I am sitting in front of the computer. I need to write what I am going to do during the beautiful fall coming up in Vermont. I am nervous because I think that my life at this moment depends on how much I learned in the intensive English during the last four months.

All my life I have been a fighter. When I was 5, I had a very serious convulsion (痉挛) with high fever. The doctor gave the wrong medicine to me, which caused me to lose my speech. The doctor told my mother that the medicine caused lots of problems with my speech. He thought that I would never be able to speak well again or to learn another language.

But my mother sent me to a lot of teachers. Finally, she sent me to Maria. She was a very nice person. She believed in me, and thought that I would speak again.

The most amazing thing was that she taught me to read my mouth. I remember that I spent hours in front of the mirror and tried to repeat every word that I said.

Now, I am studying English in Ver mont. I can’t believe that I am learning another language. But, I am! I am crying because studying here makes me feel happy when I remember what the doctors said to my mom: “She will never be able to speak well again or to learn another language.”

Now, I'm thinking about the beautiful fall leaf that is coming and what is going to happen to me. Just as every leaf is going to fall from the trees, I am going to take every step in my studies and in my life. I try to think about this and be a grateful person.

D. Practice makes perfect.

59. What does the author want to say with the example of each falling autumn leaf?

A. It shows she likes leaves of autumn.

B. Leaves fall one by one and she will make success step by step.

C. Her success is as beautiful as every autumn leaf.

D. Leaves are sure to fall in the end and every thing will happen like that.

B

In Kenya, the biggest threat to the lions comes from human beings. Lions eat people’s cattl e, costing them money. So the people try to kill off entire lions.

Large areas of Kenyan rangelands(牧地) that held lions 20 years ago are short of nearly all wildlife. They have already been destroyed. The decline of the lions is due to the growth in human population and frequent conflict with people, and poaching (偷猎) also worsens the lion’s situation, especially in other parts of Africa. Those who kill lions are rarely punished. In the rare cases of arrest for lion killing, the accused may be released by paying some amounts of money.

Even the animal-welfare groups seeking to protect lions from hunters may place them at risk. Sport hunting is banned in Kenya, allowing lions to live better there than in most other parts of Africa, but the forbidding could also lead to their extinction.

Under current policy, there is no way for people to benefit from wildlife. They get no income from tourism, and the only potential source of wildlife income is prevented by the influence of American and British animal-rights lobbies(游说).

The fact that Kenya is suffering a destructive drought isn’t helping matters. Kenya is experiencing a severe drought at the moment thus driving other people into wildlife areas in search of grazing and water supplies. Large herds of unattended cattle have been reported forming in northern Kenya, moving towards Ethiopia.

Across the continent, the future looks sad for lions. Only strict action on many fronts —policy change, effective law carried on, giving rural people an economic stake in their natural heritage, and a great deal of investment —will prevent the loss of wildlife in Africa.

60. In Kenya, people are killing lions mainly in order to _________.

A. increase tension with the whole family

B. protect their cattle against being eaten

C. earn more money by selling their bones

D. relax themselves and have fun

61. What’s the disadvantage of the current policy about poaching prohibition?

A. Being short of policemen.

B. People rely on poaching too much.

C. Governments make money from poaching.

D. Law-breakers are rarely punished.

62. What do we know of the animal-welfare groups from the passage?

A. Their protection speeds up lions’ extinction.

B. Their work helps protect the lions at last.

C. They call on rural people to raise income.

D. They are making animals live successfully.

63. What should be the best title for this passage?

A. Lions Getting Lost in Kenya

B. What Is Happening to Lions?

C. Kenya Losing Lions So Fast

D. Kenyans Driving Lions Now

There are four primary reasons people go to work part time, including retirees who want more income, parents who want to spend more time with their children, college students and temporary agency workers. Many people enjoy the advantages of working part time, but one major disadvantage is that benefits are rarely offered to part time employees.

Most people hope for health insurance and retirement benefits when taking a job. Traditionally, companies only offer benefits to employees who "work 30 hours or more a week. This is only a 25% reduction in hours, so it doesn’t free up a lot of time for the employee who needs part time hours. Even when a part timer is offered health benefits, they are rarely offered paid time-off and retirement benefits.

Many businesses hire part time employees for the simple reason of saving money. If they work less than a c ertain number of hours, they don’t need to pay for benefits. There are companies that are beginning to offer benefits to part time employees. They began to offer this in order to remain high-quality, trained professionals that just want part time hours. People who only want part time may be forced to take a full time job to get the benefits. Companies that offer benefits to part timers have a leg up by offering more choices to their employees in terms of hours.

Internet search is the quickest way to find companies that provide benefits for part time employees. Many large corporations like Starbucks and Barnes offer benefits to part time employees among other things. Employees are given choices and part of decision making in the business. Businesses that allow employee input are more likely to offer benefits to part timers.

68. People prefer to work part-time mainly because they _________.

A. don’t want to spend more time on work

B. don’t enjoy the benefits of working full time

C. hope to have more money, time and experience

D. only expect to make more friends in their work

69. We can learn from the second paragraph that _________.

A. part timers can enjoy as many benefits as full timers

B. people choose to work because they need insurance

C. part timers often retire without enjoying any benefits

D. part timers often enjoy fewer benefits than full timers

70. What’s the advantage of hiring part time employees?

A. They save money for the employers.

B. They don’t need the insura nce.

C. They have no choice but to work hard.

D. They can also be changed into full timers.

71. The underlined phrase “have a leg up” probably means "_________".

A. have a word

B. have an advantage

C. take a chance

D. have a good time

A mother had two daughters and she loved them deeply. But from their earliest years, the girls would fight with each other. As they grew older, they became total strangers. As adults, they would have no contact with each other.

This caused the mother great pain. Later she had an idea. She decided to write a letter. In this letter, she told them how much she loved them, and how she longed for them to love each other. And she gave them news of herself, and some guidance on how they might live happier.

When the letter was ready, she wrote out one copy for each daughter, but these copies were special. Each copy contained every second sentence of the original letter. So the copy for one daughter had only the odd (奇数) sentences, and the other daughter’s copy contained only the even (偶数) sentences. Neither copy made sense on its own.

When the two daughters received their letters, they were puzzled. If they really wanted to know about the meaning, they should put two letters together, and read them as one. And that meant they must meet each other again in a friendly way.

For long, the mother waited in vain. While for both daughters, there were complicated efforts for them to understand the half-letter. They blamed each other. Each daughter thought she knew her mother better.

Then one day, when the mother had almost given up hope, there was a knock at the door. There they stood. “We’ve come home,” they said at the same time. “We’ve finally put our letters together, and we’ve come to say how much we love you, Mum.” And she reached out her arms round them both, tears of joy streaming across her checks, and welcomed them back home.

72. When the two daughters were young, they _________.

A. had no contact with each other

B. began to feel hatred for each other

C. showed deep love to each other

D. didn't want to know each other at all

73. Why did the mother give her daughters incomplete letters?

A. She wanted to tell them her good news and bad news.

B. She hoped they would ask her for more information.

C. She hoped they would approach each other and make up.

D. She thought she could change their attitudes towards herself.

74. What did the two daughters do after they received the letter?

A. They quarreled with each other again as usual.

B. They reconciled soon as their mother expected.

C. They began to confess the mistakes they've made.

D. They felt sorry for what they had done to their mother.

75. It can be inferred from the passage that _________.

A. love can neither be bought or sold

B. faults are sick when love is thin

C. love should not be all on one side

D. love can make enemies become friends
