Phyllis Wheatley is regarded as America’s first black poet. She was born in Senegal, Africa in about 1753 and brought to America at about the age of seven. John and Susannah Wheatlev bought her for three pounds at a slave market in

Boston in 1761. Phyllis was soon accepted as one of the family, which included being raised and educated with the Wheatley’s twin 15-year-old children, Mary and Nathaniel. At that time, most females, even from better families, could not read and write, but Mary was probably one of the best educated young women in Boston. Mary wanted to become a teacher, and in fact, it was Mary who decided to take charge of Phvllis’s education. Phyllis soon showed her remarkable talents. At the age of twelve she was reading the Greek and Latin classics.

At the age of thirteen, Phyllis wrote her first poem. She became a Boston sensation(引起轰动的人物)after she wrote a poem on the death of the preacher (传教士)George Whitfield in 1770. It became common to read Phyllis Wheatley’s poetty in polite society. Mary had tried to interest publishers in Phyllis’s poems, but once they heard she was a Negro they weren’t interested.

Then in 1773 Phyllis went with Nathaniel, who was now a businessman, to London. Thirty nine of her poems were published in London as Poems on Various Subjects. It was the first book published by a black American. In 1775 Phyllis wrote a poem about George Washington and sent it to him. He responded by praising her talents and inviting her to visit his headquarters. After both of her benefactors(恩人)died in 1777 and in 1778, Phyllis was freed. One student skipped class and then sent the professor an e-mail asking for copies of her teaching notes. Another explained that she was late for a Monday class because she was recovering from drinking too much at a wild weekend party.

At colleges in the US, e-mail has made it easier to reach professors. But many say it has made them too easy to get in contact, removing boundaries(分界线)that traditionally kept students at a healthy distance.

These days, professors say, students seem to view them as available around the clock, sending a steady stream of informal e-mails.

“The tone that they take in e-mails is pretty astonishing,”said Michael Kessler, an assistant dean at Georgetown University. “They’ll order you to help:‘I need to know this .’”

“There’s a fine balance between meeting their needs and at the same time maintaining a level of legitimacy(合乎情理)as an instructor who is in charge.”

Christopher Dede, a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, said e-mails show how students no longer respect their professors, perhaps because they realize that professors’ expertise(专门知识)could rapidly become outdated.

“The respect was driven by the belief that professors were all-knowing sources of deep knowledge,” Dede said, and that belief has weakened.

College students say e-mail makes it easier to ask questions and helps them learn. But they seem unaware that what they write in e-mails could have negative effects on them, said Alexandra Lahav, an associate professor of law at the University of Connecticut.

She recalled an e-mail message from a student saying that he planned to miss classes, so he could play with his son. Professor Lahav not respond. “Students don’t understand that what they say in e-mails can make them seem unprofessional,” she said.

The legal limit for driving after drinking alcohol is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood, when tested. But there is no sure way of telling how much you can drink before you reach this limit. It varies with each person depending on your weight, your sex, if you’ve just eaten and what sort of drinks you’ve had. Some people might reach their limit after only about three standard drinks.

In fact, your driving ability can be affected by just one or two drinks Even if you’re below the legal limit, you could still be taken to court if a police officer thinks your driving has been affected by alcohol. It takes about an hour for the body to get rid of the alcohol in one standard drink. So, if you have a heavy drinking session in the evening, you might find that you’re still over the legal limit early in the morning. In addition, if you’ve had a few drinks at lunch time, another one or two drinks in the early evening may well put you over the legal limit.

In a test with professional drivers, the more alcoholic drinks they had had, the more certain they were that they could drive a test course through a set of moveable post s…and the less able they were to do it! So the only way to be sure

you’re safe is not to drink at all.

Alcohol is a major cause of road traffic accidents. One in three of the drivers killed in road accidents have levels of alcohol which are over the legal limit, and road accidents after drinking are the biggest cause of death among young men.

It is important to remember that driving after you have been drinking doesn’t just affect you. If you’re involved in an accident, it affects a lot of other people as well, not least the person you might kill or injure.

64.The amount of alcohol a person can drink before reaching the legal limit .

A.is 80 milligrams of pure alcohol

B.is about three standard drinks

C.is different for different people

D.mainly depends on his body weight

65.You will be taken to court by the police .

A.when you drive a vehicle after drinking alcohol

B.when you have had at least three drinks

C.only when tests show you have more than enough alcohol

D.when the police suspect you are sort of drunk from the way you drive. 66.According to the text, which of the following is NOT true?

A.After a few drinks at noon, another one or two drinks late in the afternoon may put you over the legal limit.

B.The more alcohol the drivers have, the more likely they are to pass the driving test.

C.If you have had a standard drink, you may drive an hour later.

D.If you want to drive safely, you had better not drink at all.

67.This article urges you to remember that if you drive after drinking .

A.you may be taken to court by the police

B.you are putting yourself in danger

C.you may kill or hurt another road-user

Politicians generally believe that economic growth makes a nation happier. But maybe they’re wrong.

An opinion piece from the UK’s Financial Times newspaper last week says “today there is much statistical and laboratory evidence in favor of a new theory: once a country has filled its storerooms, there is no point in that nation becoming

richer.”

“First, surveys show that the industrialized nations have not become happier over time. UK citizens today report the same degree of psychological well-being with their lives as did their parents and grandparents.”

Second, using more formal measures of mental health, rates of depression in countries such as the UK have increased. Third, in the US, even though real income levels have risen, the suicide rate is the same as in the year 1900.

“Some scholars have come up with strong evidence about why growth does not work.

Relative happiness!

“One reason is that humans are creatures of comparison. Happiness levels depend on the earnings levels of a person’s neihbors. It is relative income that matters: when everyone in a society gets wealthier. average well-being stays the same.

“A further reason is the fact that experiences wear off. Some researchers believe that after a pay rise people get used to greater income and eventually return to their original happy or unhappy state.

“A final reason is that human beings are bad at judging what will make them happy. In laboratory settings, people systematically choose the wrong things for themselves.”

68.The UK’s Financial Times newspaper .

A.performed an experiment on people’s emotions

B.introduced a new theory challenging traditional idea

C.raised some questions on how to become happier

D.produced a new theory to attract the public’s attention

Quebec City, March 29, 2006-The less a child sleeps, the more likely he or she is to become overweight, according to researchers from Universite Laval’s Faculty of Medicine in an article published in the latest edition of the International Journal of Obesity(肥胖).The risk of becoming overweight is 3.5 times higher in children who get less sleep than in those who sleep a lot, according to researchers Jean-Philippe Chaput, Marc Brunet, and Angelo Tremblay.

These results come from data collected among 422 grade school students aged 5 to 10. The scientists measured the weight, height, and waist size of each participant. Information on the children’s lifestyle was gained through phone interviews their parents.

The researchers found that 20% of the boys and 24% of the girls were overweight. Children who slept less than 10 hours a night were 3.5 times more at risk of being overweight than those who slept 12 or more hours. No other factors analyzed (分析)in the study-parental obesity, parents’ level of education, family income, time spent in front of the TV or computer, regular physical activity -had as much of an effect on obesity than time spent sleeping.

Hormone(荷尔蒙)production is the researchers’ main point to explain the relationship between sleep and obesity. “Lack of sleep lowers the level of a hormone that stimulates metabolism(促进新陈代谢)and decreases hunger. In addition, short nights of sleep cause the concentration of a hormone that increases hunger,” explains Professor Angelo Tremblay.

“It’s ironic that part of the solution to obesity might lie in sleep. According to this study’s results, my best advice against obesity in children would be to encourage them to move more and to make sure they get enough sleep,”concludes Tremblay.

72.According to the passage, children’s obesity has nothing to do with .

A.whether their parents are overweight

B.how long they usually sit in front of the TV or computer

C.what kind of education their parents receive

D.the way in which the children sleep

73.According to the study, lack of sleep won’t .

A.reduce a kind of hormone which can decrease hunger

B.gather a kind of hormone which can increase hunger

C.make you so sick that you don’t have a good appetite(胃口)

D.result in putting on weight more easily

74.The reason why the number of obesity nowadays doubled is closely related to A.the lack of physical exercise of the children

B.the heavy burden shouldered by children on their studies

C.the average night of sleep for children lost one to two hours

D.the development of high-tech in medicine

75.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Children who sleep less are more likely to be overweight.

B.A research on how overweight progresses.

第一节阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15)

Life is so full of questions. So is science.

Scientists have had so many great accomplishments and our knowledge about the world has grown a great deal, but there is still a lot that we don’t know yet.

USA’s Science magazine is carrying a special report on 125 important unanswered scientific questions. They range from the nature of the universe to the nature of societies. Some will drive scientific research for a long time until next century, but others . Many will lead to new questions.

“The process of trying to figure out what we don’t know just keeps on giving

scientists new questions. So, scientists’ job is never done,” said the editor.

Below are a few of the most pressing questions:

Are we alone in the universe?

Alone in all that space? Not likely. The real big question is when, if ever, we’ll have the power to reach out and touch such intelligence. With a bit of luck, it could be in the next 25 years.

How much can the human lifespan(寿命)be extended?

Lifespan extension in species such as mice has made some scientists believe that humans will hit beyond 100 or 110 years of age. Others say humans’ lifespan may be far more limited.

What can replace expensive oil? And when?

Whether alternative(替代的)energy sources will be found in time to avoid an energy crisis depends in part on the importance given to energy research. It will require a global political agreement on what science is telling us.

76.What is the best title of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)

77.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?

While scientists are working hard to answer those scientific questions, more questions will appear.

Module 1 When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a path. In the east, the sky was becoming light. I knew it was there, but there was nothing to see. After about a mile, a stranger appeared in front of me. “Am I going the right way?” I asked. He knew where I was going. “Yes,” he replied. “you’ll get there in five minutes.” Finally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked over them, but it was silent and there was no sign of it. Suddenly, the clouds cleared and the rain stopped. The sun rose behind me and beyond the rocks. I saw that the ground fell away and down to a river, far below me. I was looking across the Grand Canyon, one of the wonders of the natural world. I looked down to the Colorado River, from here a silver stream nearly one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildings in the world on top of the each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still wouldn’t reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. How far is it? It’s about fifteen miles, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away, about 277 miles long. The Grand Canyon is not just big. It’s huge! I remained by the canyon for about half an hour, and I asked myself, “Is the Grand Canyon the greatest wonder anywhere in the natural world?” I certainly know the answer. But what do you think? Module 2 Thanksgiving is an American festival. People give thanks for their food. It’s celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November and it’s a time for a special dinner among family and friends. We’ve celebrated the festival since the first pioneers from England arrived in America by ship in the seventeenth century. While they were crossing the Atlantic, many people died, and after they landed, their first winter was worse than any English winter. The local people, the Native Americans, taught the pioneers how to grow corn, catch fish and keep cows, sheep and hens. The following year they celebrated together by eating a dinner of the new food. We still celebrate Thanksgiving today with a traditional dinner. The kitchen is the most crowded room in our house because we all help to prepare the food there. We lay the table, then before we begin dinner, my father gives praise for the food, so we remember where the festival comes from. We usually eat too much, but it’s only once a year! We often listen to speeches and tell stories after dinner as well. When it’s all over everyone helps wash the dishes.

Therefore, the author suggests taking steps to reduce non-degradable packaging. It is a very common fact that a small item is contained in a large box, with layers and layers of materials wrapping around it. Of course the practice does a lot of harm to our earth. First of all, it consumes too much of our limited resources. When these packaging materials are torn open, they become useless waste in most cases. Besides, too much packaging will cost consumers more money when they check out in markets. Therefore, producers ought to wrap their products in environment-friendly ways. Green and recyclable materials should be used as packaging materials. As far as individuals are concerned, we are supposed to go shopping with our cloth bags or other recyclable bags or baskets.

The festival is a very busy time for travel when friends and families come together to celebrate. After we finish the Thanksgiving Day festival, there are plenty of other things to see and do. We live in New York City, and we go to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, along with thousands of people as it goes along several streets and finishes at the famous Macy’s Store. Thanksgiving is also the start of the Christmas season, and we start shopping for presents. Football is also important at Thanksgiving, with many teams playing games. Like many Americans, we usually watch the games on television and enjoy ourselves very much.
