Assignment: Can success be disastrous? Plan and write an essay in wh ich you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your posit ion with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, ex perience, or observations.

Sample Essay - Score of 6

The power of success can be disastrous when placed in the wrong hands. Naturally, there are those who will always choose to manipulate cond itions to succeed in their own endeavors, not taking into considerati on the lives of those around them. On the other hand, there may be th ose who do not necessarily pursue selfish ends, but simply do not kno w where to take success once it has been achieved, thus resulting in their own self-sabotage.

Throughout history, we have seen success used wrongfully in the hands of the unworthy. Powerful leaders of nations, kingdoms, and empires, having succeeded in gaining leadership, have then used their influen ce wrongfully in achieving their own selfish (and sometimes twisted) goals. Nero, the Roman emperor who beat his pregnant wife to death an d has been suspected of instigating the great fire of Rome in an atte mpt to boost his own political influence. Henry VIII of England, for whom women were beheaded for not bearing him a son, and who is rumore d to have eaten eight chickens a night while English peasants starved. The notorious Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, who carried out the S panish Inquisition. The list is endless. Even in literature, we see t he corruption and downfall of society and mankind as a whole as a res ult of the abuse of success in the possession of those who do not des erve it, as seen in William Shakespeare’s tragedy of King Lear. In t he story, societal order is replaced with chaos when there is a power shift from Lear to his evil daughters, Regan and Goneril. This order only returns to a slight degree when virtue (in the form of Lear’s good daughter, Cordelia) returns to England. Success is hazardous whe n awarded to the unvirtuous.

However, there may be those who are not necessarily evil of greedy in their pursuits, but merely do not know how to handle success. This p roves to be just more disastrous to the individual than to anyone els e, since it is the individual who will then sabotage his own success to return to his former comfort zone. Success is meant to be grown up on, not exploited or feared.

Success, when achieved by the unworthy or inexperienced, is a most di sastrous element. Success is not about being happy at the expense of

those about you –it is about using one’s newly gaine d happiness to improve the lives of others. If one reflects on the wise words of Ral ph Waldo Emerson, one will never go astray: “To know that one person has breathed easier because you have lived -this is to have succeede d.”

Assignment: Is conscience a more powerful motivator than money, fame, or power? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point o f view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examp les taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Sample Essay - Score of 6

As society toils onward into its dreams of the future, the progress t hat accompanies this movement may be tainted by individual motives of avarice. However, as seen in various fields such as art, history, an d science, the human conscience will limit the motivation of greed an d inspire good works for the sake of morality. One’s sense of right and wrong forever impels one to be a decent, thoughtful person.

Such people widely populate the idealistic field of literature. Thoug h novels may be rife with villainous, self-serving characters, only t he heroic and moral personas emerge triumphant. For example, the well -known literary character Huckleberry Finn, from Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, rescinds his claim to a sizable fortune if posse ssing such wealth would diminish his safety. Furthermore, Huck will r isk himself to ensure the security of his close comrade Jim. His loya lty, a facet of one’s conscience, compels him to sacrifice his safet y to ensure the well-being of others, which is more than money has ac complished in motivating Huck. Thus, a person, however fictional, con siders the rewards of acting on conscience to be more fruitful than t o be possessed by greed.

Although such characters are fictional, the same motives of charity a nd morality have inspired numerous people in history to set aside the ir desires. Lyndon B. Johnson, Former President of the United States,

pushed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 through Congress motivated by co nscience and a desire to correct the immorality of racism in society. Though some Senators stridently opposed such a bill, the power of mo tivation by conscience impassioned Johnson to strive even harder to r emain loyal to the American precepts of equality. Such is fruition of conscientious actions.

Though the great figures of history seem out of reach in their statur e, as an individual I am faced with moral dilemmas rather often. For example, I have been offered more weighty positions on the newspaper, but as a rule, I have always refused when there was someone better q ualified than I. Consequently, their talents result in a more improve d issue, thereby increasing the benefit for all.

Therein lies the reason why we are compelled by conscience. Money, fa me and power are fleeting and insubstantial, for they can never mend the integrity sacrificed to obtain them. It is only when we act in th e name of what is right that all of our possible talents may benefit ourselves, our peers, and our ideals.

·To change is to risk something, making us feel insecure. Not to chang e is a bigger risk, though we seldom feel that way. There is no choice but to change. People, how-ever, cannot be motivated to change from th e outside. All of our motivation comes from within.

Assignment: What motivates people to change? Plan and write an e ssay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Suppor t your position with reasoning and examples taken from your readin g, studies, experience, or observations.

Sample Essay - Score of 6

What motivates people to change is a relentless and innate desire for s elf-improvement. Rarely ever has history seen a man or society kick bac k, relax, and say “Well that about does it. Not much else to do here!” Within every person is the potential to achieve greatness in some form; be it athletically, mentally, spiritually. This inherent potential demands that people continue to explore and change both their environments and the

mselves throughout their life’s course. Never should a man be idle for to o long. After acknowledging the changes a man has already made to hi s environment, the pursuit of self-improvement will once again stir within his soul and call him to action. This internal desire, this pursuit of challe nge and perfection, does not prohibit man from being happy with his sta tus and achievements. On the contrary, the device serves more to allow the man to constantly strive for greater change, newer innovation. What motivates people to change is the ongoing need to redefine people’s liv es and identities –to elevate them to higher levels of eminence and succ ess.

A good example of this can be seen in clinical psychology. When patien ts seek therapy for difficulties that have encumbered their daily functionin g, they most often arrive for treatment voluntarily and willingly-they consc iously accept the necessity of therapy and so participate without any dur ess. During the course of clinical therapy, the patient’s concerns, anxietie s, ideas, emotions, and fears are brought to light. However, the clinician does not try to alter the beliefs, feeling, and sentiments of his client; ra ther, he simply illuminates them in order to provide the patient with an a ccurate view of himself. The process, of raising concerns and ideas to t he surface of conscious awareness, is known as clarification. Modern ps ychology is a far throw from the psychoanalysis of Freud’s time, in whic h psychologists attempted to “interpret” pre-and unconscious feelings that had been repressed by the patient. Because clinicians only clarify, and not dissect, alter, or interpret a client’s inner desires and emotions, the c lient himself is responsible for instituting change. If he is to change, he must dictate the course of therapy, and make the conscious choice to i mprove himself. This widely used approach is called “client centered ther apy.” If the client’s ennui or ill feelings are due to situational factors or i nternal designs (as oppose to biological changes that would qualify for a diagnosis of psychopathology (mental disorder)), he must change them on his own accord to pre-cipitate change within himself. The therapist wil l not “cure” him in any way. He alone must answer the call within himse lf to refine and redefine his identity and place in society. This need, of s elf-improvement, also initially brought him to the therapist. He was able t o recognize the disorder of his environment and acknowledge his own n egative feelings. This in turn brought him to therapy, where he was guid ed through a process of introspection that ultimately enabled him to impr ove himself, assuage his anxieties, and right-fully continue on his lifelong pursuit of even greater achievements.

·Technology promises to make our lives easier, freeing up time for leisu re pursuits. But the rapid pace of technological innovation and the split s

econd processing capabilities of computers that can work virtually nonsto p have made all of us feel rushed. We have adopted the relentless pac e of the very machines that were supposed to simplify our lives, with th e result that, whether at work or play, people do not feel like their lives have changed for the better.

Adapted from Karen Finucan, “Life in the Fast Lane”

Assignment: Do changes that make our lives easier not necessarily make them better? Plan and write an essay in which you develop y our point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasonin g and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or ob servations.

Sample Essay - Score of 6

Throughout time mankind has strived to make his life easier. Whether it be through technology, science, or theories of social interaction every ge neration has made one contribution. From the idea of crop rotation to th e cellular telephone mankind has advanced. It can be argued however, t hat not all of these advancements were beneficial. Many times people ar e accused of “taking the easy way out”, something that is looked down upon in today’s society.

Consider, if you will, ancient Grecian Society. With hardly any of the tec hnological or scientific advancements we have today, they were able to produce some of the greatest thinkers of all time. Socrates and Plato stil l influence modern philosophical thought. In addition, these men were we ll versed in all disciplines. They were thinkers, mathematicians, writers, s cientists, artists and much more. Examine some other great men in histo ry. Leonardo Da Vinci was one of the greatest scientists and also one o f the greatest artists of all time, he even invented and drew up early pla ns for the helicopter. These ancient men, without the technology and ea se of life we have today, were able to produce some of the most prolific additions to human knowledge ever.

Now let us examine some men from our time. Bill Gates, while adding i mmensely to the pleasures and ease of man’s life, did so only b y forcef ully destroying many fledgling companies and completely undermining our capitalistic market place. Very very few men in our time are leaders in more than one discipline. There are no scientists/artists or writer/mathem aticians. Men, while being able to more deeply delve into a discipline, ar e now restricted to it. I attribute this to technology. We now have a life outside of our work. A life with computers, cars, movies, and dinner with

the family from across the country. Man-kind can no longer devote him self to his work. He has his work life, and his home life. While a cell ph one allows me to talk to anyone from anywhere, it prevents me from bei ng alone and fully concentrating.

While the internet allows me to look at websites from around the world, it prevents me from doing the work I set out to do. While technology an d science have made man’s life easier, they have not made it better. M an has become less productive and less devoted, partly, as a result of t his newfound ease of life. Therefore, What makes our lives easier does not necessarily make them better.

·A mistakenly cynical view of human behavior holds that people are pri marily driven by selfish motives: the desire for wealth, for power, or for f ame. Yet history gives us many examples of individuals who have sacrifi ced their own welfare for a cause or a principle that they regarded as more important than their own lives. Conscience––that powerful inner voi ce that tells us what is right and what is wrong––can be a more compel ling force than money, power, or fame.

Most parents and teachers tell students the extremely tired clichéof the consequences of following the crowd. It is said that, in order to be a co mpletely individual thinker, one must ignore what others say. Such advic e is certainly true to some extent; unreasonable malice must be forgotte n in order to keep some level of self-esteem. However, as with most ide as, this one can not be taken in absolute form. In at least some respect s, we need other people in order to understand ourselves.

An excellent example of a literary character who could have psychologic ally benefited from social interaction is J. Alfred Prufrock from T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” In the poem, Prufrock de sires a relationship with a woman very much, but he refrains from initiati ng conversation be-cause he fears that he could not hold the interest of a sophisticated lady. Should Prufrock have taken the step to accept oth er people into his life, he most likely would have discovered, as the rea der of the poem certainly did, that he is most articulate. Others would h ave impressed upon him the beauty of his words and his talent for pros e. If Prufrock would have spoken his song a loud, the ladies surely woul d have shown him what he himself did not understand. Since the ladies would reveal Prufrock’s talents to him, it is true that we need others in order to understand ourselves.

The lesson of learning from other’s opinions of yourself extends much fa rther than the song of a fictional character. Two days ago, in an art clas s, my group of students had assigned self portraits due. Most of us bro ught in photographs of ourselves. Nevertheless, one boy brought nothing and handed us all slips of paper. He told us to write a word to describ e him, and when we had done so, he pasted the words on a poster. Th is must have been a revealing exercise for him because, upon the sight of such descriptions as “bitter” and “sarcastic”, he was shocked. In the case of this boy, he had not realized how his personality appeared to ot hers. Though he might not have thought himself “bitter”, his friend’s com ments certainly made him seem that way. The fact that we need others

in order to understand ourselves is clearly shown by this boy’s revelation. Approaches to the Multiple-Choice Writing Questions

Read the directions carefully, and then follow them.

Look at the explanations for each correct answer when you use practic e materials. Even if you got the question right, you may learn someth ing from the explanation.

Eliminate the choices you are sure are wrong when you are not sure of the answer. Make an educated guess from those that remain.

Approaches to the Essay

There are no short cuts to success on the SAT essay. You will not receive high scores on your essay just because it is long, or has fi ve paragraphs, or uses literary examples. The high school and college teachers who score the SAT reward essays that insightfully develop a point of view with appropriate reasons and examples and use language skillfully. So what can you do to write a successful SAT essay?

Read the entire assignment. It's all there to help you. Every essay a ssignment contains a short paragraph about the issue. Imagine that yo u are talking to the author of the paragraph about the issue. Would y ou argue with him or her, or agree? What other ideas or examples woul d you bring up? Answering these questions will help you develop your own point of view.

Don't oversimplify. Developing your point of view doesn't mean coming up with as many examples as you can. Rushing to give multiple releva nt examples can lead you to oversimplify a complex topic. An essay wi th one or two thoughtful, well-developed reasons or examples is more likely to get a high score than an essay with three short, simplistic examples.

There's nothing wrong with "I." You are asked to develop your poi nt of view on the issue, not give a straight report of the facts. Thi s is your opinion, so feel free to use "I," and give examples that ar e meaningful to you, even ones from your personal life or experiences. Of course you need to support your ideas appropriately, and show tha t you can use language well, but remember: the essay is an opportunit y for you to say what you think about an issue relevant to your life.

新SAT阅读真题四

新SAT阅读真题四 Exercise 4 This passage is excerpted from Louisa May Alcott, Rose in Bloom, originally published in 1876. Three young men stood together on a wharf one bright October day awaiting the arrival of an ocean steamer with an impatience which found a vent in lively skirmishes with a small lad, who pervaded the premises like a will-o'-the-wisp and afforded much amusement to the other groups assembled there. "They are the Campbells, waiting for their cousin, who has been abroad several years with her uncle, the doctor," whispered one lady to another as the handsomest of the young men touched his hat to her as he passed, lugging the boy, whom he had just rescued from a little expedition down among the piles."Which is that?" asked the stranger. "Prince Charlie, as he's called a ?ne fellow, the most promising of the seven, but a little fast, people say," answered the ?rst speaker with a shake of the head. "Are the others his brothers?""No, cousins. The elder is Archie, a most exemplary young man. He has just gone into business with the merchant uncle and bids fair to be an honor to his family. The other, with the eyeglasses and no gloves, is Mac, the odd one, just out of college." "And the boy?" "Oh, he is Jamie, the youngest brother of Archibald, and the pet of the whole family. Mercy on us he'll be in if they don't hold on to him!"

Make a claim. 2. Organize your argument. 3. Switch up your sentences. 4. Choose smart words. 5. Use an academic tone. 6. Use good grammar.

In response to our world’s growing reliance on artificial light, writer Paul Bogard argues that natural darkness should be preserved in his article “Let There Be Dark”. He effectively builds his argument by using a personal anecdote, allusions to art and history, and rhetorical questions. (最后一句即为thesis statement) Body paragraph 1: Bogard starts his article off by recounting a personal story –a summer spent on a Minnesota lake where there was “woods so dark that his hands disappeared before his eyes” Body paragraph 2: Bogard’s argument is also furthered by his use of allusion to …

Still they moved on—something better was yet in view; and by a continued exertion of strength and ingenuity they found themselves at last in the passage behind the highest bench. It was a splendid sight, and she began, for the ?rst time that evening, to feel herself at a ball: she longed to dance, but she had not an acquaintance in the room. Catherine began to feel something of disappointment—she was tired of being continually pressed against by people, the generality of whose faces possessed nothing to interest, and with all of whom she was so wholly unacquainted that she could not relieve the irksomeness of

Morrison, “Public Trust in the News.”2009 by Stephen Coleman. 这篇亚太区阅读真题的开头段写得很 insightful,可以广泛适用于不同出国类考试题目的背景介绍或个人观点。我们先来看文章的开头段: The news is a form of public knowledge. Unlike personal or private knowledge (such as the health of one’s friends and family; the conduct of a private hobby; a secret liaison), public knowledge increases in value as it is shared by more people. The date of an election and the claims of rival candidates; the causes and consequences of an environmental disaster; a debate about how to frame a particular law; the latest reports from a war zone – these are all examples of public knowledge that people are generally expected to know in order to be considered informed citizens. Thus, in contrast to personal or private knowledge, which is left to individuals to pursue or ignore, public knowledge is promoted even to those who might not think it matters to them. In short, the circulation of public knowledge, including the news, is generally regarded as a public good which cannot be solely demand-driven. 2、May 2016 SAT Real Test This passage is adapted from John Bohannon, “Why You Shouldn’t Trust Internet Comments.”2003 by American Association for the Advancement of Science. 这是另外一篇亚太区的阅读真题,开头段同样写得很精彩: The “wisdom of crowds” has become a mantra of the Internet age.
