Glastonbury Festival

09外5 In Britain music has a long history. People are so crazy about music that there are a lot of music festivals in Britain to share and enjoy the charming music. Among the music festivals, Glastonbury Festival is one of the most out-standing music festivals.

The Origin

Glastonbury was heavily affected by hippie ethics and free festival movement in the early 1970s, and began with the Isle of Wight Festival that features performances by The Who, among other artists. It was right this inspired Michael Eavis to host the first festival here which then called Glastonbury Festival. The festival took place in the open-air on the green fields because of the inspiration from Led Zeppelin concert happening in an open air, and retained vestiges of this tradition such as the Green Fields area which includes the Green Futures and Healing Field.

Simple Introduction

The festival takes place in South West England at Worthy Farm, a dairy farm for most of the year, which locates between the small villages of Pilton and Pylle, six miles east of the town of Glastonbury. The area has a number of legends and spiritual traditions and also is a “New Age” site of interest.

From 1970, Glastonbury Festival is held on the last weekend of June which lasts three days every year except some exceptions which make the Festival cancelled.

Every year when it comes to the hot summer, many colorful touring buses will fill the narrow road leading to the Worthy Farm covering about several kilometers length. However, people just can’t wait to get off the buses and straightly go to the farm burdened the heavy baggage but with the excitement on their faces. When you reach the farm, just look around and you will found the fields have been covered by a variety of beautiful and strange tents---camping tents, Indian type tents, yurt, also some similar to the tree houses ---which serve as their home for the coming four or five days.

If it’s so hot, the travel goers will put off their upper clothes. And even that one is bare doesn’t make a fuss to anyone, because people are all dressed in the all kinds of strange clothes, easern or western, colorful or different shapes. These modern musical nomads give their best shot to compete with each other on the design of tents, clothing exterior, and traffic tools. Some decorate their clothes with fluorescent tubes of different colors shapes, while others are dressed as the future men full of technology. There you can meet what you imagine but you can’t imagine what you meet. Everything is full of magic and so crazy.

The Feature Stages

As to the farm, besides the festival goers from different countries, the stage and some feature signs are also very out-standing and full of creation.

On 1971, the festiv al featured the first in carnation of the “Pyramid Stage” which was conceived by Bill Harkin. The “Pyramid Stage” is built b scaffolding and metal sheeting. Because of the building of the featured stage, the equipment and participants avoid suffering the rain and the wind with Modular Domes.

On 1981, Michael Eavis constructed a new Pyramid from telegraph poles and metal sheeting, which is a permanent structure doubling as a hay-barn and cow-shed during the winter.

On 1995, The Beatles designed a giant LOVE, which had the height of three people’s height. On the Letters, people painted different colors and different things which made the LOVE more beautiful. More interesting, some festival goers just sat or lay on the corners of the letters to cool themselves or feel the magic of love.

And also some other features such as the Stonehenge, the mud stage made the festivals not monotonous.

The Theme and Spirit

After the simple introduction of the origin and the features, it should to the most important --- the theme and the spirits of the festival.

The Passion.Festival goers release their passion and humanity thoroughly. People do things crazy that we are restrained to do by the principles as usual. Some festival goers are just bare waking through the crowded, some are dancing and creaming crazily as if there are nobody else, others just play in the mudding ground enjoying the joy with the nature.

Crazy Music .Every corner of the Worthy Farm, there are the elements of music. Of course, the rock performances on the “Pyramid Festival” and other performing stages are so exciting and fantastic that lead people waving their hands even jumping and dancing crazily. However the Glastonbury Festival is not for the only the performances, but also the interaction of both the singers and the audiences and also the music amateurs, who sing and dance in their own ways in their small stages. They invite the passers-by join them indulge themselves in the music forgetting everything around.

There, as long as you have good idea and take the initiate, everything will happen; there, you are not a culture receiver any more who dances along with others, but the active people who create by yourself.

Nothing-can-stop. You know, nothing can stop them from enjoying music. Nothing! Because of the special place---the dairy farm and the special climate---much rain, when it is caught in continued periods of rain, it’s muddy here and there. For many times, it rains heavily, but as long as there is any room to stand to join the festival, and as long as it continues, they are there. Nobody is frustrated by the bad weather, the smile is still there. That is the spirit of Festival---Nothing can stop them enjoying music.

The Donation. Although in the first several years, it is free. But later people should pay money for the tickets. However, Rock spirit of the forty years, has made the Glastonbury Festival harmonious communication between the commerce and the modern music

Glastonbury Festivals donates most of their profits to charities, which include

donations to local charity and community groups and paying for the purchase and restoration of the Tithe Barn in Pliton.

Glastonbury Festival gives both the singers and the festival goers a chance to release their inner passion. People rush to the grasses and the mud to enjoy the pleasure of music.

An Analysis of the Design of the First Assembly in Pride and Prejudice [Abstract] In Pride and Prejudice, the first assembly is the stage of the debut of hero, Darcy and the heroine, Elizabeth. Therefore, the design of this assembly, including which part of the assembly should be narrated directly in the description of the assembly, how to do with other things happened during the party, how to shape the characteristics and personality of the two main characters as well as other important role on the assembly, is essentially significant to the character portrait for the whole novel. Mainly employing description of language and technique of comparative description, the plot about this assembly is well-designed as three parts, before, during and after the assembly, which is efficient to the character figuring of the novel. [Keywords] character figuring, design, description of language, comparative description The novel introduces the first assembly in Chapter 3, using only half of a chapter to directly describe things happened on the party while two other whole chapter to show people’s discussion on it. By the delicate design, vivid language description and useful comparative description, the description of this party is highly efficient to the chapter portrait of this novel. Before the party, Mrs. Bennet’s worry about Mr. Bingley’s going into the town is showed, which totally reveals the purpose of Mrs. Bennet’s participating in the dinner, again echoing the description of Mrs. Bennet’s saying "If I can but see one of my daughters happily settled at Netherfield, and all the others equally well married, I shall have nothing to wish for." (Austen, 2001: 2) at former plot. In the case, the assembly is platform to looking for sweetheart, love and even possible marriage (Yang, 91). At the end of this paragraph, Mr. Bingley’s invitating his sisters and Darcy leads to the appearance of these important characters. For the description of things happened during the party, instead of using scene description to the setting of the ball or psychological description to the participators, language description organized by comparative technique is mainly employed to mould different personality of different participant. First of all, It can be directly seen that the description of Mr. Hurst’s and Mr. Darcy’s first appearance is put in the same paragraph and connected by the conjunction “but”,

Bartleby

Interpretation of “Bartleby” 2012 English Class, 1204402019, Crush Abstract Herman Melville?s tale “Bartleby”is one of those highly acclaimed symbolic short stories in the 19th century. Bartleby is an exploited worker in the capitalistic prison—Wall Street. To some critics, he is “a Thoreau-like practitioner of passive resistance”or “an autobiographical projection of Melville as alienated author.”1In this article, I am going to concentrate on the dark, ruthless commercial society and its defective capitalist values the narrator wants to reveal in “Bartleby”; specifically, I will illustrate how the narrator?s failure to understand the existence of Bartleby and to help him indicates the limitations of rationalism. Further more, I will also try to explain what does Bartleby really need, and how can people really save him from terrible forlornness. Key words Bartleby society limitation rationalism capitalist values Melville?s “Bartleby”is narrated by the first-person narrator, as he describes himself, is “a man who, from his youth upwards, has been filled with a profound conviction that the easiest way of life is the best…one of those unambitious lawyers who never addresses a jury, or in any way draws down public applause; but in the cool tranquility of a snug retreat, do a snug business among rich men?s bonds and mortgages and title-deeds.” He is quite satisfied with his profitable life. He is proud of himself in his successful business and proudly attached that he was once employed and praised by John Jacob Astor: “All who know me consider me an eminently safe man. The late John Jacob Astor, a personage little given to poetic enthusiasm, had no hesitation in pronouncing my first grand point to be prudence; my next method.”The narrator is a typical business man of Wall Street—the epitome of the increasing urbanized, capital-driven society. The author does not set Wall Street as the backdrop randomly, but uses it 1(journal articles) Y on-jae Jung, “The Poe-esque Elements in Melville?s…Bartleby the Scrivener?”, Foreign Literature Studies 4 (2009), p. 63.
