Today, roller skating is easy and fun. But a long time ago, it wasp't easy at all. Before 1750? the idea of skating didn't exist. That changed because of a man named Joseph Merlin. As the day of the party came near, Merlin began to think ow to make a grand entrance at the party. He had an idea. He thought he would get a lot of attention if he could skate into the room.

Merlin tried different ways to make himself roll. Finally, he decided to put two wheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skates. Merlin was very proud of his invention and dreamed of arriving at the party on wheels while playing the violin.

On the night of the party Merlin rolled into the room playing his violin. Everyone was astonished to see him. There was just one problem. Merlin had no way to stop his roller skates. Your house may have an effect on your figure . Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you ? Here are some ways to turn your home into part of diet plan.

Open the curtains and turn up the lights . Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating , for people arc often less self-conscious (难为iW) when they're in poorly lit places-and so more likely to eat lots of food . If your home doesn't have enough window light 5 get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.

Mind the colors ? Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites ? In one study , people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room . Warm colors like yellow make tood appear more appetizing , while cold colors make us feel less hungry . So when it's time to repaint, go blue.

Don't forget the clock-or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories (卡路里)per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes, And while you're at it, actually sit down to cat. If you need some help slowing down , turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.

Downsize the dishs, Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one ,total intake (摄入)jumps by 14 percent. And we'll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.

One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap.

On September 11th, 1958, Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying. H I promised you a gift, and here it is.” What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories. I told it over and over how much I loved it!

One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried fbr it. Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as "hopeless”,"pitiflil”,and "dying”,which sounded ominous.

Christmas was coming. H Don,t expect any presents this year." Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. H lf your baby brother lives, that1!! be Christinas enough/1 As he spoke, his eyes were filled with tears. I'd never seen him cry before.

The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say. "What? He's all right?11 He hung up and shouted upstairs. "The hospital said we can bring Richard home!”

"Thank God.”' I heard Mum cry.

From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty; they were filled with love!
