第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

从A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

I always felt sorry for the people in wheelchairs. Some people, old and weak, cannot get around by themselves. Others seem perfectly healthy, dressed in business

suits. But whenever I saw someone in a wheelchair, I only saw a disability, not a person.

Then I fainted(昏倒) at Euro Disney due to low blood pressure. This was the first time I had ever fainted, and my parents said that I must rest for a while after first aid. I agreed to take it easy, but as I stepped toward the door, I saw my dad pushing a wheelchair in my direction! Feeling the colour burn my cheeks, I asked him to wheel that thing right back to where he found it.

I could not believe this was happening to me. Wheelchairs were fine for other people but not for me. As my father wheeled me out into the main street, people immediately began to treat me differently.

Little kids ran in front of me, forcing my father to stop the wheelchair suddenly. Bitterness set in as I was thrown back and forth.

“Stupid kids! They have perfectly good legs. Why can't they watch where they are going?”I thought. People stared down at me,pity in their eyes. Then they would look away, maybe because they thought the sooner they forgot me the better.

“I'm just like yo u!” I wanted to scream. “The only difference is that you've got legs, and I have wheels.”

People in wheelchairs are not stupid. They see every look and hear each word. Looking out at the faces, I finally understood: I was once just like them. I treated people in wheelchairs exactly the way they did not want to be treated. I realized it is some of us with two healthy legs who are truly disabled.

21.The author once ________ when she was healthy.

A.helped disabled people

B.looked down upon disabled people

C.imagined herself sitting in a wheelchair

D.saw some healthy people moving around in wheelchairs

22.Facing the wheelchair for the first time, the author ________.

A.felt curious about it B.got ready to move around in it right away

C.refused to accept it right away D.threw it away

23.The experience of the author tells us that ______.

A.life is the best teacher B.people often eat their bitter fruit

C.life is so changeable that nobody can foretell

D.one should not do to others what he would not like others to do to him

24.What is the best title for this passage?

A.How to get used to wheelchairs

B.People in wheelchairs should be equally treated

C.People with two legs are truly healthy

D.The difference between healthy people and the disabled

B

No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the world, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada.

In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people:as we get older, many of us will bee less mobile, hard of hearing or have falling eyesight.

Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others bee disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on,the worse they bee. Some

people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people's attitude towards them.

Disabled people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopping or to work or to visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps,or onto buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers: prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through, so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability, that count.

25.We know from the passage that ________.

A.there are few people who are disabled in the United Kingdom

B.some old people have disability of some sort

C.mental illness can't be considered as disability

D.the disabled have little difficulty, thanks to the help of the government

26.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Even the able-bodied may lose some of their body functions when they get older.

B.There are about 10 percent disabled persons in the UK.

C.The whole society should pay due attention to the barriers faced by the disabled people.

D.There no longer exists prejudice against the disabled.

27.It can be concluded from the passage that ______.

A.we should try our best to prevent disablement

B.both physical and mental barriers are hard to break down

C.we must take a proper attitude towards the disabled

D.the able-bodied people will never fully understand the disabled

C

Recently, I heard a touching story which shows the power of words that could change a child’s life forever—a power that lies right in the hands of those reading this article. Mary had grown up knowing that she was different from other kids, and she hated it. She was born with a cleft palate (腭裂) and had to put up with the cruel jokes of those children. With all the jeers, Mary grew up hating the fact that she was “different”. She was convinced that no one, except her family, could ever love her ... until she entered Mrs. Leonard’s class.

Mrs. Leonard had a warm smile, a round face and shiny brown hair. Everyone in her class liked her. In the 1950s, it was mon for teachers to give their students a hearing test every year. However, in Mary’s case, in addition to her cleft palate, she was hardly able to hear out of one ear. Determined not to let other children have another “difference” to point out, she would cheat in the test every year. The “whisper test” was given by having a child walk to the classroom door, turn sideways, close one ear with a finger, and then repeat something which the teacher whispered. Mary turned her bad ear towards her teacher and pretended to cover her good ear. She knew that teachers would

often say things like “The sky is blue,” or “What color are your shoes?” But on th at day things were different. Surely, God put seven words in Mrs. Leonard’s mouth that changed Mary’s life forever. When the “whisper test” came, Mary heard the words: “I wish you were my little girl.”

28. The underlined word “jeers” in Paragraph 1 probab ly refers to .

A. some diseases

B. some classmates

C. some teachers

D. some unkind words

29. Why did Mary cheat in the hearing test every year?

A. Because she was not an honest girl.

B. Because she thought the test was useless.

C. Because she wanted to win first place in the test.

D. Because she didn’t want other kids to know she had hearing problems.

30. Which of the following words can best describe Mrs. Leonard?

A. Ambitious.

B. Caring.

C. Aggressive.

D. Good-looking.

31. What will the next paragraph probably talk about?

A. How the teacher’s words changed Mary’s life.

B. What Mary thought about the teacher’s words.

C. Why the teacher’s words were powerful.

D. Who cured Mary’s disease.

D

You are given many opportunities in life to choose to be a victim or a creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place. “They” did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering. “They” are wrong and bad,and life is terrible as long as “they” are around. Or you may blame yourself for all your problems, thus internalizing(内化)your victimization. The truth is,your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others.

Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are individuals who might like to control their lives, but they don't let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don't blame themselves when they fail. Whatever happens, they have choice in the matter. They believe their dance with each sacred(神圣的)moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth.

Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart. Victims relish(沉溺)in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others—and even themselves—to feel

like victims, too. Creators consciously choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire not only themselves, but all around them. Both victims and creators always have choice to determine the direction of their lives.

In reality, all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives. One person,on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months, years,or even a lifetime. Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the grief, then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life.

In every moment and every circumstance, you can choose to have a fuller, richer life by setting a clear intention to transform the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are.

32.According to Paragraph 2,creators ________.

A.seem willing to experience failures in life

B.possess the ability to predict future life

C.handle ups and downs of life wisely

D.have potential to create something new

33.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A.Creators and victims face quite different things in life.

B.Creators and victims are masters of their lives.

C.Victims can influence more people than creators.

D.pared with victims, creators are more emotional.

34.The examples mentioned in Paragraph 4 show that ________.

A.strong attachment to sufferings in life pulls people into victims

B.people need family support to deal with challenges in life

C.it takes creators quite a long time to get rid of their pains

D.one's experiences determine his attitude toward life

35.What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?

A.To define victims and creators. B.To evaluate victims against creators.

C.To explain the relationship between victims and creators.

D.To suggest the transformation from victims to creators.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

How to see yourself objectively

Looking at ourselves objectively isn’t easy.36 Here are some tricks I use to get a more accurate picture of myself.

Look up, not down. It’s always easy to ma ke yourself look good by finding people even worse than you. Yes, we agree, you’re not the worst person in the world. That’s not the question. The question is whether you can get better. 37

Criticize yourself. 38 If they’re right to be afraid, the n you need to start by working on that. People will feel more fortable telling you the truth if you start by criticizing yourself, showing them that it’s OK.

Find honest friends. It’s important to find friends who you can trust to tell you the cruel truths about yourself. 39 Some people have had success providing an anonymous(匿名的) form for friends to write down their objective opinions.

40 Since it’s so difficult to find friends who will honestly criticize you, you need to listen extra-carefully when they do. For example, if one friend says the short story you wrote isn’t very good, you might show it to some other friends and ask them what they think .Wow, they all think it’s great! But the fact is that most of your friends are going to say it’s great because they’re your friends. By just taking their word for it, you end up ignoring the one person who’s actually being honest with you.

A. Take the outside view.

B. Listen to the criticism.

C. Be willing to believe the worst about yourself.

D. But it’s nec essary if we ever want to get better.

E. This is really hard because most people don’t like telling cruel truths.

F. And to do that you need to look at the people who are even better than you.

G. The main reason people don’t tell you what they really think of you is that they’re afraid of your reaction.

Dear Mayor,

I have learned in a newspaper that the post office is to be rebuilt.

I hope that the new post office is accessible to the disabled, especially people in wheelchairs. I am writing to give you some advice. In particular, I wonder if you have considered the following things.

Firstly, the steps to the hall should not be too high so that the disabled can go up the steps easily. Secondly, it is suggested that the aisles should be wide enough to allow people in wheelchairs to enter. Besides, the clerk desks should not be too high. It should be easy for people in wheelchairs to reach. What’s more, the signs in the post office should be electronic ones so that those whose eyesight is not so good can recognize the words. Lastly, it is necessary to fit earphones for those who have trouble in hearing.

The disabled should have the same opportunities as the able-bodied people to enjoy the post office and to do so with dignity. I hope my suggestions will meet with your approval.

Yours,

Li Hua
