(2018·四川三台实验中学月考)The iPhone, the iPad: each of Apple's products sounds cool and has become a fad (一时的风尚). Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i”——and many other brands are following suit. The BBC's iPlayer——which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet——used the title in 2008. A lovely bear——popular in the US and UK——that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmed－down version (简装本) of London's Independent newspaper was started last week under the name “i”．
In general, single－letter prefixes (前缀) have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e－mail and e－commerce (电子商务) first came into use.
Most “i” products are targeted at (针对) young people and considering the major readers o f Independent's “i”，it's no surprise that they've selected this fashionable name.
But it's hard to see what's so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”，“b”，or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King's College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”，no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPad, it seems it didn't have one clear definition (定义)，” he says.
“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated with portability (轻便) .” adds Thorne.
Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.
Along with “Google” and “blog”，readers of BBC Magazines voted
“i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade.
But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was connected with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the fashion disappeared.

Elio Motors plans to make such a tiny car named the Elio. Its two seats sit front and back instead of side by side. The driver is positioned in the center with the passenger directly behind.
The starting price for the car is just $6,800. It has only one door, on the left side, which cuts a few hundred dollars off the manufacturing costs. Having three wheels also makes it cheaper. Now comes a third choice, called Quickwheel. It is designed to get disabled_motorists rolling again as quickly as possible.
Quickwheel is basically a tiny emergency trailer——complete with
three tough little wheels of its own——that supports the flat tire and enables the motorists to drive to a service station without losing much time or expending much energy. The product is made in the US Company, Quickwheel Inc. of Greenwich, Connecticut. According to the firm's president, Robert Bockweg, the product meets each of the major worries that customers relate with flat tires: safe, lost time and physical labor.
To use it, motorists simply unfold the product to its fully extended position, set it in front of the disabled tire, drive the car onto the Quickwheel's ramp (斜板) and fix a special safety strap over the tire. The tire is then locked in Quickwheel's metal frame. Its three wheels do the rest of the work. According to Quickwheel Inc., its product can be driven “for miles” at the speed of up to 45 miles per hour “without any noticeable change in the vehicle's braking or steering operation”. Wells, other equipment, and thousands of kilometers of pipelines must be inspected and repaired. Now, cuttingedge underwater drones (无人机) and robots are being developed that could make the work safer and cheaper. Among them is Eelume, a sixmeterlong, snakelike robot equipped with sensors and a camera at each end. It can be kept at a station at depths of up to half a kilometer for six months, without being brought back to the surface. The robot can travel up to 20 kilometers before needing to return to its station to recharge. Main tenance work at many deepwater wells and pipeline systems is already carried out by unmanned vehicles. But these vehicles typically need to be transported to the offshore site on a fully crewed ship and then remotely operated from the onboard surface ship. That can cost up to $100，000 per day, according to Pål Liljebäck, chief technology officer with Eelume Subsea Intervention, which developed the robot. Liljebäck says that by “enabling the robot to become a subsea resident living at a station, it can be mobilized at any time to do inspections, thereby reducing the need for costly surface ships”． Eelume can work autonomously on tasks assigned from a control room onshore, and send back video and data. Its snakelike design allows it to work in small spaces and wriggle (扭动) its body to stay in place in strong currents. By staying under the sea, it can carry out tasks whatever the conditions on the surface of the ocean. The global underwater robotics market is expected to be worth around $7 billion in 2025, according to analysts, and other companies are in the process of commercializing new deepsea drone and robot technology. Eelume Subsea Intervention will carry out final testing on the seabed later this year at the Åsgard oil and gas field. It expects to put its first snake robots into use next year and hopes to have up to 50 in oceans around the world by 2027. 1．What is one feature of Eelume?
