Tim Caro, Professor of Wildlife Biology at the University of California, Davis (UC

Davis) has made it his duty to understand the evolution of coloration in mammals. The

researcher spent twenty years investigating why zebras sport black and white stripes (to

ward off flies) and even wrote a book, Zebra Stripes, about his epic discovery. Now, Caro has solved the age-old mystery of why giant pandas also sport the dual coloration. According to the researcher, “Understanding why the giant panda has such striking coloration has

been a long-standing problem in biology that has been difficult to solve because virtually

no other mammal has this appearance, making comparisons difficult.”

Over the years, there have been numerous theories to explain the animal’s black and white color. Some experts thought that it was to scare predators (捕食性动物).Others believed that the white fur provided the mammal w ith much-needed camouflage (伪装) in the snow, while the dark fur enabled it to keep heat. There was also the theory that the markings on the panda’s head kept it hidden from predators, while the dark circles around its eyes helped reduce the sun’s glare.

To solve the mystery once and for all, the UC Davis team compared the coloring of

diff erent parts of the giant panda’s body to those of 200 flesh-eating species. They

discovered that different parts of the giant panda’s colorin g serve different purposes. As had been previously believed, the mammal’s white face, neck, belly, and rump, allow

it to blend in with the snow during winter. Its black arms and legs are not to keep heat,

but to help it stay hidden in the shade during summer. This is particularly important for panda babies that are often in tree tops and need to protect themselves from predators.

The dark ears help scare off predators, while the black eye parts most likely enable giant pandas to recognize each other and, possibly, show aggression towards competitors.

According to the study, the giant panda’s striking dual coloring may have to do with its poor diet that consists mainly of bamboo, which has little nutrition. Since the mammals are unable to build up enough fat reserves to allow them to hibernate during the winter,

they have no choice but to wander year-round in search of food.

The scientists guess that instead of developing a summer and winter coat similar to

those of small flesh-eating animals, “it(the giant panda) has evolved a compromise white and black fur.”

58. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A. The evolution of coloration in the giant panda.

B. How the giant panda’s striking coloration formed.

C. What Tim Caro discovered about the giant panda.

D. Different ideas about the giant panda’s coloration.

59. Which of the following can replace the underlined part “blend in with” in Paragraph 3?

A. mix up with

B. free itself from

C. match up with

D. protect itself from.

60. Why are the giant panda’s arms and legs black?

A. To make it different from other mammals.

B. To avoid being seen by predators in summer.

C. To keep warm in the winter as black objects take in more sunshine

D. To scare off competitors by showing aggression toward them.

UK consumers spent a record £7.2 bn in 2017 on all forms of music, video and games,

from CDs, DVDs a nd vinyl records (黑胶唱片)to console (控制台) software and subscriptions

to music and TV streaming services. That surpassed the £7.l bn spent by consumers on “printed word” books, magazines and newspapers for the first time, according to figures published by the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA).

The research, prepared by the Leisure Industries Research Centre (LIRC) at Sheffield Hallam University, credits the “dramatic growth” in the popularity of paid-for digital services such as Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Deezer and Spotify as the key factor behind booming sales of entertainment.

ERA Chief Executive Officer Kim Bayley said: “It is an extr aordinary proof of the appeal of digital entertainment services that they have helped home entertainment to hit

this milestone since the invention of the printing press.

“The success of the UK e ntertainment market is ultimately the result of collabora tion between the creatives, studios and labels that produce compelling(扣人心弦的) content and the retailers and services that bring it to the public.”

Dr Themis Kokolakakis from the LIRC added: “The 2008-2009 recession hurt both the entertainment and reading markets. Since 2012, the entertainment market has recovered very strongly, producing record 2017 results.

“Traditional media is under pressure, partly because of the growth of streaming

services, partly because there is so much competition for people' s time and attention.

Entertainment has grown while reading has stagnated (停滞).”

The ERA said the statistics showed the dramatic change in consumer habits as they

shifted from buying physical products to digital consumption and formats.

Five years ago, 80% of revenues were generat ed by “buy to own” formats such as DVDs and CDs. Now 56% of revenues come from digital sources including video streaming, electronic movie rental, subscriptions, online multiplayer games and in-app and mobile

purchases.

Two physical products, however, have bucked the downward sales trend. The vinyl revival (重新流行) is still going strong with sales up 34 percent to £87.7m. Sales of boxed software for games consoles have also made a comeback, rising by 5% to £750m — the first growth

in a decade.

The ERA’s Bayley commented: "Digital services ma y be grabbing the headlines, but physical retailers continue to identify new opportunities to drive sales of discs.

“Vinyl is a prime example of retailers nurturing demand for a product most people

had long written off. It would be foolish to underestimate consumers' continuing affection for the physical products.”

61. What is the main idea of Paragraph l?

A. There are various entertainments for UK consumers.

B. The printing press has to find ways to satisfy consumers.

C. More attention must be paid to the development of traditional media.

D. Revenues from entertainment are more than those of the printed word in 2017.

62. According to the LIRC, what plays a critical role in the increase of home-entertainment consuming?

A. The growth of digital services.

B. The change in people' s consumption habits.

C. The economic support from the government.

D. The improvement of people’s living standards.

63. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 9 implies that _____________.

A. the sales of some physical products have gone up

B. the popularity of digital services falls into decline

C. the entertainment market has recovered strongly

D. the prices of some traditional media have been reduced

64. What can we infer from Bayley’s words in the last two para graphs?

A. It is not wise for the public to ignore traditional media.

B. It is not easy to win the public’s affection for physical products.

C. There will be a rise in consumer spending on physical products.

D. Retailers of physical products have made efforts to push the sales of vinyl up.

If you ever fear that you are already too old to learn a new skill, remember Priscilla Sitienei, a housewife from Ndalat in rural Kenya. Having grown up without free primary

school education, she had never learnt to read or write. As she approached her twilight

years, however, she wanted to note down her experiences and knowledge to pass down to the next generation. And so, she started to attend lessons at the local school — along with six of her great-great-grandchildren. She was 90 at the time.

We are often told that “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” - that the grizzled adult brain simply can’t absorb as much information as an impressionable young child’s. Many people would assume that you simply couldn’t pick up a complex skill like reading

or writing, at the age of 90, after a lifetime of being illiterate.

The latest studies from psychology and neuroscience (神经科学) show that although you may face some e xtra difficulties at 30, 50 or 90, your brain still has an astonishing ability

to learn and master many new skills, whatever your age.

But there hasn’t alw ays been such an optimistic view of learning brand new skills

from scratch as a grown adult. The prevailing, pessimistic view of the ageing mind can

be traced back to the Ancient Greeks. In his De Memoria et Reminiscentia, Aristotle compared human memory to a wax (蜡) tablet. At birth, the wax is hot and soft, but as it cools it

becomes too tough and frigle to form distinct impressions - and our memory suffers as a

result.

Millennia later, scientists’ understanding of the brain appeared to echo this view. Ne uroscientists even use a word to describe the brain’s adaptability, and as we age, we

were thought to lose much of that plasticity (可塑性). Childhood, in particular, was

thought to be the “critical period” to make those impressions. By the end of the critica l period, the brain’ s circuits begin to settle, making it far harder to learn many complex new skills.

Compelling evidence for this theory appeared to come from people learning a second

language. Young children brought to a new country seemed to find it far easier to reach

fluency than their older siblings or parents, for instance.

Yet by analyzing the census records of immigrants, Ellen Bialystok at York University

in Toronto showed that the immigrants’ fluency appeared to decline very gradually w ith the age at arrival, rather than a drop from a cliff predicted by a critical period. And

that may have been partly due to the fact that the children simply had more opportunities

to master the language, with the support of schools and their classmates. Or perhaps

children are simply not so scared about making mistakes.

Just consider the case of Aleksander Hemon. Originally from Sarajevo, he found himself abandoned in the US on the outbreak of the Bosnian War in 1992. “I had this horrible,

pressing need to write because things were happening. I needed to do it the same way I

needed to eat, but I just had no language to write in,” he later told The New York Times. And so he set about embracing the language on the streets around him. Within three years, he had published his first piece in an American journal, a path that eventually led to

three novels, two short story collections, a book of autobiographical essays, and a

MacArthur Genius Award.

Amazing progress is possible in many different fields, and adults may find that they

can make up for some of the deficits with their greater capacity for analysis, self-reflection and discipline. So why not give it a go yourself and attempt to stretch

your mind beyond its comfort zone? As Priscilla Sitienei, the 90-year-old Kenyan great-great-grandmother, put it: “Education has no age limit.”

65. Priscilla Sitienei went to school to __________.

A. learn to read and write

B. prove that she could still learn

C. improve the quality of her ageing life

D. accompany her great-great-grandchildren

66. In Paragraph 4, Aristotle’s theory tells us __________.

A. the younger, the smarter

B. it’s never too late to learn

C. our memory declines as we grow

D. mastering new skills makes one look younger

67. What does the underlined word “echo” mean in Paragraph 5?

A. Confirm.

B. Convey.

C. Ignore.

D. Object.

68. Compared with his parents, an immigrant child is more likely to learn a second language successfully probably because __________.

A. he is curious and energetic enough

B. he is in the critical period to learn a new language

C. he is confident and more interested in learning a language

D. he can get more support and dare to speak the language in public

69. What can we learn about Aleksander Hemon?

A. He was a war journalist from Sarajevo.

B. His works were thought highly of by The New York Times.

C. His absolute determination and the urgency of the situation fuelled his power to lean English.

D. His great success in En glish acquisition proved the existence of the brain’s critical period.

70. The text mainly tells us that ___________.

A. developing a hobby is good for older adults

B. it is easier for children to master certain skills

C. the adult memory declines through lack of use

D. the adult brain is far more active than expected

Caregiver Stress

Caregiver stress is the name f or a type of stress that affects caregivers specifically. The sufferers tend to feel exhausted, get annoyed and even suffer from guilt. If you look after an elderly or disabled relative or friend and you are feeling burned out and depressed, then you might very well be suffering from caregiver stress and should look to get it

addressed as soon as possible.

Caregiver stress is all too common. For most of us, looking after ourselves is stressful and tiring enough. If you then need to cook for your loved ones, help them to get dressed

and take them to the doctor— everyday — you can end up exhausted. Briefly, those who

care for others on a regular basis will be placed under intense demands on an ongoing basis. You might worry about your loved ones whenever they are left on their own. This then prevents

you from doing the things you want to do, causes your own relationships and career to suffer and eats into your free time. There are even financial considerations that must be taken

into account when looking after caregiver stress. On top of this, you might feel unappreciated and be arguing regula rly with the person you’re caring for.

Is it any wonder that caregiver stress is such a big issue?

When you ask for advice from friends and loved ones, what you'll hear most commonly

in all likelihood is that you should send them into a home, hire extra care or get more

assistance from other family members. If you can do this, then you absolutely should, for the sake of both of you - especially if you are much stressed.

But while this advice sounds good in theory, it often is not that easy. Getting care

can be very expensive and some dependents will be resistant to the idea. If you can’t change the situation, then you need to acknowledge that you are experiencing caregiver

stress and take measures to protect yourself. Setting clear boundaries can help a lot;

so you can have honest and frank discussions with your dependent about why those boundaries are there. Find an outlet, whether it be a weekly hike in the woods or a gym session twice a week. Taking regular holidays is also important — and while you might feel stressed

doing these things and your dependent might not like it, it is once again important for

the health and safety of both you and your dependent. If you burn out, then you won’t

be any use to them.

online –order food, shop, hail taxis and even seek health counseling. But with convenience also come risks: By handing over data such as our name, home address, phone number and

health condition to service providers, we’re risking our personal information being

书面表达

While the digital economy brings us convenience, our personal information risks being illegally collected and abused. Fortunately, the people involved in the misuse of personal information were punished and new laws have been drafted.

When our personal information is leaked, our life, study, privacy and interest will

be greatly affected. For example, many of us get annoyed by junk messages in our inbox,

or phone calls from people we don’t know. Worse still, some people’s lives risk being endangered.

As to how to protect our personal information, I’d like to put forward two pieces

of advice. First and foremost, the government must put protecting personal information

high on its agenda and form a special agency to negotiate new laws to fight this crime.

Additionally, citizens must enhance their awareness and be cautious when using apps that request personal information. Only by joint efforts can people’s personal information

be safeguarded and a harmonious society built.

Text 1

M: Jane, do you have a map of Manchester? I want to find a good place to eat.

W: Why not try Chinatown? There are plenty of good Chinese restaurants there, and it's

near here.

Text 2

M: Let's do something different for vacation this year. Oh, let's go to Colorado. I want

to learn to snowboard.

W: Oh, Paul, you know I don't like cold weather. Can't we go someplace warm, like the beach? Text 3

W: This job is for three days a week: Monday, Friday, and Saturday. Are you Okay with that? M: Mmm... I was hoping to have Saturday free. But I need the job, so... can you tell me

what exactly I will do?

Text 4

M: Do you know if John's coming home for dinner?

W: He'll be late. He said not to wait for him.

Text 5

W: I'm really tired from packing all these boxes for three hours. It's about time to call it a day.

M: I know. Maybe we could do it first thing tomorrow morning.

W: Why not? These orders are not urgent.

Text 6

M: Lisa? Hi!

W: Hi, Ned.

M: Don't you usually drive to work?

W: Usually, but not in bad weather.

M: Why is that?

W: The traffic gets a lot worse when it rains or snows.

M: I always take the train. It's a lot faster for me than driving.

W: It's faster for me, too, but the time isn't always convenient.

M: Yeah, but think of all the things you can do on the train 00 read a book or the newspaper... W: Or answ er my email... No thanks! My workday is long enough already.

Text 7

W: I think the car we saw yesterday would be a good deal. What do you think?

M: Yes, but I think you should ask someone to take a look at it just to be sure.

W: My friend Jack knows cars, and he helped me do the check this morning.

M: It was smart of you to think ahead. Have you and the salesman agreed on a price?[来源:学§科§网]

W: Yes, he finally agreed to accept the discounted price I asked.

M: Then have you thought about how to pay?

W: Well, I've saved up enough money to pay cash for this car.

M: Good. Let me go with you to make the payment and drive the car home for you.

W: Thank you. That would make it much easier for me.

M: You're welcome. Let's go take care of that right now.

W: Well, Okay.

M: How do you find the cost of living in the city?

W: Everything is expensive, including clothing, housing, and traveling.

M: So, what do you spend most on?

W: Transport, I think. For food, if I cook myself, it's not expensive at all. For clothing,

I bring my c lothes here from my home c ountry, where they're nice and cheap. But every week, I have to spend more than 100 pounds on the trains.

M: Then what's the social life like?

W: I'm a very social person. I love hanging out with my friends and meeting new people.

Thankfully, I don't drink nor smoke, so the only expense is maybe tickets to the cinemas, club, and so on.

Text 9

W: Can you fix a time for the next meeting, Alex? How about June 12th? That's after the

M: I thought something was happening on that day, Rebecca.

W: Oh, yes. You're right. The people from Head Office are coming.

M: What time does their plane arrive? Can we have the meeting in the morning?

W: No, it's all arranged. I'm meeting them at half past ten, so I won't be available

at all that day.

M: Well, let's have the meeting earlier in June, then. The trade exhibition finishes on

the third, doesn't it?

W: Yes, but we need John's sales report for the meeting. How's it going?

M: I'm afraid John hasn't started yet. The figures won't be in place till next week.

W: Will it be ready early in June?

M: Well, not really. He told me that he will finish them by June 10th.

W: So, we're looking at the week starting the 17th. How about two o'clock on that day?

M: I think that's Okay. Let's meet here again then.

Text 10

W: Hello, everyone. In today's program, I'd like to share a true story of mine. One day,

my friends and I had just finished lunch at a hotel when it started to rain heavily. When

it became lighter, I decided to brave the train to get car and go home. It was parked three blocks away. My friends argued I shouldn't go because at that time, I was due to give birth in three months. I promised I'd be very careful. One of them wanted to come with me, but

I insisted she stay with another friend who needed help with her baby. When I walked to

the first crossroads, a taxi stopped and a passenger beside me and told me he would walk

with me to where I would go. I refused, but he insisted. During our walk, he kept telling

me to walk slowly. When we got to the car park, I thanked him, and we parted ways. I did

not get his name and may not even recognize him now. Did he purposely stop for me? I'll

never know.
