Sometimes life makes more sense when you look at it in reverse(相反).That has certainly been true for me.

Last Christmas,at the age of 39,I caught a disease which attacked my knees and eyes.At its worst I could hardly walk or see.For months I'd have to crawl(爬)across the floor to use the

bathroom or get a drink of water when my husband wasn't home. For a while I could only see shapes and colors so I couldn't drive.

My parents kept begging me to let them come out to stay with me in Los Angeles, but our apartment was small and I knew there was nothing they could really do to help me.For the excellent health insurance my husband had through his job,I was receiving the best medical care possible.

My only problem was that I couldn't drive to my doctor's appointment and I didn't want my husband to keep missing work to drive me.Three days after I explained this to my parents,a check came from them with a note saying this was “taxi money”.Several months later another check showed up from my brother to help make up our income since I wasn't able to work.It probably goes without saying that I was extremely grateful to have family members who could and would support me during the hard time.

In terms of my day-to-day existence,I live in a village within Los Angeles called Brentwood so I was able to walk to the local post office, market, bank, and library. But once there,I had to depend on the kindness of strangers to help me.Los Angeles is a big city, but I lived in a village with a wonderful community(社区)of people who were kind and patient.

Slowly I became well.Life was good again and I thought I had a clear understanding of the blessings(恩惠)this illness has provided.

Erin Kloos,26,was working in Haiti as a volunteer, caring for orphaned children at Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos(NPH)International's facility near Port-au-Prince.

“The kids are all my friends. They're so much fun,”Erin said.“And they always have different ideas on everything.”

Erin had just come out of the shower when the earthquake hit,and in what seemed like an

instant, the six-story building she was living in completely collapsed.

“I got thrown this way, onto my back.Basically all those walls in front of me were on top of me,and I was buried,” Kloos said.

She couldn't see anything or anyone. But she heard a voice from the pile beneath her.It was her good friend and fellow volunteer,Molly Hightower.

“We're saying,‘I'm here.It's okay.I love you.Just scream when you hear someone,OK?OK,just checking in,’”Kloos said.

It took 12 hours and a team of 30 people to dig Erin from the rubble. But as they were rescuing her,she was worrying about the fate of her friend.

“I could hear her screaming. And I think that meant that the ground below her was getting loose, was suffocating(使窒息)her, because that was happening to me,too,” Kloos said.“That was the last time I heard her.”

All things considered,Erin was lucky. She suffered injuries to her arms. But amazingly, she had no broken bones.

“She's here and she's going to make a full recovery because she got out quickly and people took care of her,” said John Kloos,Erin's father.

And yet,not all the Kloos family's prayers were answered.Their 24-year-old son Ryan, who was in Haiti visiting Erin, died in that very same building.

“It must be so hard to deal with the joy of seeing Erin and just the sadness of losing your son,” a doctor said.

“It is,but being here has made me focus on Erin, which has finally helped,” said Cathy Kloos,Erin's mother.

“The thing is that the kid was there doing what he wanted to be doing. He was living life.He was making friends. He was working alongside her,” John Kloos said.“It's an accident. It's like the tsunami. It's like a hurricane. It just happens.”

40.According to the second paragraph,NPH's kids ______.

Saving money is a basic concept of personal financial planning, and it is a key to financial success.Yet many of us don't have a formal savings plan.Without such a plan, the chances of ever saving enough money to meet long-term financial goals are very slim.

In order to save money, you need to have “extra”cash, right? This is a common misunderstanding.Having a spending plan(or “budget”)will help you create money for savings. Most of us,by setting spending goals, can manage to save regularly.

First, set a few short-term and long-term financial goals to work towards, like a down payment on a car or a house.Include the dollar amount and a time frame for achieving the goal. It's much more encouraging to save when you know what you're saving for.And remember,a goal that isn't written down is only a dream.

Set up a separate savings account.Having your savings in a separate account is a reminder that the money is for your future, and watching the balance grow is not only rewarding but also encouraging. If you haven't written a budget, begin now.Whether you make thousands of dollars or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, you need a budget. If you are forced to dip into (动用)your savings for an emergency, remember to pay it back in a reasonable period of time, and set up a repayment schedule.

I have recently come across an interesting experience:I have met a relative who is eighty years old but seems to be in his late 60's.What is the cause of his looking so good? The answer is very simple:all his life he has been practicing all types of sports and even at an older age he feels active and energetic.

He advised me that, for a person to feel healthy,it is important to have active occupations (业余活动).One needn't always do daily sports or have active occupations but at least three times a week he should go jogging for half an hour at least or go to a gym.

However, this physical activity should match with proper food which needs to be made up of fresh food:fresh vegetables and fruit, many liquids a day,and less fats. Then, one should respect a certain timetable of eating and try to follow it each day.In the evening,it is better to have a light dinner and drink some tea or eat fruit.

I should say that many people nowadays have started to practice all kinds of sports. For example, men generally prefer to practice football once or twice a week. They do it for pleasure,to make some physical activity or,moreover,it is a great opportunity to meet with friends. Then, women prefer to choose going to fitness or aerobics(健美操)even if they have to loose some two hours of their spare time. But they have realized how important it is to feel relaxed afterwards and have a nice and firm skin.

Active occupations prevent us from being lazy. For example, walking for half an hour a day has lots of benefits:it puts into function all our muscles and this is good for our immune system

Even if many people feel they don't need to practice a sport or have some active occupations, they have to learn that in time their body will need them a lot. That is why it is better to do this
