Noise pollution in cities is causing ourhealth to suffer: one in five

Europeans is regularly exposed to sound levels atnight that could significantly damage their health, leading to diseases, sleepdifficulties and stress. Researchers in Belgium have developed an app called NoiseTubethat allows everyone to transform their smartphone into a sound level meter .

NoiseTube works by recordingsound levels and GPS locations. Once launched the app shows decibel levels of green or red depending on the level of noise. That information isthen sent to the NoiseTube server via the Internet where a “noisemap” is produced and then made available to the user.

The project started in 2008 asa new form of data gathering, one that was close to people and of a socialconce rn. “Sound was an obvious choice because everyone has a microphone ontheir mobile phone, and noise pollution, along with air pollution is anenvironmental concern. Often the two go hand in hand,” D’Hondt of theNoiseTube project said.

Since its launch, the app hasbeen popular with community groups who want to monitor their own noise levels. They don’t think that city produced noise maps give an enough explanation ofthe level of noise they are experiencing. City produced noise maps are based onstatistical models involving very few actual measurements. NoiseTube on theother hand gives a detailed account of the level of noise experienced at aspecific time and location. “Ten people walking the same area from 9am to10am every day for one week can make a valid and detailed map for anarea of a couple of blocks,” D’Hondt said.

I was born and raised in England in aculture where privacy and “keeping yourself to yourself” were valuedtraditions. Speaking to strangers was n ot encouraged. People were mosthospitable and friendly.

However, I have been luckyenough to spend some time in both Italy and the US, where I found traditions ofhospitality and politeness to be very

different.

I experienced Italianhospitality firsthand. On a crowded railway carriage travelling, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence, sinking gratefully into an empty seat, I was scolded inrapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seat ---- it had not been”spare” after all. I apologized in Englis h, and got up to allow himback into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the Englishlanguage, but he, too, realized my genuine mistake. He smiled andgestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in thecorridor for the remainder of the journey. The other occupants of the carriagesmiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome amongst them. I feelthat if this had been in England, a foreigner who made a mistake would notalways be so kindly treated.

Transport also featured in thedifferences I noticed between English and American culture. I flew to New Yorkon a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence.Nobody spoke to me nor, as I expected, to anyone else they did not know. Theyfelt it was not polite to interrupt someone else’s privacy. However, when Itravelled across the United States, whether by plane or bus, I was never shortof conversation. Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat nextto me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself. They obviouslyfelt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they werestrangers or not.

(1)What do we know about the occupants when the author was travelling in Italy?

A . They were all on the side of the gentleman.

B . They all laughed at the author for his mistake.

C . They would not bear a mistake like the author’s in public

D . They all showed their understanding of the author’s mistake.

(2)How does the author finally believe the Italian people are?

A . Cold.

B . Rude

C . Helpful.

D . Hospitable.

(3)Why did English passengers sit in near silence according to the last paragraph?

A . They were too tired to speak to anyone.

B . They were all strangers to each other.

C . Privacy was a valued tradition in England.

D . Everybody was deeply lost in though.

(4)What can be the best title for the text?

A . Different Ways of Hospitality and Politeness

B . Co-understanding Each Other

C . My Unforgettable Travelling Experience Abroad

D . The Importance of Privacy
