Thanksgiving is not a religious holiday. But it has ritual meaning. Some Americans attend religious services on the day before Thanksgiving or on Thanksgiving morning. Others travel long distances to be with their families. They have a large dinner which is the main part of the celebration. For many Americans, Thanksgiving is the only time when all members of the family gather. The holiday is a time of family reunion. Thanksgiving week is generally one of the busiest travel times of the year. However, experts say this year probably will be different. On September 11th, thousands of people died when terrorists hijacked airplanes that struck buildings in Washington D.C. and New York City. Many people now say they are worried about flying on a plane. Travel experts say almost 6 percent fewer people will make long trips this Thanksgiving compared

American culture Literature Review Like the Hollywood coverage of the American culture, the culture over …the Holl ywood culture”exhibiton highlighted the gap between scholarly trends and pop ular understandings of history. But rather than make this a cause for lamentatio n or the occasion for propagating a correct view,we should decide to study Am erican culture in Hollywood film further more. For a century, Hollywood, …a district of Los Angeles, California. The principal Centre of the American film industry, plays an important role in the circulation of American culture. It serves as the nation's preeminent instrument of cultural expression. It?s well known for its representation of modern American culture, and attracts thousands of movie fans and visitors every year. Movies offer a wi ndow into American cultural and social history, it provide a host of insights into Americans' shifting ideals, fantasies, and preoccupations.America?s Culture A daptation and adoption from one culture to the next is prevalent within any cult ure and country. When examining the effects of this, finding its original root is key. Oftentimes a country will adapt an aspect of another culture; however it w on?t be preserved and practiced identically given only a few years to be foster ed in its new civilization. America culture in Hollywood is a prime example. Du ring the American germination ,we were known as the melting pot of every her itage—each immigrant internally packed his or her previously known culture. A lthough that was over two-hundred years ago, the American culture really cha nged too much in relation to mixing a little of this and a little of that. Even if Am ericans tried to avoid dabbling in the cultures of countries abroad or even right next door, it couldn?t be possible to preserve any type of American Culture. The most significant of reasons preventing this is due to the foundation Ameri can culture was settled upon, that being of a melting pot. This concept of an A merican culture or way of life is created only because each one of the Europe ancestors arrived with their own religious practices, holiday traditions, and eve n recipes to European Favorite dishes that make the American culture so commonly deem as it in Ho llywood film. Relating this on a more contemporary level beyond the original in habitants arriving from places abroad on boats, the American culture is still as dynamic as ever. With modern technology enabling travel, communication, an d information from one place to the next, Hollywood films create an accessible means to share ideas, beliefs, and values between places on opposite ends of the earth. On an even broader perspective, due to the economic structure o f international trading and developing, each country is exposed to products an d practices of another. Although this concept of sharing cultural components is widespread, the American culture in Hollywood films adaptation patterns are li mited by that very same economic structure. That?s the reason why we should research about the American culture in Holly wood films.

(Major Newspapers and Journals in the U.S.)

Why American Culture is Unique American culture is unique because it is nurtured, formed and developed under certain conditions, which are characteristically(特性)American. The major factors contributing to the making of this new nation and the forming of a new culture are the hard environment, ethnic diversity(多民族) and plural religion, which is quite different from other nations in the world. What is more, these elements are still influencing the American culture. 1. Rough Environment The early immigrants who were English Puritans settled down in northeast part of American. The environment there was very rough but they believed the poor land could purify their mind so they chose the place along the coast. From 1607 to 1892, frontiers were pushed further west. The American frontier consisted of the relatively unsettled regions of the United States, usually found in the western part of the country. The frontiersmen looked for a land of rich resources and a land of promise, opportunity and freedom. Actually they looked for a better life. So individualism, self-reliance, and equality of opportunity have perhaps been the values most closely associated with the frontier heritage(遗产) of American. 2. Ethnic Diversity The population of the United States includes a large variety of ethnic groups coming from many races, nationalities, and religions. People refer to the United States as "melting pot "and the dominant people are British. American is made up of WASP+MM, that is, White, Anglo Saxon, Protestants plus Middle Class and Male. In history, people from different countries in the world rushed to American three times. They brought their own culture to American and later on different cultures were mixed together. Thus the unique American culture is formed, a common cultural life with commonly shared values. 3. Plural religion The fundamental American belief in individual freedom and the right of individuals to practice their own religion is at the center of religious experience in the United States. The great diversity of ethnic backgrounds has produced religious pluralism; almost all of the religions of the world are now practiced in the United States. Christianity(基督教) is the dominant religion in American and Protestant (新教)is predominate(主导). Any individuals are equal before God and they believe they can communicate directly to God so they can share the same idea. Under the protestant, many new ones are formed and different explanations produce different sect of religion. Churches are independent and American religion is no longer religion seculars. The institution permits the practice of religion and the political power is separate form religion. So there are more religions in American than in other countries. 4. Current influence: Nowadays, we can see the continual influence of the three elements in the current

American automobile culture

American automobile culture Nowadays, there is no country in the world like America which has the same car culture. Americans have always cherished personal freedom and mobility, rugged individualism and masculine force. The advent of the horseless carriage combined all these qualities and more. The automobile traveled faster than the speed of reason; it promised to make everyone a pathfinder to a better life. It was the vehicle of personal democracy, acting as a social leveling force, granting more and more people a wide range of personal choices -- where to travel, where to work and live, where to seek personal pleasure and social recreation. To many Americans, cars are the status symbol, and the display of wealth and success. Most wealthy Americans drive luxury cars. In general, the middle class people drive the car which about 10,000 or 20,000 dollars. People who drive cars with rust spots and scars are the poor and the students. Yet despite congested traffic, polluted air, and rising gas prices, Americans have not changed their driving or car ownership patterns. America’s love affair with the car has matured into a marriage -- and an addiction.

Cotton Facts

Cotton Facts Before 1793, it was impossible to make much money on cotton because the seeds had to be picked out by hand. So not many people grew it. But in 1793, just after the American Revolution, Eli Whitney invented a new machine called a cotton gin that could get the seeds out of cotton. Soon everybody in Georgia was growing cotton and using the new cotton gin to get the seeds out cheaply. Tens of thousands of African people were captured and brought to the United States to work in the cotton fields to grow more and more cotton. Most of the people who came to the United States as slaves came around 1800, and they came to pick cotton. “Cotton Fields" is a song written by Huddie Ledbetter (better known as Lead Belly), an American folk and blues musician. He was born in 1888 and died in December, 1949. Texarkana - When surveyors first surveyed the land they thought that the city would be on the border of Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana, so they named it TEX ARK ANA. The song mentions that the fields are "down in Louisiana, just about a mile from Texarkana". As it turned out, this is impossible because Texarkana ended up begin about 20 miles north of the Louisiana border. The issue of slavery was also greatly impacted by the invention of the cotton gin. Prior to this invention, slavery had become less favorable with Americans. Because of the huge numbers of new immigrants to the United States, labor had become cheap enough that many farmers found it necessary to pay. Suddenly, as the gin made dramatically improved ways to produce cotton, the need for labor was made more imperative to the livelihood of those who grew the crop. Larger and larger fields of cotton were needed to keep up with demand; along with the increased production of the crop was the need for laborers to glean it. The influx of immigrants to America had produced many
