A mon th after Hurrica ne Katri na, I returned home in New Orlea ns. There lay my house, reduced to waist-high ruins, smelly and dirty.

Before the trip, I ' d had my car fixed. When the office employee of the garage was writing up the bill, she noticed my Louisiana license plate. “You from New Orleans? ” she asked. I “ No charge, ” she said, and firmly shook her head when I reached for my wallet. The next day I went for a haircut, and the same thi ng happe ned.

As my wife was studying in Florida, we decided to move there and tried to find a rental house that we could afford while also pay ing off a mortgage (抵押贷款)on our ruined house. We looked at many places, but none was satisfactory. We ' d begun to accept that we ' d have to live i reduced circumsta nces for a while, whe n I got a very curious e-mail from a James Kenn edy in California. He ' d read some pieces I ' d written about our sufferings for Slate, the online magazine, and wan ted to give us (“ no con diti ons attached ” ) a new house across the lake from New Orlea

It sounded too good to be true, but I replied, thanking him for his exceptional generosity, that we had no pla ns to go back. Then a poet at the Uni versity of Florida offered to let his house to me while he went to En gla nd on his on e-year paid leave. The rent was rather reas on able. I men ti oned the poet ' s offer to James Kennedy, and the next day he sent a check covering our entire rent for eight mon ths.

Throughout this painful experie nee, the kindn ess of stra ngers has done much to bring back my faith in huma nity. It ' s almdissiwoyour worldly possessi ons to be rem in ded that people are

Now let us look at how we read. Whe n we read a prin ted text, our eyes move across a page in short, rough moveme nt. We recog nize words usually whe n our eyes are still whe n they fixat凝视). Each time they fixate, we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span or the visual span. The length of time of which the eyes stop ---the duration of the fixation ----varies con siderably from pers on to pers on. It also varies with in one pers on accordi ng to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text. Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tired ness.

Unfortun ately, in the past, many read ing improveme nt courses have concen trated too much on how our eyes move across the prin ted page. As a result of this mislead ing emphasis on the purely visual aspects of read ing, nu merous exercises have bee n devised to train the eyes to see more words at one fixation. For instanee, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of a second. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point, tak ing in the words on either side. Such word patter ns are ofte n con structed in the shape of rather steep pyramids so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive fixati on. All these exercises are very clevebut it ' s one thing to improve a person ' s ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently. Reading requires the ability to un dersta nd the relatio nship betwee n words. Con seque ntly, for these reas ons, many experts have now beg un to questi on the usef uln ess of eye training, especially since any approach which trains a pers on to read isolated words and phrases would seem un likely to help him in read ing a con ti nu ous text.

A. The ability to see words is not needed when an efficient reading is conducted.

B. The reading exercises mentioned can ' t help to improve both the ability to see and to comprehend words.

C. The reading exercises mentioned can 't help to improve an efficient reading.

The spectacular Victoria Falls links two countries, Zimbabwe and Zambia. It was Livingstone who named Victoria Falls after his Queen and stated in his own famous diary entry--- “Angels in their flight must have gazed.”

Adventure sports and a range of accommodation

The rustic (乡村的)Victoria Fall town--- just ten minutes from the Fall, and on the outskirts of the Zambezi National Park--- has all facilities necessary to act as a base for exploring the region. Accommodation is plentiful--- from low budget campsites to luxury hotels.

And across the border in Livingstone, Zambia, visitors will find a town suitable for the adventure sports enthusiasts with lots of travel and adventure sports companies.

Victoria Bridge--- the third highest Bungee jump in the world

At a height of 364 feet, the Victoria Falls Bridge, completed in 1905, is the world's third highest Bungee jump, though the scream factor is arguably the loudest, making it a great draw-card for adve nture sports en thusiasts. While dropp ing into the abyss深渊),you will be blasted with spray from the thundering Victoria Falls, and then jerked 猛(烈) back to reality within inches of the swirling eddies (漩涡) of the Zambezi below.

How to enjoy the Victoria Falls Experience--- take to the sky 's and the water

Anyone can pay an entrance fee and walk around the ridge of Victoria Falls and take some good pictures to send home, but to truly experience the size and scope of the spray, y'voeu got to get airborne, and there are options--- tame and a little wild: fixed wing planes, helicopters, microlights.

River Rafting, in many shapes and sizes, is conducted on both sides of the Zambezi River, in Zimbabwe and Zambia below Victoria Falls.

66. Which of the followi ng best shows the relati on ship of the followi ng places?

Every one knows we must exercise regularly to mai ntai n good health. In deed, stayi ng physically fit is a big part of our culture. We consider (and rightly so ) that healthy people are attractive people. Since most of us want to be attractive, there is no shortage of exercise clubs, training videos, magaz in es, and books offeri ng to help us stay physically fit.

Unfortun ately, however, our culture does not place the same emphasis on men tal fit ness. Although we admire and love men and wome n with strong and healthy-look ing bodies, we do ' have the same degree of respect or attract ion for smart, educated and men tally healthy people. This is a shame, because there are immense rewards for people who have developed the ability to think well.

If your mind is well trained and flexible, you will be able to un dersta nd a great deal of what happens

around you. And if you are also well educated--- that is, if you understand basic scienee, mathematics,

music, art, literature, history and so on--- you will find it much easier to make good decisions throughout your life. Over the long run.this leads to a sense of control over your destiny and a much better life than otherwise.

People who are poorly educated or who dortth ink well--- that is, people who are not men tally fit see

things differe ntly. Their world is con trolled by mysterious, but ofte n malevole nt (恶意的) forces. Such people live within a system they will n ever master, forced to follow the rules they will never understand.

Although it may not be obvious, most people spend their lives being manipulated (控制)by others. They

are told what to do, what to think, how to spe nd their mon ey, and what they should and should not aspire 渴求)to in life.

In my opinion, if you want to live well, you must be able to use your mind well. For this reason, I want you to be able to concen trate, solve problem, un dersta nd complex ideas, and think clearly and quickly. Such

skills will make it easier for you to make in formed decisi ons, un dersta nd curre nt eve nts, choose good frie nds, man age your money well, make wise Ion g-term decisi ons, and appreciate music, art and literature.

The key to developing such skills is to enjoy learning, and to have the ability and motivation to teach

yourself.

67. The writer of the passage feels disappointed that ___________ .

=Zambezi Nati onal Park

=Victoria Falls

A. some people have not the skill to make good decisions

B. the world of the physically healthy people is controlled by mysterious forces

C. mentally healthy people are not as popular as physically people

A. the understanding of a great deal of what goes on around you

B. the understanding of basic science and mathematics

C. good training in body and mind

D. being able to make good decisions in life

69. The writer of the passage thinks that those who are not mentally fit _________ .

A. live a poor and mysterious life

B. can't control over their life

C. often do what others do

D. enjoy being fooled and ruled

70. The best title of the passage will most probably be ____________ .

Also this improves your speaking skills to a large extent and also makes a significant contribution to your vocabulary in writing. ___74

Actually, I had a problem in speaking English fluently, but as I read, I could improve significantly. ___75 So guys do join me and give food for your thoughts by reading, reading

The countryside takes on a new look both in living environment and mental outlook. Hills are covered with trees and gardens are filled with flowers. Rivers are clean with bridges over them, which makes the traffic very convenient. Peasants are living in the beautiful houses which are equipped with fine furniture. What impressed us most is that peasants are paying special attention to their cultural life. Because they have much money and less physical burden, they have more time for leisure. People look more energetic and younger for their age.

This activity was really a big surprise for us. What we saw in the countryside was far better than we expected.

黑龙江省哈三中2014—2015学年度高三第一次测试语文试卷(含答案)
