A

Four Wild Animal Species Were Endangered

Maybe you can still see them at the zoo. But that doesn’t mean they’re doing alright in the wild.

Tigers

All six tiger species are endangered, with Sumatran tigers and South Chin tigers at a seriously endangered status. The main reasons for their population decline are illegal hunting and destroyed habitats(栖息地), as humans clear forests to gather timber(木材)and build roadways. Only about 3890 tigers presently live in the wild.

Ground squirrels

That’s right, even squirrels are endangered, specifically the San Joaquin ground squirrel. Native to California, USA, these guys have been disappearing since 1979 on account of the construction and human development going through their habitat. Their total population is unknown, but it could be anywhere between 124000 and 413000.

Giraffes

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature recently put giraffes at a vulnerable(脆弱的) status, the level just before endangered. The giraffe population has declined 40 percent in the last 30 years, primarily due to loss of habitat and illegal hunting. Some giraffes are killed just for their tails, which are considered status symbols in Africa.

Asian elephants

The main threat to Asian elephants, one of the most intelligent animals, is their shrinking habitat. As the human population grows, people invade their land to build roads and railway tracks. Elephants in Myanmar are at an especially high risk for being captured and traded or used illegally in the tourist industry. Fewer than 50000 are left on the entire continent.

21. What is the total population of tigers living in the wild?

A. Around 3890.

B. 50000.

C. 124000.

D. 413000.

22.Which of the following is considered one of the most intelligent animals?

C. Ground squirrels.

D. Asian elephants.

23.What is the common threat to the four wild animals?

Day in and day out. Rose, a neat, well-dressed, dark-haired young woman carries out her work at an office in a business park near Cambridge and spends hours studying pictures of children being abused. She watches the images again and again, looking for the tiniest details that might deliver a young victim from hell. They might be as small as the titles of books on a table, the action of making the bed or the images on the posters on the wall—anything that might provide a clue to the place where the child is suffering, and might finally lead the police to the abuser.

How can Rose decide to do such work? And all that for a salary of less than $23,000 a year? She said her motivation in joining the work was to protect the public." When I first started this job, there was anger at the beginning. But when you see what the children have to endure, you know someone has to be there to protect them. If I can play a small part, I will help make a difference."

The 33-year-old woman is enthusiastic about her job. Rose and her team have done what they could to put the children's life back together. They are very proud of what they have done.

The nature of her work has changed her for the better. "I'm a lot more focused on the positive, much more relaxed about the world. I enjoy the good people around me," she says. Rose thinks that her job is a bit like giving blood. Maybe you don't like doing it, but someone has to. She regards it as her duty to help abused children.

24. What is Rose's job?

A. Managing a big business park.

B. Finding clues that help save abused children.

C. Teaching and looking after abused children.

D. Studying images on the posters on the walls.

The world’s first “Sky Pool” has been uncoated, and it’ll give anyone a touch of dizziness, unless he or she is not bothered by heights.

Situated in the capital’s new riverside di strict beside Battersea Power Station, the glass pool, hanging 10 storeys, or 110 feet up as a bridge between two apartment buildings, is 25m long, 5m wide and 3m deep with a water depth of 1. 2m. Swimmers will be able to look down 35 metres to the street below as they take a dip, with only 20cm of glass between them and the outside world. It’s even got a bar, folding chairs and an orange garden.

The pool will be part of Embassy Gardens at Nine Elms, a huge billion building project beside the new American Embassy in south-west London. The project is creating thousands of apartments, the smallest of which are expected to cost nearly $ 1 million, and the pool will only be open to the apartments’ owners.

Embassy Gardens takes design inspiration from the Meatpacking District of New York with floor to ceiling windows and brick frontages. The designer, Sean Mulryan, desired to push the boundaries in the capability of construction and engineering and do something that had never been done before. The Sky Pool’s trans parent structure is the result of significant advancements in technologies over the last decade.

The experience of the pool will be truly unique and it will feel like floating through the air in Central London.

Those people lucky enough to swim there will have a faultless view of the Palace of Westminster and the London Eye. It will be a selling point for developers when the second stage of the development is released to market.

28. Who can swim in the Sky Pool?

A. Anyone at Nine Elms.

B. Visitors to London.

C. People living in Embassy Gardens.

D. Those who are not terrified of heights.

C. Appreciating the views below.

D. Experiencing diving and surfing.

30. What do we know about the pool from the text?

A. It lies in the centre of London.

B. It is 25 metres above the ground.

C. It was similar to New York’s modern constructions.

D. It is helpful for selling apartments in Embassy Gardens.

31.We can infer from the text that .

A. the apartments of Embassy Garden are fairly expensive

B. the new American Embassy has been moved away

C. Nine Elms is a street in Embassy Gardens

D. building the pool is not a complex job

D

As free as they make us, mobile phones still need to stay close to a power source. Soon that may change with "green" power.

Three Chilean students got the idea for a plant-powered device(装置) to charge their cellphones, while sitting in their school's outdoor courtyard during a break from exams, with dead mobile phones.

Then, one of them had an "aha" moment.

“It occurred to Camila to say about plants, "said inventor Evelyn Aravena. “‘Why don't you have

a socket, if there are so many plants? ’After that, we thought, ‘why don't they have a charging outlet?

Because there are so many plants and living things that have the potential to produce energy, why not?’”

Their invention—a small biological circuit called E-Kaia—uses the energy plants to produce during photosynthesis(光合作用). A plant uses only a small part of that energy and the rest goes into the soil, and that's where the E-Kaia collects it. The device plugs into the ground and then into your phone.

"It's the most amazing project I've ever seen in my life, plain and simple. They brought this original model, and it worked — and that's when it all changed, at least from my personal point of view and I began to support them." said Mauricio Cifuentes.

The device solved two problems for the engineering students — they needed an idea for a class project, and an outlet to plug in their phones.

"Looking for a place to charge the notebook, which had no power, and the mobile phones, we weren't able to find anything because all the other students were in the same state of madness trying to find a place to charge their devices," said Aravena.

But plants are everywhere, and the bio-circuit makes the best of their excess(过多的) power.

The E-Kaia doesn't carry much charge but it's powerful enough to completely recharge a mobile phone in less than two hours.

The student inventors have applied for patents on their technology, and expect the E-Kaia to go on sale in December 2016.

32. How could the students get the "green" power idea?

A. By carrying out an experiment.

B. Just from an occasional thought.

C. With the support of their professors.

D. Inspired by the information in a science book.

33. The device collects power by using _____________.

A. photosynthesis

B. a small biological circuit

C. energy plants

D. the electricity stored in the device

34. What can we learn from what Mauricio Cifuentes said?

A. He intended to buy the patent.

B. He invented the original device.

C. He showed great interest in the device.

D. He attempted to produce the device in large numbers.

35.What might be the best title for the passage?

A. A New Device to Change the World

B. Green Power - A New and Potential Source

4

C. Chilean Students Find A Green Way to Charge Phones

D. A New Device Invented by Chilean Students Will Be on Sale

Accept criticism. When you play sports, you will unavoidably receive criticism, whether from a coach or other players 39 Are they angry because you missed a pass, or do they sincerely want to help you improve? In a lot of cases, you can use criticism as motivation to get better.

40 A skill become mastered when you’re able to do it without thinking. Given enough time and practice, a skill will eventually fall under this category. When in a game, you won't have time to think everything through, so practice until it's all automatic.

She was helping him compose (作曲) his first piece of music. Sergei was only five years old. He had overheard his parents discussing a terrible famine (饥荒) in India. The picture Sergei had of those hungry people in his mind caused him to write a story, in the form of musical notes. Sergei could not read music, so he picked out a tune on the piano keys, and his mother recorded the notes. Sergei titled it “Indian Gallop.” Sergei's mother began giving him piano lessons for 20 minutes a day, and his ability grew quickly. She had a great love for music, too, and Sergei often lay awake in bed at night and listened to her play the piano. Sergei's parents found a famous music teacher for him. The teacher shouted at Sergei when he didn't practice reading and playing music. Sergei later wrote, “I wanted to compose great musical plays, and instead I was given all sorts of boring tasks.” Yet he persisted with his studies and grew up to be a great composer. In 1936 a children's theater asked Sergei to write music that would teach children about different instruments. He was happy and wrote the piece in a week, calling it Peter and the Wolf. Sergei's Peter and the Wolf was enjoyed by children as well as adults. The first time Sergei played the piece on the piano, the children listening to it loved it so much that they made him play the ending three extra times. He was excited. Today Sergei Prokofiev is remembered not only for his contributions (贡献) to classical music, but also for his sense of fun. 21. When he was five, Sergei _____. A. could read music

A Insects (昆虫) are a very healthy food. They have almost as much protein (蛋白质) as meat from a pig or cow and are low in fat. Eating insects is also very good for the environment since they need less land and water than larger animals. Marcel Dicke, who studies insects, explained in a talk how insects also produce more meat from the food they eat. For example, imagine a farmer feeds a cow 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce about 1 pound of meat for people to eat. However, imagine the farmer gives a certain number of insects 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce 9 pounds of meat for people to eat! Eating more insects can also help people in poor areas. Many people can raise and sell insects, which can provide jobs and food. But insects will not replace (替代) animal meat very quickly. First, people in some countries would have to change how they think about eating insects. Many people in North America and Europe eat a lot of meat like beef and pork. But they do not traditionally eat insects. In fact, for many people in the west, eating insects sounds crazy! They believe insects are dirty and dangerous. Insects make them feel uncomfortable. Some people are trying to deal with this problem. For example, David George Gordon wrote a book named “The Eat-A-B ug Cookbook”, which tries to show people that insects can be delicious. Other insect experts travel around telling people about the benefits (好处) of eating insects. But they still have a lot of work to do. 21. Eating insects _____. A. is not healthy B. makes people put on fat
