Literature Review

Many people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, actually this book is an illustration of the society at that time. The author Jane Austen perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at that time and demonstrated her own views towards love and marriage, that is marriage should based on both money and love, while the latter enjoys the more important position.

Pride and Prejudice is one of the masterpieces of Jane Austen. This work selects material from daily life and vividly reflects the conservative and occlusive British town life and world during the period between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century. It is different from other literature work at that time, during when the sentimental novels and artificial method were popular in society. Pride and Prejudice not only attracted plenty of readers at that time, but also gave the readers a unique art experience at present.

This thesis combines the writing background, the British gentry culture at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and discuss the four kinds of attitudes towards love in Pride and Prejudice, then describe author’s view of love and marriage. The author believes that love and marriage are interrelated with property and social status, but love and marriage do not only depend on these two aspects. The correct marriage should be established on the basis of mutual love and mutual respect. She opposes marriage for money, also opposes hasty marriage, and stresses the importance of emotional factors in marriage.

In the novel Pride and Prejudice, the author describes four love stories of young men and women and clearly expressed her views on love and marriage through comparison, identification and judgment. The marriage arrangements between Jane and Bingley, Elizabeth and Darcy fiercely criticize the social phenomenon of the concept of the institution of marriage and the family status, so that people seem to have heard women demanding an independent personality and the earnest voice for equal rights. The arrangement of the combination between Charlotte and Collins

mercilessly ridicules women who treated marriage as the meter making compromises of food and clothing, holding the concept of fatalistic marriage. Through the marriage of Lydia and Wickham, the author expresses her contempt to marriage for moment erotic and impulse. Jane Austin has repeatedly stressed that the mercenary marriage is never desirable, and the marriage without love will not be happy. Her forethought and boldness rarely can be compared. The current institution of marriage pays more attention on the perfect match, status and wealth, which acts as a great obstacle to the conclusion of a happy marriage between young men and women. This social issue can not be ignored.

In the novel Pride and Prejudice, the author does not take the simple frontal attack to approach this serious social problem, but in a roundabout way for side attack. The language of this book is witty, but it is a ruthless character behind a gentle appearance. British literary critic Andrew Cecil Bradley said: "Jane Austen has two distinct tendencies. She is a moralist and a humorist. These two tendencies tend to mix up together, even fully integrated."

Austen’s marital morality has important social and historical significance. It lashes the immoral view on marriage, which is based on money, status, and all kinds of ugly behavior influenced by this concept. At the same time, it emphasizes the independence and dignity of women on the marital problems. Austen emphasizes marriage must be based on love, which is consistent with the spirit of Engels: "Only the love-based marriage is ethical".

As an female novelist, Jane Austen expressed her rejection of marriage funded on money and social status. To a large extend, women married not husbands, but the money. That is the sadness of women at time. In this novel, the author clearly demonstrated her point of view toward love and marriage, that is only combined economic situation and mutual love can bring happiness to marital life. By description and discussion of these four kinds of love patters, it is easily to see that the author strongly appreciates the marriage funded on mutual understanding and true love, but satires the marriage based on desire and lure. Only true love can bring happiness to marital life. it is also suitable in today’s soci ety.

In modern era, women have an improved situation in society and they can choose husband by themselves. Nowadays, marriage for women are no longer the way to survive, but the way the achieve their marital desire. But that not means the novel Pride and Prejudice has no use for us. On the contrary, this novel still possesses an important status in people’s mind. Because every woman are longing for the marriage between Elizabeth and Darcy, and the independent character of modern women gives them chances to achieve. People read this novel, imagining the beautiful love between Elizabeth and Darcy, hoping that one day this can be achieved in their own life. While the most important thing for readers is that they can feel the pure love in it, which gives them confidence and encouragement to pursue their own desirable marriage.

In face of marriage, people always have their own choice to make their own judgments, intending to make plans for later life. In modern society, people indulge in passion and pursue momentary happiness like Lydia and Wickham, or be content with the status and position, like Charlotte to live a boring life, or daring to pursue their love and struggle to the establishment of happy family, like Elizabeth and Darcy? Different people have different views, but no matter how to choose, people will have their own reasons. It may be the eternal topic left by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

Introduction

Jane Austen (1775-1817), born in Steventon, Hampshire, England, died when she was only 42 years old and never married. But in her brief but brilliant life, she created six realism novels which were popular all over the world. Pride and Prejudice is one of them and is included in the World's Top Ten Novels. It is easy to see the great charm of this novel.

Generally speaking, Jane Austen was a writher of the 18th-century, although she lived mainly in the 19th century. As a realistic writer, she believed that it is her duty to express a discriminated and serious criticism of life in her works, and expose the follies and illusions of mankind. She showed contemptuous feelings towards snobbery, stupidity, worldliness and vulgarity through subtle satire and irony. As for style, she was a advocator of neoclassicism, upholding those traditional ideas of order, proportion, reason and gracefulness in the novel writing.

Austen's literary works mainly concerned about human beings in their personal relationships. Because of this, her novels had a great significance among the world. It is her conviction that a man's relationship to his wife and children is at least as important as his concerns about his belief and career. It can reveal his moral quality accurately and truthfully. If one wants to know about a man's talents, one should see him at work; but if one wants to know about his nature and temper, one should see him at home. Austen shows a human being not at moments of crisis, but in the most trivial incidents of everyday life.

The arrangement of the combination between Charlotte and Collins mercilessly ridicules women who treated marriage as the meter making compromises of food and clothing, holding the concept of fatalistic marriage. Through the marriage of Lydia and Wickham, the author expresses her contempt to marriage for moment erotic and impulse. Jane Austin has repeatedly stressed that the mercenary marriage is never desirable, and the marriage without love will not be happy. Her forethought and boldness rarely

can be compared.

These two tendencies tend to mix up together, even fully integrated." [1]

Chapter 1. Writing Background

A. Squire Culture in Northern England between the End of 18th Century and the Beginning of 19th Century

During the period between late 18th century and early 19th century, Europe underwent a series of political, economic and social events: the French Revolution, the War in Europe, the Industrial Revolution, and so on. In turbulent times, the country where Austen lived, still remained relatively stable, and the majority of the population were still engaged in traditional agricultural labor and handwork. But later, the machine gradually replaced the manual labor, and the system of economic activity tended to emphasis on efficiency, division of labor and organization of the process of production, which had changed the traditional pattern. The extension of rail, road and canal provided favorable conditions for acceleration of movements of social and population, and the city was emerging and gradually into scale.[2] Industrialization not only promoted the production organization to continue to divide, but also made the job market more diversified, along with the social structure began to integrate and restructure, and the modern bourgeois’ political and economic base were formed. However, the emergence of a new economic factors or institution inevitably required the spiritual level updated accordingly, and called for the pursuit of life and values, eventually leading to the conflict of the original human coordinate.

The opening sentence in Pride and Prejudice is “It is a truth universally acknowledg ed, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”[3] This well-known sentence vividly reflects the popular concept of marriage in British middle-class male--the rich man must be married, while to get married you have to have money. In 19th-century, British social and cultural realities determined people in marriage must take property into account. In this day and age, women were, whether in economic, social or family status attached to the male, and strict social hierarchy resulted in marital stressing good match.

“At that time, according to the social conditions in Britain, a good marriage for a young woman was critical. This phenomenon was closely associated with the British society and the

status of women in the society. In the 19th century, women were not well respected compared with the ones in the present society. There was no equality between woman and man. Women were considered to be inferior to men in terms of intelligence and capacity. The central life of women was forced to be staying at home; their roles were to deal with the family affairs, such as taking care of the children and serving for the husband.”[4]

Like Elizabeth, a knowledgeable woman originated in middle-class but meager property, in order to obtain a decent standard of living and status, the only way is to marry a good man. As Austen wrote: "A single man of large fortune, four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!"[3] Marriage is a way for people to seek economic security and social status. In this novel, the Bennet couple deliberately find rich men for their daughters, and arrange their nephew to pick one of their daughters for marriage. All of these episodes reflect the close contact between marriage and money at that time. Marriage is like a market, while young women are like commodities for men to select. In terms of marriage, money is more important than the feelings of love. A western critic once said:

“Even David Richard (a British economist) had an unlikely clearly understanding about the function of money in daily life than Jane Austen did.”[4]

B. Marital Status of the Author Jane Austen

Jane Austen had created so many beautiful love stories, but how was her love situation then? In her 42 years life, her marital life is a blank, but she had traveled a love course filled with sweet and bitter.

From the time point of view, the process of her love course was quite closely linked with the creation of this novel Pride and Prejudice. She created First Impression, which was the blueprint of Pride and Prejudice, when she was only 21 years old, the same age with her preference heroine Elizabeth. In this year, she fell in love with a young Irish man, Tom Lefroy. However, the priest family of Jane Austen hoped the future son-in-law had enough economic

strength, while at that time Lefroy was a poor boy. Meanwhile, the Lefroys who had six children insisted on the marriage to a rich family, thus requiring Lefroy to return to Ireland. From then on, they had never meet each other again. That year, in the letter Austen wrote to her sister Cassandra, she expressed her deep sadness and sorrow, “Finally, this day came. I will bid farewell to Tom Lefroy. When you receive this letter, it is all over now. Thinking of this, I can not help tears.” Later, Tom Lefroy married a young lady from a rich, noble family and became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ireland. Until his late years, he admitted to his nephew that he had a young love story between writers.

In 1801, when she was 26 years old, she fell in love with a handsome youth in Bath, and their emotion was very strong, but unfortunately this young man died from a sudden attack of serious illness.

In 1802, 27-year-old Austin (the same age with Charlotte in this novel) met a Manor heir with production who proposed to her. After a long sleepless night, she adamantly refused in the next morning.

When she was 33 years old in 1808, she almost agreed to marry a middle-aged priest, but with no further specifics. Jane Austen rewrite Pride and Prejudice when she was 35 to 37 years old (1801-1812) and published this novel in 1813. Puppy love from the age of 21 to heart-to-heart love in 33 years old, the author went through her most beautiful life, but failed to find the happiest life partner and finally gave up her love’s real home. At the same time, it also achieved her most important work Pride and Prejudice. After all this, the author reviewed her love course from a view of mature female. She borrowed a few of middle-class women to perform all sorts of feelings and marriage that have been and may appear during the 12 years, to express her thought of marriage at that time.

Chapter 2. Four Love Patterns in the Novel

Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is about love between men and women. Although male and female in the vast majority of scenes can perform the love in the eyes of Jane quite perfect, after all, Elizabeth does not have Jane’s kind of woman feelings, and Darcy is not as cute as Bingley's. In this novel, four pairs of couple reveal love between men and women from a variety of aspects.

“Darcy and Elizabeth’s love and marriage is the main theme of this work. After undergoing many setbacks, Darcy’s arrogance and Elizabeth’s prejudice eventually eliminates, the lovers finally get ma rried. The marriage of Elizabeth’s sister Jane and Darcy’s friend Bingley is another clue. They deeply love each other, but they are many things hinder between them. After their departure, Jane misses Bingley very much. The two marriages reflects another point of view in positive way that marriage should be based on true love, which is the ideal marry in the author’s opinion. The stories seem to be the ordinary lives, feelings and persons linked up in a harmonious order under the others meticulous concepts. However, the marriage between Charlotte and Collins is a negative example with the marriage between Lydia and Wickham, which helps to make the plots more tortuous and richer.”[4]

A. Prince and Princess Pattern------ Jane and Bingley

Jane has very good characters, just as kind as an angel. Among the five sisters, she is considered to be the most beautiful one, even arrogant Darcy says that she is the most beautiful girl in the dancing party. She is flattered toward the twice invited by Bingley, while if it were for Elizabeth, she would not think so. Elizabeth describes her sister as:

“Oh! you are a great deal too apt, you know, to like people in general. You never see a fault in anybody. All the world are good and agreeable in your eyes. I never heard you speak ill

of a human being in your life.”[5]

Jane is always with a very indifferent smile, and hides her love towards Bingley successfully, so that in the letter Darcy wrote to Elizabeth, Darcy explains that he cannot see Jane’s love towards Bingley, which leads to the departure of Bingley and almost ruins his own happiness. When other sisters says ill words about Darcy because of Wickham’s narration, only Jane thinks things are strange. Due to her soft temper and just character, she always persuades others to observe things carefully. She treats equally to all the people, and has no perceive of Miss Bingley’s intention, nor the reason for her apathy. It is easy for readers to see the naive character of Jane, and the people around her also have a good impression on her. She is not as assertive as Elizabeth, nor taking the initiative to pursue her own happiness. Fortunately, Bingley really loves her, and asks her to marry him. She finally achieves her ideal marriage.

Mr. Bingley is a handsome and agreeable gentleman, and not contrived. He is gentle and frank, but is a bit of assertive, depending on his friend very much, which is easy to be controlled by others. He is not sure exactly how much he loves Jane, then left Jane confusedly. Although he is well-born, he does not look down upon the people than people under him. Taking Elizabeth visiting Jane for example, when his sister laughs at Elizabeth embarrassment, he says she is very cute. Miss Bingley also says that Elizabeth has some very low-level relatives; he believes that these relatives of Elizabeth can not explain anything. Both Bingley and Jane have good characters, but they do not have their own views, so they take a lot of detours in front of the marriage. Fortunately, they come together at last.

Analyzing their characters, Jane stands for the small women who extremely longing for love and have no other desires for man. While Mr. Bingley is handsome, warm and friendly, also has quite good family background. Every girl is yearning to find such a man. Actually, Jane has a good impression on him from the moment she saw him. It happens that Mr. Bingley has preference for beautiful Jane. In Jane’s sick days, Mr Bingley takes care of her meticulously. When Jane gets better and put forward home, Mr Bingley repeatedly detains and presses her to stay. Their feelings develop calmly and slowly, until when Mr. Bingley leaves Mud Ze Villa, and Jane knows that he will not come back any more. Jane begins to lose heart and holds out little hope for this relationship. When things happen, Jane does not look for reasons nor find a

way to solve the problem, but simply to accept, doing nothing. Similarly, Mr. Bingley does not have his own ideas, and listens to the words of his friend blindly. He begins to suspect whether Jane really loves him, and also questions Jane's parents and sisters vulgar and offensive performance. Although he is deeply in love with Jane, his feelings are too easy to shake. Later, through the help of Darcy, Bingley is finally proposed to Jane. For them, both being ideal companion candidates. Jane admires Bingley for his gentleman poise and solid wealth, while Bingley admires Jane for her sensible and considerate virtue. This kind of wife will be both a career woman and a house wife after marriage. Both of them are the ideal partners for each other.

Their marriage is based on beauty, virtue and fortune. According to Mrs. Bennet, Jane’s marriage to Bingley has the following advantages:

“His being such a charming young man, and so rich, and living but three miles from them, were the first points of self-gratulation; and then it was such a comfort to think how fond the two sisters were of Jane, and to be certain that they must desire the connection as much as she could do. It was, moreover, such a promising thing for her younger daughters, as Jane's marrying so greatly must throw them in the way of other rich men; and lastly, it was so pleasant at her time of life to be able to consign her single daughters to the care of their sister, that she might not be obliged to go into company more than she liked.”[5]

Actually, Jane Austin is the sinking Venus before the dawn of British realism literature is coming. She creates the shapes of Jane and Bingley with the purpose of using realism to deconstruct this kind of love pattern which could only exist in people's imagined world.

B. Flat but Permanent Pattern------ Elizabeth and Darcy

Elizabeth and Darcy are the real protagonists in the novel Pride and Prejudice. The man is extremely missish while the woman is very clever.

Elizabeth is a lovely girl and has a keen sense of observation. She is not as submissive as

Number: 2010051614 Word count: 1061 Style Comparison between Book and Movie on Pride and Prejudice Most people hold the view that a film based on a famous novel should be the same as the original work. However, the film, another form of new literature creating, just as translation, must have some differences from the book. A French writer Marcel states that the film version is not restricted by loyalty to the original story, nor the simple repeat of the content as a literature creating activity (2005, p.22).This thesis aims at comparing the style between the well-known novel pride and prejudice by Jane Austen with the 2005 film adaptation by Joe Wright to discover that the movie adaptation has its own profound meaning and understanding as a new work creation without entire copy of original work. The original work takes on an irony and realistic style. Jane Austen lived her life among the landed gentry. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. The novel Pride and prejudice deals with Mr. Darcy’s pride leads to Elizabeth’s prejudice, and how the prejudice and misunderstanding are removed as they learn more about each other. As we know, Austen’s work s have little narrative or scenic description and contain much more dialogues. Take the marriage of William Collins and charlotte Lucas to analyze the irony style. The reasons why Mr. Collins wants to marry are: first, “a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife” (Austen, 2001, p.3).Second, he thought that it is a right thing to set the example for matrimony in his parish. Third, he gets advice and recommendation from his patroness. This is a humorous and piercing description. Obviously, there is not love in this married couple. Charlotte clear knows that she is at the age of 27, without a good fortune. She clearly knows that she has no other way to improve her social position except to marry a husband with a good fortune. In her eye, marriage has been her object, without considering either man or matrimony. It is clear that they get married for duty, for consideration of life guarantee, not for love. Through the descriptions of Mr. Collins and Charlotte’s marriage, the novel perfectly shows an irony style. Furthermore, we can find the realistic style in the book, because money is an unavoidable topic to the theme of marriage in it. At that time, Britain is at the period of transition from Capitalism to Capitalist Industrialization. Money is getting more and more important in people’s mind about social value. A western literature critic shows that “even David Ricardo had an unlikely clearer understanding about the function of money in daily life as Jane Austen.”(Zhu, 1985, p.178) Women have to rely on marrying a rich man to improve their social status. Mrs. Bennett’s eager to get her daughters married is a good example to support this idea. Her daughters cannot guarantee their life, when Mr. Bonnet passes away. And also in the novel, there are many times mentioned about one’s property, such as “four or five thousand a year”“ten thousand a year”, which implies people will judge others not by quality but by money.
