在做看图作文时，首先要学会看图。这种图画一般在平面上通过线条、色彩、明暗等艺术手段，创造出人们可以直接感觉到的视觉形象和空间形象，来反映生活，来表达作者的某种思想倾向、某种爱憎和他们对现实的评价。
学生在做这类题时，必须根据画面，恰当地运用所学的词句表达一个完整的故事。要审清题意，看懂画面所表达的意思，紧扣主题。防止因对画面的错误理解而走题。有些画面上附有提示，注意仔细参阅，正确使用。
