Dear Johnston, Dec. 24, 1848 Your request for eighty dollars, I do not think it best to satisfy now. At the various times when I h ave helped you a little, you have said to me, “We can get along very well again,” but in a very short time I find you in the same difficulty again. Now this can only happen by some fault in your behaviour. What that fault is, I think I know. You are not lazy, and still you are an idler. I doubt whether since I saw you, you have done a good whole day’s work. In any other day,you do not very much dislike to work, and still you do not work much, merely because it does not seem to you that you could get much for it.

This habit of uselessly wasting time is the whole difficulty; it is vastly important to you, and still more so to your children, that you should break this habit. It is more important to them, because they have longer to live, and can keep out of an idle habit before they are in it, easier than they can get out after they are in.

You are now in need of some ready money; and what I suggest is, that you shall go to work hard, for somebody who will give you money for it.

Let father and your boys take charge of your things at home—prepare for a crop, and make the crop, and you go to work for the best money wages, or to pay back any debt you owe. And to secure you a fair reward for your labor, I now promise you that for every dollar you will, between this and the first of May, get for your own labor, I will then give you one other dollar. By this, if you hire yourself at ten dollars a month, from me you will get ten more, making twenty dollars a month for your work.

Now if you will do this, you will soon be out of debt, and what is better, you will have a habit that will keep you from getting in debt again. But if I should now clear you out, next year you will be just as deep in as ever. You say you would almost give your place in Heaven for $ 70 or $80. Then you value your place in Heaven cheaply, for I am sure you can with the offer I make you get the seventy or eighty dollars for four or five months’ work. You say if I furnish you the money you will deed(抵押) me the land, and if you don’t pay the money back, you will deliver possession—Nonsense! If you can’t now live with the land, how will you then live without it? You have always been kind to me, and I do not now mean to be unkind to you. On the contrary, if you will but follow my advice, you will find it worth more than eight time eighty dollars to you.

There is still no evidence mobile phones harm human health, says a major safety review for the UK's Health Protection Agency (HPA). Scientists looked at hundreds of studies of mobile exposure and found no conclusive links to cancer risk, brain function or infertility. However, they said monitoring should continue because little was known about long-term effects. The HPA said children should still avoid excessive use of mobiles.

It is the biggest ever review of the evidence surrounding the safety of mobile phones. There are now an estimated 80 million mobiles in the UK, and because of TV and radio broadcasting, Wi-Fi, and other technological developments, the study said exposure to low-level radio frequency fields was almost universal and continuous. A group of experts working for the HPA looked at all significant research into the effects of low-level radio frequency. 'Relatively reassuring'

They concluded that people who were not exposed above UK guideline levels did not experience any detectable symptoms. That included people who reported

being sensitive to radio frequency. They also said there was no evidence that exposure caused brain tumours, other types of cancer, or harm to fertility or cardiovascular health.

But they said very little was known about risks beyond 15 years, because most people did not use mobile phones until the late 1990s. Prof Anthony Swerdlow, who chaired the review group, said it was important to continue monitoring research.

"Even though it's relatively reassuring, I also think it's important that we keep an eye on the rates of brain tumours and other cancers," he said. "One can't know what the long-term consequences are of something that has been around for only a short period."

There has been speculation about the health effects of using mobile phones for years. The HPA conducted a previous review in 2020, which also concluded that there was no evidence of harm. But there is now far more research into the subject.

Advice on children

The experts said more work was needed on the effect of radio frequency fields on brain activity, and on the possible association with behavioural problems in children. They also called for more investigation into the effects of new technology which emits radio frequency, such as smart meters in homes and airport security scanners.

The HPA said it was not changing its advice about mobile phone use by children. "As this is a relatively new technology, the HPA will continue to advise a precautionary approach," said Dr John Cooper, director of the HPA's centre for radiation, chemical and environmental hazards. "The HPA recommends that excessive use of mobile phones by children should be discouraged."

55.What does the HPA not do according to the passage?

A. It gives advice to children on using mobile phones.

B. It monitors the effects of low-level radio frequency.

C. It keeps an eye on different functions of mobile phones.

D. It does research about the detectable symptoms after using mobile phones.

56.The underlined word “reassuring” in the fifth paragraph most probably means “__________”

A. comforting

B. dangerous

C. serious

D. expensive

57.Why should they still continue monitoring research though there is no evidence of harm to health? _____________.

A. Because the speculation about the effect of using mobile phones is wrong.

B. Because the time of using mobile phones isn’t long enough to tell the long-term effects.

C. Because the HPA should take its responsibility to undertake the task.

D.Because they didn’t get enough safety reviews about the effect of using mobile phones.

58.What can we infer from the passage? _____________.

A. Exposure to low-level radio frequency fields is a common phenomenon .

B. Using mobile phones does great harm to children’s health.

C. More and more mobile phones will be used in the future.

D. Long-term consequences of something must be more serious than short-term ones.

59. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To make people aware of the harm of using mobile phones to health.

B. To arouse people’s attention on fighting against some diseases.

C. To forbid children to use mobile phones.

D. To reveal the truth but arouse persistent attention on effects of using

mobile phones.

Many Chinese high school students are fed up with their parents' nagging (唠叨). They think their parents' high expectations are a burden. But a recent survey found that they are much luckier than teenagers in Japan, the Republic of Korea and the US, who also find their parents constantly annoying. The parents of foreign teens have even higher expectations of their children than Chinese moms and dads.

Sixty-two per cent of Chinese fathers and 66 per cent of Chinese mothers have high expectations of their children at high school age. They rank third and fourth among fathers and mothers of the four countries.

Japanese mothers top the list with 76 per cent having high expectations, while 70 per cent of Korean fathers expect too much of their children. Japanese teens are the most deeply troubled by their parents constantly comparing them with other kids.

The survey of high school students' views of life in China, Japan, South Korea and the US, was held in 156 high schools in the four countries. More than 7,000 teenagers were questioned.

The survey also found that with the smallest burden, Chinese students are the most satisfied with their parents. They blame them less, and also receive less criticism (批评) than students from the other three countries.

However, satisfaction doesn't mean they are happy. Of the four countries, Chinese children are not the happiest at home. They get the least praise from their parents and they don't feel able to express their unhappiness to them.

"Results from the survey show that despite different cultural backgrounds, generation gaps (代沟) exist in many countries other than China. It's even bigger elsewhere," said Sun Yunxiao, from the China Youth and Children Research Centre.

He said that Chinese parents are used to burying their feelings deep in their hearts. This makes their children not want to talk openly with them. "This survey shows that both parents and teenagers in China need to work on communicating and understanding each other."

Besides their family life, students were also questioned about their opinions on themselves and others in the world.

US students displayed more "individuality (个性)," with 88 per cent agreeing that "people should follow their own interests instead of those of others". Koreans were the next most independent, followed by the Chinese and Japanese.

But strong ambition (雄心) is observed in Chinese high schools. Only 41 per cent of high school students are content with "an average living", compared with Koreans at 48 per cent, the Japanese at 66 per cent and Americans at 72 per cent.

64.Why does the writer think Chinese high school students are much luckier than teenagers in Japan, the Republic of Korea and the US?

A. Because Chinese parents have less expectations of their children in the four countries

B. Because Chinese high school students are happy at homes.

C. Because Chinese high school students don’t have s trong ambition.

D. Because there isn’t generation gap in China

65.Whose parents expect the most of their children?

A. Chinese mothers

B. Japanese fathers

C. Korean fathers

D. Chinese fathers

66.The following topics are discussed in the passage except______.

A. generation gap

B. parents’ expectation

C. independence

D. cultural backgrounds

67.Which order can best describe the ambition the students have in the four countries?

A. Korean students, Japanese students, American students, Chinese students,

B. Chinese students, American students, Japanese students, Korean students

C. Chinese students, Korean students, Japanese students, American students,

D. Japanese students, American students, Korean students, Chinese students

While some scientists overlook the existence of a sixth sense for danger, a new research from Washington University in St. Louis has identified a brain area that clearly acts as an early warning system and helps us adjust our behavior to avoid dangerous situations.

"Our brains are better at picking up not obvious warning signs than we previously thought," said Joshua Brown, PhD, a research associate in psychology in the Feb. 18 issue of the journal Science.

The findings offer exact scientific evidence for a new way to form a concept of the complex control processes taking place in and around the ACC, a brain area located near the top of the frontal lobes(耳垂) and along the walls

that divide the left and right hemispheres(大脑半球).

"In the past, we found activity in the ACC when people had to make a difficult decision, or after they make a mistake," Brown said. "But now we find that this brain area can actually learn to recognize when you might make a mistake, even before a difficult decision has to be made. So the ACC appears to act as an early warning system—— it learns to warn us in advance when our behavior might lead to a negative outcome, so that we can be more careful and avoid making a mistake."

By providing a clearer picture of the cognitive mechanisms(认知结构) by which we self monitor and control our behavior, the study is an important step in efforts to develop more effective treatments for mental illnesses. It also provides a new way of understanding inappropriate behaviors that often accompany mental illnesses.

"Our results suggest how injury of the ACC mechanisms can lead to breakdowns in the early warning system, so that the brain fails to stop or control inappropriate behavior ahead of time," said Brown. "On the other hand, in those persons with mental disorder, the ACC might warn of an upcoming problem even when no problem is in the existence."

Known to be an important part of the brain's control system, the ACC is believed to help adjust between cold, hard, fact-based reasoning and emotional responses, such as love, fear or expectation.

68. According to the passage, the ACC____________.

A. refers to the sixth sense for danger

B. deals with obvious warning situations

C. connects the left and right hemispheres

D. sends warning messages in advance

69. The new research is beneficial because it ________ .

A. provides a new way of avoiding mistakes

B. adjusts emotional responses in time of danger

C. helps find better treatments for mental illnesses

D. assists people in predicting and avoiding danger

70. The new research helps us understand _________.

A. why we are likely to make mistakes when the ACC is badly injured

B. why people with mental illnesses usually have so many strange behaviors

C. how the ACC works when something dangerous happens

D. how our brain warns us of failure in advance

故选A。 3.下列有关生物学研究方法的叙述,不正确的是 A. 通过显微镜观察并绘制细胞结构图片属于构建物理模型 B. 运用假说一演绎法验证的实验结果不一定与演绎推理的结论相符

There is no handguns; only one jail of thirty-five cells(狱室)in the entire land---an admirable figure, even for a small country of 313,376 people. There is no army, air force or navy. There is no tipping for anything. There are no large stores open on Saturdays or Sundays. Since Iceland is situated just under the Arctic Circle, there is no darkness in summer and no daylight in winter. But thanks to Culf Stream, the climate is rather mild, with temperatures ranging from 34 degrees to 52 degrees in July. The rules on television liquor and guns are the result of government decisions. But the absence of pollution is due in great part to the fact that Iceland gets its power from the enormous geyser and the thousands of hot springs that come out of the ground. They provide all the energy needed by the country. In fact, Iceland uses only 3 percent of all its available power. Christmas is less than two months away, and little ones are already planning their letters to Santa. But one survey has revealed the weirdest items to turn up on Christmas lists, and they include mythical monsters and mega-selling pop stars. Conducted by GAME, the study also reveals a significant break from festive tradition when it comes to writing wish lists. One in three, 29%, children now use technology such as iPads or mobile phones instead of the traditional pen and paper, while a further one in five (19%) will rely on parents to take note of all the things they point at during TV adverts and during trips to the shops. With more than three million lists likely to be drafted, parents are prepared for a flurry of requests including many that even Santa would struggle to achieve. As part of the study, parents were asked to reveal some of the weird and wonderful items that made it onto their child's Christmas lists. Fred Prego, marketing director at GAME, says: "Choosing what to get your kids at Christmas can be a bit of a minefield(雷区).” As the research shows, most kids will be making note of the things that they want this half term and a lot of lists are going to be written." 21.
