. To promote the hotel’s green concept. B. To make the city known to the world. C. To attract people to the hotel restaurant. D. To get guests to stay longer at the hotel. 25. How can a participant get a free meal? A. By becoming a professional cyclist. B. By cycling to produce some electricity.

A In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century—most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719— but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steam-powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy(识字) rate in England was under 50%. Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like “By a lady.”Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral, or just plain bad. In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters — from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim— were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens’ greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon(名人堂) of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa. How did Dickens get to the top For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60,000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to1901; today a casual reader might be able to name a half-dozen of them. It’s partly true that Dickens’ style of writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It’s partly t hat his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it’s also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a singular writer. But as the 200th anniversary of his birth approaches, it is possible —and important for our own culture—to understand how he made himself a lasting one. 21.
