Forty years ago, about 60 percent of American kids walk to school. In 2009, only 13 percent of students walk to school. Today, the most popular way of going to school is in the family car.

“If children walk one day a week, it is good for health, traffic and the air.” Says Gabe Graff, program manager for Safe Routes to School. The program in

the city of Portland hopes to increase the number of kids walking and biking to school. Gabe Graff visits five schools. He asks parents and students why they drive to school.

Ryan, a middle school student, lives only two miles from school. But he never walks, bikes or takes the bus. Instead, he goes to school in his mother’s car on her way to work. Ryan’s father picks him up in the afternoon. “It’s quick and easy to drive.” says Ryan. Like many students, Ryan gets out the car in front of the gate of the school. “Parents block (堵塞) the streets when dropping off or waiting for their kids. There are safe problems. My Best Way of Going to School

Humans have always dreamed of finding a way to leave traffic jams behind. Well, dream no longer. The flying car and pod car (豆荚车) can help cut down on traffic jams.

The world’s“first flying car”, called the Terrafugia Transition, has made its first flight in the skies of the US. It can fly 640 km through the air without adding more gas, the car maker, TerrafugiaInc, says.

As a light airplane, it is not easy for the Terrafugia Transition to fly in poor weather. However, it has the advantage of being able to continue the journey by road if conditions take a turn for the worse.

This is the first proven flying car with foldable wings. These allow it to perfectly travel from air to road.

However, there are a few problems. The car/plane, which is expected to go on sale as early as 2011,will cost about $194,000 (1.33 million yuan ). Drivers will also need a driver’s and pilot’s license.

For those afraid of heights, or who don’t want to fly, the pod car is a great way to travel.

Imagine using a button to stop the small pod—shape car. The doors open, you climb into the passenger seat, and enter your personal number. Minutes later, the doors slide open and you have reached the place where you’re going.

Cities around the world are looking into pod—car systems, as pod cars do not need human drivers. They are designed for one person or small groups traveling together. Passengers simply type their place into the pod car’s computer and the pod car takes them directly there.

Because pod cars do not make unnecessary stops and use electricity, they save a lot of energy and do not pollute the air. Pod cars also provide passengers with faster service and more privacy than a subway or bus.

While flying cars and pod cars may be a dream available to a few, many humans are still dreaming bigger dreams, such as teleportation (瞬间位移术). It is most widely found in works of science fiction.

Teleportation is a method of transportation,in which, objects or information are dematerialized (使消失), and then recreated in another place. Maybe one day, teleportation could become a reality and people Could avoid traffic jams forever !

1. Which of the following statements about the flying car is true?

A. It can fly in the air but cannot run on the road.

B. It’s the first proven flying car with foldable wings.

C. It will be sold at a very high price in the year of 2011.

D. It’s very light and it can fly in bad weather conditions.

2. What do the flying car and the pod car have in common?

A. Neither of them has been realized yet.

B. They’re as fast as a subway or a bus.

C. Both of them are environmentally friendly.

D. They’re supposed to help avoid traffic jams.

3. What’s the writer’s attitude to the idea of teleportation?

A. He thinks it is a very big joke.

B. He thinks it will happen soon.

C. He thinks it could be a possibility.

D. He thinks it can end the traffic jams.

4. What is the passage mainly about?

中考英语英语阅读理解精选附答案 一、英语阅读理解专项练习试卷 1.阅读理解 Earlier this year, China achieved a new milestone (里程碑) in space research. On January 3, 2019, Chang'e-4 became the first lunar probe (月球探测器) in history to successfully land on the far side of the moon. The Earth's gravity (重力) slows the moon's rotation (自转), matching it to the speed of its orbit (公转). Therefore, the far side of the moon is almost "dark" and has never been seen. It's this sense of the unknown that makes the far side of the moon such an interesting place for scientific and space research. Being blown by solar (太阳的) winds, the far side may have the special minerals (矿物质). For this reason, Chang'e-4 will study the effect of solar winds on the lunar surface and any mineral found by the spacecraft. Chang'e-4 is also carrying flower seeds, potatoes and silkworm eggs to see whether life is possible on the moon. If it is, then the moon will become a possible choice for space travel in the future. However, research of the "dark" side isn't easy. As the far side is blocked(阻断) off from us, radio noise coming off Earth is also blocked. This is why China's relay satellite (中继卫星) Queqiao was sent up in May, 2018. Thanks to Queqiao, the communication problem between Earth and Chang'e-4 has been well solved. Power supply (电源供应) is also a challenge to the task. Chang'e-4 gets energy from the sun through its solar panels. As we know, a lunar day has the length (长度) of 28 Earth days. After Chang'e-4 was sent up on December 8, 2018, it took the probe over 20 days to orbit the moon to be in a position to be able to land in moon daylight and use its solar panels. Luckily, everything goes well, Chang'e-4 has worked on the "dark" side for over 5 months. It has sent back many photos of the far side of the moon and has been used to carry out some scientific experiments. The New York Times used the word "groundbreaking" to praise the task and wrote that "it will offer help to the history and development of the moon". (1)When was Chang'e-4 sent up? A. In May, 2018. B. On December 8, 2018. C. On January 3, 2019.

初中英语阅读理解练习题 A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子)or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people’s rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way. Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有经验的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning. 1. A friend of the writer’s drew the horses ____. A. very well B. in the way of western rule C. in the way of his own rule D. all of the above 2. The writer was surprised because ____. A. the artist began to draw at the head of the horse B. the artist began to draw at the tail of the horse C. the artist made his own rule D. the artist did not follow other people’s rule 3. For the next two years young Bentley spent many winter days in a cold room watching these ice crystals (晶体) under his microscope. The boy thought they were so beautiful that he started to draw pictures of them. But there were so many snowflakes that he couldn’t draw them all. How could he keep their beauty forever? Bentley thought of buying a camera. The boy and his mother asked his father to buy one. But, his father didn’t agree. He thought the whole thing was a bad idea. He thought the only thing a farmer should do was farming. But finally Bentley did get a camera. For more than a year he tried to take pictures of snowflakes. On January 15, 1885, during a snowstorm, Bentley took the first ever photo of an ice crystal with his camera. “It was the greatest moment of my life,” Bentley said later. For 13 years, Bentley worked quietly and took thousands of photos of ice crystals. Later he became known as “Snowflake” Bentley.
