Fun is hardto have.

Fun is a rarejewel.

Somewherealong the line people got the modern idea that fun was there for the asking, that people deserved fun, that if we didn’t have a little fun every day, wewould turn into puritans(清教徒).

“Was it fun?”became the question that overshadowed all other questions. When the pleasure gotto be the main thing, the fun fetish (迷恋) was sure to follow. Everything was supposedto be fun. If it wasn’t fun, then we were going to make it fun, or else.

Think of allthe things that got the reputation of being fun. Family outings were supposedto be fun. Education was supposed to be fun. Work was supposed to be fun. WaltDisney, church and staying fit were supposed to be fun.

Fun got to besuch a big thing that everybody started to look for more and more thrillingways to supply it. One way was to step up the level of danger so that you couldbe sure that, no matter what, you would manage to have a little fun.

Big occasionswere supposed to be fun, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter. But we endedup going through every Big Event we ever celebrated, waiting for the fun to start. So I should tell you justin case you’re worried about your fun capac ity while you are sitting aroundwaiting for the fun to start, that not much is. I don’tmean to put a damper on things. I just mean we ought to treat fun reverently. It is a mystery. It cannot be caught like a virus. It cannot be trapped like ananimal. When fun comes in on little dancing feet, we probably won’t beexpecting it. In fact, I bet it comes when we’re doing our duty, our job.

I rememberone day, long ago, on which I had an especially good time. Pam Davis and I,aged 12, walked into a store that morning to buy some candy. She got herBit-O-Honey. I got my malted milk balls, chocolate stars. Then we started backto her house. It was a long way to Pam’s house but every time we got weary, Pamwould put her hand over her eyes, scan the horizon like a sailor and say, “Weought to reach home by nightfall,” at which point the two of us would laughuntil we thought we couldn’t stand it another minute. Then after we got calm, she’d say it again. You should have been there. It was the kind of day andfriendship and occasion that made me deeply regretful that I had to grow up.

It is fun.

An eclipse happens when one heavenly body such as amoon or planet passes into the shadow of another heavenly body. There are twotypes of eclipses on Earth: lunar eclipses and solar eclipses.

The moon orbits Earth and, at the same time, Earthorbits the sun. Sometimes Earth moves between the sun and the moon. When thishappens, Earth blocks the light from the sun. This is an eclipse of the moon — alunar eclipse. A lunar eclipse can occur only when the moon is full and can beseen from Earth at night.

There are two types oflunar eclipses: total lunar eclipses and partial lunar eclipses.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and thesun are on exact opposite sides of Earth. The moon is in Earth’s shadow and thesunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, which causes Earth’s atmosphere tofilter or block out most of the blue light. However, a partial lunar eclipsehappens when only a part of the moon enters Earth’s shadow. What people seefrom Earth during a partial lunar eclipse depends on how the sun, Earth andmoon are lined up.

A lunar eclipse usuallylasts for a few hours. At least two partial lunar eclipses happen every year, but total lunar eclipses are rare. It is safe to look directly at a lunareclipse although a pair of binoculars can certainly help the viewer appreciatethe beauty of this phenomenon.

Sometimes when the moonorbits Earth, it moves between the sun and Earth. When this happens, the moonblocks the light of the sun from reaching Earth. This causes an eclipse of thesun, or solar eclipse. During a solar eclipse, the moon casts a shadow ontoEarth.

There are three types of solar eclipses:total solar eclipses, partial solareclipses and annular eclipses (日环食). During a solar eclipse, the moon casts two shadows on Earth.Solar eclipses happen once every 18 months. Unlike lunar eclipses, solareclipses only last for a few minutes.

Scientists use solareclipses as an opportunity to study the sun’s corona (日冕). The corona is the sun’s toplayer. During an annular eclipse, NASA (the U.S. space agency) uses ground andspace instruments to view the corona when the moon blocks the sun’s glare. The sudden blocking ofthe sun during an eclipse reduces the light and changes the temperature on theground. This creates conditions that can affect local weather and animalbehavior.

It’s important to neverlook directly at the sun — it can permanently damage your eyes! Solar radiationthat occurs during an eclipse of the Sun can cause a form of burns of one’seyes known as eclipse blindness. In fact, the only way to safely view a solareclipse is by using specially-designed equipment.

61. What canwe know about “a lunar eclipse”?

A. It may create conditions that can affectlocal weather and animal behavior.

B. It can be seen whenthe moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth.

C. It usually happensonce every 18 months and only lasts for a few minutes each time.

D. Ithappens when the moon blocks the light from the sun, which causes the moon to shine.

62. Which of the foll owing can replace theunderlined word “glare”?

A. heat

B.shadow

C. shine

D. radiation

63. It canbe inferred from the passage that ________.

A. people will experience a temperature drop when lunar eclipses happen

B. eclipsesare the result of the shadow cast by the moon onto Earth

C. total lunar eclipses are more difficult to observe than other types oflunar eclipses

D. there can be eclipses even if the three heavenly bodies are notexactly lined up

64.Why is it safer to watch a lunar eclipse than a solar eclipse?

A. Because moonlight is not as strong assunlight.

B. Because a lunar eclipse lasts longer thana solar eclipse.

C. Because special equipment can be employedto view a lunar eclipse.

D. Because a lunar eclipse has much moresteady light than solar eclipse.

The eyeliner makes the dark circles lesspronounced. The lipstick hides the trembling. The ponytail (马尾辫) masks missing patches of hair. I might looka bit thinner, but everyone will ask about my new diet. One hour of preparationand I look like myself. One hour out of 24. Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth it– wasting a twenty-fourth of my day on a lie.

Checking my makeup one last time, I slip on acute pair of flats – heels are too dangerous with shaky legs – and grab myHollister bag. Walking downstairs, I breathe in the sweet smell of waffles and juice.

“Morning, Mom,” I call.

“Morning, baby,” she sings. “Did you sleepwell?”

“Better than I have been.”

She sighs, and her eyes look a hundred yearsold for a minute. “Any improvement is good,” she says half-heartedly.

“Of course.”

“I made waffles.”

“Thanks, Mom. Smells delicious.”

I sit at the table and she hands me a plate. The thought of all that food turns my stomach, but I force a smile and thank mymother again. She busies herself at the sink and fills the silence withchatter. When she turns around, she takes in the waffles still on my plate, only missing a few bites. I smile apologetically.

“I’m not very hungry this morning.”

“You’ll need your strength for thisafternoon. Morrison will wait for you.” She bites her lip.

“I packed your lunch.”

“I’m 18, Mom. I can pack my own lunch. Youhave more important things to do.”

She reaches for the paper bag. “But now Iknow you’ll have something to eat. And you need to eat, okay? You have to keepyour strength up.”

Sighing, I take the bag. I know this peanutbutter and jelly sandwich won’t be eaten, not any more than the one yesterdayor the day before. And even if I do eat it, I’ll just throw it up later.

“Honey, have you thought about what I saidthe other day?” she asks.

I remain silent.

“Sweetheart, you can’t hide the secretforever. Eventually you’re going to miss school and people will start askingquestions.”

“Mom, I have two months left of high school.I can make it till then. I’m class president. I was voted ‘Most popular’, ‘Bestsmile’ and ‘Most likely to succeed’. I’m the girl who’s got it all together. Peopledon’t want to know that the girl who’s got it all together doesn’t have it alltogether. People don’t want to know that girl is to be parted!”

“Honey, don’t say that. You’re not ….”

“Yes, I am. You heard Dr. Morrison. I havemaybe a year left. But that means I can gradua te and then never see thosepeople again. I’ll depart and they’ll feel sorry for me, but at least I won’thave to tolerate their pity.”

“But …” she tries to interrupt.

“Mom, listen to me. I don’t want to be thegirl everyone looks at and whispers, ‘Look at he r. Poor thing. She has cancer.’I can’t handle that. I want to be normal. Just for these last two months.”

“Okay,” she whispers. “Okay. Just remember,it’s okay if you don’t have it all together. Sometimes things just fall apart andthere’s nothing we can do.”

“Thanks, Mom.” I grab my bag and lunch andkiss her on the cheek. “①”

“②” she replies. This exchange, once taken forgranted, is now a vital part of every morning, every afternoon, and everynight. Three little words, followed by four more, have come to mean more thanan entire conversation. They bridge all gaps and disagreements, because we bothknow there is now a restricted number left.

Keys in hand, I open the door and blink (眨眼)in the early morning sun. Perfect.

Sorry seems to be the hardest word. Sosang Elton John on one of his biggest 1970s hits — but not every public figure seems to find it so tough to let outthat powerful five-letter word.

In recent months varieties of publicfigures, from politicians, to Hollywood actors and YouTube stars have allpublicly expressed regrets.

But with floods of regrets on theairwaves, just how can we tell a forced apology from a heartfelt expression?

In its purest form, saying sorry should bean “act of regr ets, a realization that something you have said or done has hurtsomeone and you want to repair it”, says psychologist Geraldine Joaquim.

Made early, a sincere apology can behugely beneficial and can “relieve the tension and takes the wind out of anaccuser’s sails”, she says.

A need to say sorry can arise in someone’spublic life and equally at home with their family and friends but, whatever theenvironment, how well it is received depends on how personalized it feels.

From businesses, governments andorganizations, a scripted response will fail to resonate (引起共鸣) as itwill not convey empathy (同理心) and sympathy.

Whether online or in person, the timingand choice of language in an apology are decisive factors.

“It is important to show that youunderstand and sympathize,” says Martin Stone, of PR agency Tank, “It is vitalthat any business or individual making an apology understands the focus — is it sorry for the way it’s actedor is it sorry that the complainant feels the way they do?”

Performed apologies always have a sense of being “acted out”, andare often accom panied by too many theatrical gestures. If sincere, the personmaking the apology will be looking for listening clues to see if they are beingunderstood, such as eye contact and facial expressions. They will

provide“humbling (谦卑的) signals”, such as a lowered head, to indicate regrets.

It isalso important to avoid irresponsible statements or promises that can’t bekept. “Don’t say that you’ll ensure that this will not happen again if you’renot confident it won’t. It could com e back to bite you,” Stone explains.

Equally, the use of “but” can hugely change the tone of an apology.

As Stone points out. “I’m sorry but.... It sounds like you aremaking excuses and aren’t actually taking any form of responsibility. It may bethree letters but it can instantly make an apology seem
