第二部分阅读理解(共两节, 满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

I am Henry Jekyll. I was born in the 1800s. I inherited(继承) a large fortune, a healthy body and an excellent mind. I was naturally hard-working and soon I was very successful in my job. So the outside world saw a serious, hard-working, successful doctor. Behind this quiet character, however, was a wild, fun-loving, irresponsible young man. Both of them were me. They lived together in the same body.

―Was it possible,‖ I wondered, ―to find a drug that could give each side of my character its own separate face and body?‖

After much thought and careful study I believed I had found the answer. I had read many scientific books and spent many hours in my laboratory, searching for the right mixture of chemicals to make my drug. At last I got everything ready.

Late one night, I mixed everything together and prepared my drug. I watched the smoke rising from the liquid as its color changed from red to purple and at last to green. Then, bravely, I drank every bitter drop.

I felt a violent sickness in my stomach and a terrible pain in all my bones. The room seemed to turn round and round and I trembled with fear. Then the fear and pain disappeared and a strange, sweet feeling took its place. Wild thoughts danced through my mind—the wild passions of an evil and cruel stranger. But inside myself I felt younger, lighter, more carefree than ever before. ―If this is pure evil,‖ I thought, ―I like it.‖

I stood there, enjoying these strange new thoughts and passions and suddenly realized that I was shorter. So I decided to go to my bedroom in my new body and take a look at myself in the mirror there. As I came into my room, I saw Edward Hyde for the first time.

At that time, the good side of my character was stronger than the evil side. Henry Jekyll had his faults, but he was mostly a good, kind man. I believe that is the reason why Edward Hyde was so much smaller than Henry Jekyll. But that was not the only difference between the two men. Henry Jekyll had a kind, open, honest face. But pure evil stared out of Edward Hyde’s eyes. I felt no dislike, however. Indeed, I welcomed him. Edward Hyde was me, young and strong and full of

life.

21. In others’ eyes, the writer was ______.

Four years ago, we asked ourselves: what if we

could create a shopping experience with no waiting in

lines and no checkout? Or could we create a physical

store where customers could simply take what they want and go? Our answer to those questions is Amazon Go, where you could experience the idea of ―just walk out shopping‖.

Amazon Go is a new kind of store with no checkout required. We created the world’s most advanced shopping technology, so y ou never have to wait in line. With our ―just walk out shopping‖ experience, simply use the Amazon Go app to enter the store, take the products you want, and go! No lines, no checkout.

Our checkout-free shopping experience is made possible by the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning. Our ―just walk out technology‖ automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in your virtual cart. When you’re done shopping, you can just leave the store. Shortly after, we’ll charge your Amazon account and send you a receipt.

We offer delicious ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options made fresh every day by our on-site chefs and favorite local kitchens and bakeries. Our selection of foodstuff ranges

from bread and milk to cheeses and locally made chocolates. You’ll find well-known brands we love, plus special finds we’re excited to introduce to customers. For a quick home-cooked dinner, pick up one of our chef-designed Amazon Meal Kits, and you can make a meal for two in about 30 minutes.

Our 1,800-square-foot shopping space is conveniently compact(紧凑的), so busy customers can get in and out fast. It is located at 2131, 7th Ave, Seattle, WA, on the corner of 7th Avenue and Blanchard Street. All you need is an Amazon account, a supported smartphone, and the free Amazon Go app.

Purchasing school uniforms is easy and needs less hesitation and consideration. Today’s workplace is unique in history. Never before have we seen people working together who represent such different backgrounds and experiences. This difference of age, race, gender, and work style makes it very difficult to organize and run a company.

As a result, companies are looking for individuals who can manage a wide range of employees effectively. Increasingly, managers are discovering that age differences among workers are a major cause of concern.

This has been an important realization. The management difficulties and challenges have led some experts to study intergenerational differences for an understanding of problems in the workplace. What they have discovered is interesting and may provide ways of improving working conditions in companies that employ individuals from different generations.

The first thing to realize, they say, is that differences of opinion about the importance of work and how to get work done are not a coincidence. That is, it is not an accident that young employees will be different from older employees. In fact, if employers do not pay attention to these differences, it is possible that anger will build up between people and lead to difficulties in the company.

Resentment (仇恨) between members of different generations, if not attended to, can lead to extreme anger and unhappiness and even lasting enmity if people are not careful. That individuals from different generations should come to view each other as if they were from different sides of warring countries should not be surprising.

It is natural for individuals from the same generation to form alliances (联盟), to come together for protection. Different generations represent different experiences in life, and these lead natu rally to different opinions about oneself and one’s approaches to work.

If you were raised in a time of plenty, when products were readily available and relatively inexpensive, you would believe that prosperity is natural and expectable. If, on the other hand, you were raised in a time of scarcity, you would always be careful not to waste things for fear you would not have enough. You would make angry people who seem to believe that problems will always solve themselves. Such optimism in the face of difficulties would be a source of unhappiness between you and them. It is difficult, in such circumstances, to achieve a happy, agreeable atmosphere in the workplace.

32. According to the experts, employers should realize ______ if they want to avoid anger

between employees.

A. the different understanding of problems in the workplace

B. the different views on value of work and working methods

C. the different genders of employees in the workplace

D. the different ways of expressing anger in the company

33. The wo rd ―enmity‖ is closet in meaning to ______.

A. hatred

B. sorrows

C. ignorance

D. forgiveness

34. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Employees in some companies regard each other as mere enemies.

B. Employees’ attitudes towards life are related to the time when they grow up.

C. Employees who are raised in a time of scarcity tend to be angry with others.

D. Achieving a harmonious atmosphere in the workplace is the main task for employers.

35. What does the writer mainly talk about in the passage?

A. Employees should be cooperative and friendly with each other.

B. It is difficult for employers to have workers work in a friendly way.

C. The weakness of human nature causes the anger between employees.

D. The generational differences cause the disharmony among employees.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

A Canine Reading Buddy

Dogs and people have developed a special bond over time. Recently, however, some dogs have taken a different role in people’s lives—therapy dogs.

36 Some therapy dogs visit patients in hospitals or nursing homes, while others visit children in schools and libraries. They are there to help children become better readers.

Reading programs that use therapy dogs have been in existence for more than ten years. All therapy dogs of this program are registered with an organization that tests the dogs to make sure they have the right personality for the job.

37 Both the dogs and the handlers are volunteers with the reading program.

At the start of a reading therapy session, a child and a dog are introduced. The pair is allowed to settle down in a quiet corner together. 38 An adult handler stays nearby but

generally lets the dog perform its job without interfering(干涉). Sometimes, a handler may ask a question that encourages the child to work with the dog to help the child feel more comfortable.

Not every child will be able to be part of a reading therapy program that uses dogs. A few children might be allergic to dogs or afraid of them; some children might have cultural traditions that prevent them from touching a dog. 39

Reading therapy programs inspire learning and change. 40 They spend time with human friends. For dogs that love human companionshiop and a quiet place to rest, being part of a reading therapy program can be a great way to spend a few hours each day. The readers benefit too, gaining confidence and learning that reading aloud can be a relaxing experience.

A. How do the therapy dogs benefit from it?

B. But therapy animals also serve in many other areas.

C. As the child reads, the dog usually lies quietly and listens.

D. When reading to an animal, some children may become relaxed.

E. In these circumstances, other animals are available, such as cats and parrots.

F. A therapy dog is more of a companion and is trained to help people in different ways.

G. A dog’s handler also takes a class and must pass a test to work in the therapy program.

Besides this, I will greatly appreciate it if you could introduce me something about the school life in your university, especially the extra-curriculum activities and tuition.

Thank you so much and I'm looking forward to you reply.

Yours faithfully,

Text 1

M: What about coming to my place for a coffee, Mary?

W: I can’t, John. I’ve got a meeting at ten o’clock, so I have to go to my office now. Another time, maybe.

Text 2

W: The dress I’m tryi ng on is too small. Do you have a larger size?

M: Yes, but not in that color. We have a larger one in red.

W: Red? Red would be lovely.

M: Here you are.

Text 3

M: Linda, could you hold this ladder? I need to get onto the roof.

W: Sure. Why are you doing that?

M: I want to clear the leaves off the roof.

Text 4

M: Are you going to the exhibition in Sydney next week, Ellen?

W: Well, I was planning to, but I haven’t been able to reserve a hotel room.

M: Have you tried the Hillsboro Hotel? They might still have space. And it’s not too far from the exhibition hall.

Text 5

W: Why on earth are we inside on such a beautiful day?

M: Well it was you who wanted to spend the day at a museum.

W: Shall we leave now and take a walk outside in the city square?

Text 6

W: Hi, Don! So nice to see you.

M: Pam! Where have you been for the last three months? I never see you anymore.

W: Oh, I’ve been working strange hours these days. I don’t see much of anyone anymore.

M: Well, I understand. I wish I could stay and talk, but here comes my bus. Why don’t we go out sometime?

W: I’d like that. Call me soon.

M: Sure. Are you still living in the same apartment?

W: On Walker Avenue.

M: Okay. Take care!

W: Yeah, you too. Catch you later!

Text 7

M: I’ll have to make a choice soon about next year. I’ve got a chance to go on a six-month journey to South America, but I’ve just been offered a job in a bookshop here.

W: Wow, South America? How could you say no?

M: Well, believe it or not, I don’t have a burning desire to see the world.I’d much prefer just to stay at home. Anyway, it’s hard to decide.

W: Well, I would strongly advise you to think of the future. Working abroad is much more exciting than working in a small town. You’re lucky to have a choice. A lot of people don’t.

Text 8

W: This is Word Master on Radio 4. Today we have professor Danny Sheffield from Arkansas Community College. Okay Danny, could you tell us how to produce a good piece of writing in college?

M: Well, one of the basic things about any writing is to remember three key points: number one, say what you’re going to say. So you’re telling the reader what you’re going to write about, and maybe also your opinion in the beginning part. The second thing is: say it. And here’s where you provide details and facts to support what you have stated. And the third part is: say it again. Conclude the main parts of your article and re-state the key points that you’ve made,

and what you want your readers to understand.

W: Uh, what really separates an excellent article from the average ones?

M: I would say it’s a personal voice. Because people respond to such an article much more easily.

So if you want to touch the reader’s feelings, your natural voice will help. That puts your writing more into the excellent type, rather than, ―Oh, this is a good formal article.‖

Text 9

W: I can’t believe it’s almost summer.

M: Yeah, I know. The year went really fast.

W: What are you going to do this summer vacation?

M: I’m going to work for a company.

W: A company? What’s that? What do you do?

M: We help at parties. Our company prepares and serves the food. And usually, another company provides the music.

W: I didn’t know you could cook.

M: I don’t have to cook. I’m only an assistant.

W: When do you start?

M: Tomorrow. We’re helping a birt hday party. Then, a big family get-together.

W: So, what exactly do you do?

M: Before the party starts, I help set everything up. You know, bring the food in and arrange the tables. Make sure it looks nice.

W: Sounds pretty easy.

M: That’s only the firs t part. During the party, I have to serve food and drinks to the guests.

W: Well, at least you get to meet people.

M: Yeah. And after the party is finished, I help clean up.

W: Yuck. I hate to wash dishes.

M: Oh, I don’t wash dishes. Someone else does. I just put everything in the trunk.

W: That’s not so bad. Sounds like a cool job.

Text 10

W: Hello, everyone. Welcome back to the program. We all know plants need sunshine to grow.

But actually, not all vegetables need lots of sunshine. Mark Hoffman and his wife own a guesthouse in Kempton, Illinois. They often serve their guests fresh vegetables from their garden. For almost ten years, the Hoffmans have been experimenting with shade plantings.

Curious visitors often ask how they do it. Here is the answer: they grow tomatoes near the trees that produce a lot of shade. Tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours a day of direct sunshine, especially morning sun. This goes against the traditional advice that tomatoes need eight, even twelve hours a day of full sun. In fact, plants and tree roots can share something in common. Besides tomatoes, the Hoffmans grow Irish potatoes. Plants with wider leaves seem to do better in shady environments. The potatoes grow better in the shade than in full sun.
